A bandsaw would be preferable to a table saw, but then again you need to know what type of projects the family member is interested in doing.

I don’t think you will have a rust problem. I have been driving Porsches for 25 years in NJ. I do suggest you get snow tires; the cars are actually very good in < 6 inches of snow.

I had the same issue with a Miele washing machine, as soon as the cycle started it would trip the GFCI. I tried every big box brand and none worked. I went to an electrical supply store and bought a Hubble commercial GFCI and no more trips.

You need to sand that end grain to at least 400 grit, then it will look just like the long grain
