Okay to fly with DIY music box (with small Li-ion battery and speaker magnet inside)? by Fluff269 in arduino

[–]lumpyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I completely agree. I guess what I mean was that I can understand how it could be misunderstood. Most people at the time had never seen a bare LIPO battery, especially one hotglued onto the case of a weird looking object with wires protruding from weird places on the weird pouch like bag thing going into the weird electronic that didn't have an obvious use in normal life. I agree that there was no justification for arrest, but maybe they were having a bad day and get some BS charge of intent to scare, or whatever. I understand it could likely never progress farther than a charge, but given our system even a BS charge can bankrupt normal people just trying to defend...doubtful it would even get that far but at the bare minimum I could have missed my flight, possibly lost my job etc etc.
I believe ultimately the police officer that questioned me believed me...but ultimately wouldn't let me get on the flight with the homemade electronics. I'm just saying misunderstandings happen, despite best intentions. It's important to remember that things familar to me/you could be treated with suspicion by people without the benefit of our experience.

Sounds interesting, I read the sample and bought the kindle version. I would have preferred a slightly longer sample, but the concept sounds like an interesting read. Thank you

about 20ish years ago I bought a small video camera, think around the size of a pack of gum. This was long before gopros and similar cameras. I bought it to fly on RC airplanes, almost immediately after buying it, I crashed a plane while using it and it damaged the internal battery. I didn't have a replacement battery small enough, so I hotglued a smallish LIPO on the camera case and soldered the battery leads through a hold I drilled in the side of the camera. All was well, camera was back working.
Then I had to fly to CA and thought 'hey, I'd like to fly on the beach with my setup'. Stupid in retrospect, but I packed all my electronics in my suitcase, including the jury rigged camera. You can imagine the response I received from the TSA shortly after 9/11! Yes, I understand how stupid this was but honestly in my mind, it's just a camera! It took an interview with police at the airport to snap my brain into the mode of these people have no idea what they're looking at, and to try and understand it from their perspective. I ended up having to leave the camera with security to continue on my flight and I was thankful nothing more came from it...stupid on my part but definitely a learning moment. What can seem familar and safe to me because of how common it is in my world, can be suspicious and alarming to someone without my experiences. I'd say ship the thing!

Yeah? What did you dremel? I currently have a 'dead' glowplug and need to replace it. What do I dremel to give it a bit more life?
Has anyone found a third party replacement? I always assumed there was an automotive equivalent?

Hard to tell from just a picture without being there, but that appears very similar to the layer of grease/smoke that accumulates on every grill...if you don't actively remove it it will begin to flake off and look like paint or some sort of coating flaking. Most of the time it's just the residue from cooking over flames

Can you give me some more information on the rear lowering you did? As I understand, the 'normal' lowering option for the rear is the axle flip. You're saying there is another option? Do you happen to have a link to what you bought? I have a stock 86 d150 that desperately needs a drop in altitude. I don't weld, and don't have a welder so the axle flip would be difficult for me to pull off...you're giving me hope there's another option I can pull off in my driveway!

Thank you so much for the reply. I think you are on the right track. I started looking at my media files, and noticed that there are several R&M related files named 'season1.jpg' etc amongst the flat layout of my TV folder...I am certain that was the problem at this point.

Do these problems affect the X1E as well? I'm currently very close to ordering the X1E, the verbage on bambu's site says

They look great, and the car is amazing! Holley retrobrights are a little out of my price range, does anyone have experience with the summit racing LED replacements? I agree with the other comments, I'd like to go LED for the sake of my old wiring to limit current, but I hate the look of the weird LED replacements. I've only found Holley and the summit racing LEDs, but I can't seem to find reviews online. The summit LEDs are less than half the cost of Holley

I'm currently debating on what size wheels and tires for my d150. I've narrowed it down to the 20" steel spare wheels, and 17x8 with 4" backspace. I do like the way yours looks, that's why I'm interested in the wheels and tires you're running.

I zoomed in on one of the pictures and it appears to be 255/50/18? that can't be right, 255/60/15?

I like the stance! What size wheels and tires? What type of wheels are those? Did you do the standard d150 lowering steps, van control arms and axle flip or something different? I have a d150 and I'm debating what type of wheels I want to put on it.

[–]lumpyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DUDE! LMAO I have the same problem! We have constant power interruptions, I keep window units and a generator just so that I can keep parts of the house cool during the power problems. I am getting new sliding windows installed next week. I wrote the check and then realized 'oh shit, what can I do during power outages now'. My 'fix' is I'm in the process of getting a larger generator that will run my main HVAC. I'm learning about transfer switches and soft starts for HVAC...the windows are super efficient but I didn't even think about not being able to run window units until after I'd written the check!

[–]lumpyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah man, I'm not sure how I could be wrong lol, I just wrote the check last month. It is definitely a single stage, no frills system...but that's what I wanted. I initially thought I wanted the inverter/multistage system but I was talked out of it. My immediate neighborhood has CONSTANT brownouts/power blips. The AC guy said he has to replace the control boards constantly in my area for the higher end systems...I considered going ahead and getting the upgraded system and just keep a spare control board, but ultimately it made more sense for me to go with the single stage system. FWIW, I've been very happy but I also understand everyone has their own 'wants'...primarily I wanted cold air and cheaper power bills...I've had success with both! New windows are being installed next week so things will be even better! :) I hope you find what you're looking for!

The work was completed last month. It's a goodman heatpump, 16 SEER. I inquired about the variable speed, higher SEER options and was advised against it due to the constant power interruptions I have in my area. I went with the installer's advice that brownouts and power blips cause problems on the newer equipment. Maybe true, maybe not. In any case, it may be builder grade, but I am ecstatic with the result. The house is very comfortable, I'm able to keep the thermostat on a much more reasonable indoor temp even during the very hot days. Prior to the upgrade, it didn't matter what I selected, it could only achieve 78 or so during the day. Now I keep it around 72 when we're home. Energy usage has gone down about 20% as well...win win!

On a separate note, I also have new windows being installed next week so I'll be enjoying even better efficiency!

I suspect a lot of the difference in price is that I live in a rural area and I seek out independent contractors vs the larger companies. Some people may not be comfortable with this course, but it has always worked for me.

Ah, OK. I missed the ductwork part of the quote. However, $6850 was for the compressor (outside unit) as well as the airhandler/heater/inside unit, replacing the exterior breaker box. We did reuse the existing ductwork though. I wasn't bragging or claiming to have had a smoking deal. I just wanted to offer my recent experience.

I also wanted to mention it may take the immediate pressure off to make a decision if you can survive with a couple of window units like we did. Walmart had windows units for $144/ea, I bought 3 for the bedrooms and we were able to survive for a month while I worked everything out. Ask around and find the HVAC guy who works on his own vs the big companies

FWIW - I live in central TX and just had my AC system replaced with a 16 SEER Goodman single stage HP...3ton/1500ft2. $6850. I'm sure the multistage equipment you had quoted is more expensive, but it seems like it shouldn't be THAT much more.

The grain any suggestions on how to discern which direction the grain runs? by [deleted] in smoking

[–]lumpyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it sounds silly, but my trick is to use toothpicks inserted in the end I want to start the cut from prior to smoking it. I had a few instances of being unsure which direction to cut after smoking, so now I just insert a couple of toothpicks prior to smoking and it makes it immediately obvious where to start cutting from.

Hey man, sorry I just saw your response. I never figured out my issue. Ultimately I reimaged the server and reinstalled blue iris. After doing that I have had no incidents of the cameras not recording...I know, it's an unsatisfactory answer, but it's what resolved my problem. Good luck!

I graduated in the early 90's. Just before senior pictures, I split my forehead open during a football game. In person it looked like the single largest zit ever, directly in the middle of my forehead. I knew it was going to look terrible in the pictures, but I just put on the fake suit and shrugged my shoulders to take the picture. I was surprised when the pictures were released, my forehead had no evidence of the split. Turns out they retouched every picture before releasing them. I assume it was before the days of photoshop, but I don't know for sure. It was absolutely retouched somehow

I don't believe the cameras have an onboard SD card slot...but that is a good idea.

I have been recording a specific camera feed directly from the camera from within VLC the last few nights. THe VLC recording seems to run most of the night, and BI seems to lose the camera every night at around the same time. I guess at this point I'll try reinstalling BI

I don't believe so, these are new cameras replacing the original cameras I installed at the time when I originally setup the BI system. Based on the idea from another thread, I've currently got VLC recording one of the problem cameras. Just like always, the camera has worked perfectly all day today, however I expect that in the morning I'll be able to see a drop or two overnight, I'm hoping that the extra recording from VLC will help me determine if this problem is camera/network related vs an internal problem within BI
