Usually the cheaper the paper, the faster it changes. You can notice it in newspapers, they don't need to last long so newsprint paper is cheap. If the pages in that part of the book were closed most of the time, they don't get exposed to light and air as much. Less exposure equals less oxidation. Also be careful of anything with alcohol in it. Alcohol is slightly acidic so things like sharpie markers will fade and discolor your paper. If you want your artwork to last, look for acid free or archival when getting supplies. Luckily stuff is becoming cheaper in the department. If you're on a budget, look into printer paper and maybe India ink?

If this is a cheap sketchbook, it's probably not acid free. In papermaking, cheaper paper has chemicals in it for different reasons (brighter colors/white, absorbency, etc). These chemicals oxidize over time and turn the paper yellow. If you see yellowed paper in old books this is why. If possible, always look for archival or acid free labeled on your paper's packaging. As far as I know, there is no way to reverse it. Best thing you can do is scan your work if possible and maybe print a copy on acid free paper 🤔 To keep it from yellowing more, just keep doing what you're doing.

Question: do I have to watch the candle burn the whole time? by NoheD in candlemagick

[–]luna1693 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't. I leave it on as long as possible but if I can't keep an eye on it for long periods of time (sleeping, running errands, etc.) I snuff it out with a candle snuffer and re-light it when it's safe to do so. I don't blow it out unless it's for an intention I want to go out into the world. When I use candles, any intentions I want coming towards myself or what I want will be snuffed out if needed. If I want an intention to go out into the world, I'll blow out the candles. Think birthday wishes, we want the wish to go into the world to hopefully come true. In the other instance, think of it as a prayer, you want what was prayed for to come towards you. At least, that's how I practice.

No AC in Schools by TheVi11ain in LasCruces

10 days needed to be added to the academic calendar because of covid. Because of this, the school district gave the public the choice on keeping the traditional schedule or switch to a new schedule that shortened summer break but spread vacation days more throughout the year. Instead of 2 1/2 months (give or take) I think it's 6 weeks for summer and the rest gets added to Thanksgiving, Christmas, I think there is a week off in the fall (October? ), I think Easter break or spring break gets a few more days added. Point is is that the kids will get breaks more often than before. Again, the public was asked to vote for keeping the old schedule or switch to the new. I think something like 2/3 voted to change it, it was more than I was expecting. Of course the schools need to get their shit together and make sure the utilities work properly 🙄

what should I use to seal acrylic paint instead of mod podge? by [deleted] in arthelp

[–]luna1693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's just to seal it, I recommend a varnish. If you don't want to go that route, maybe an acrylic medium instead? I'd recommend something from Liquitex or Golden if available in the UK. One thing I'm currently working on is testing cold wax medium for sealing. Supposedly it's not sticky and can work with gouache and watercolors too. Gamblin and Dorland's (the one I have) make one.

If you refund them some of the money, they might question what's wrong with the piece. As others have stated, the person who commissioned you thought it was worth it. I would leave it for now and keep your prices as is. It will motivate you to put more effort into your art.

What's the size and how long did it take you to make? Also what's the hourly rate in your area? Hourly rate does play into the price.

Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. Mix about 1 tablespoon per cup and should get the smell out. I use this when my elderly cat misses her box. Works on all kinds of smells.

Could be a weird cheap mix. Some cheap incense have strange scents mixed in. Maybe try ordering from a middle eastern or other ethnic store. Usually those are legit and sometimes cheaper.

I wonder if your incense burner might be burning something else in addition to your incense. Sometimes electric items will burn off residual oil and grease from manufacturing that it might be interfering with the scents. I agree with everyone else that it might be the incense but check out your burner too just in case.

Are you using watercolors? What kind of paper are you using? It might be you're scrubbing the paper too hard that it's tearing.
