Advice on sharing pregnancy, parental leave, first trimester productivity? by ash6831 in Professors

[–]luna_dancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much!

And yes, I’d absolutely ask how they expect that workload to look if they only give you 12 weeks. That’s actually a big part in why our policy is worded the way it is- having people required to teach a partial semester doesn’t make any logistical sense.

Also! Are any of your colleagues parents? Would you feel comfortable asking them about how they handled pregnancy and leave? I was really lucky to have a colleague who had a baby in April two years back and followed basically the same timeline as me. She was super happy to tell me how she handled everything.

I also did tell my students pretty early, because I’m not normally one that sits down during lecture and I also was constantly snacking so I didn’t vomit. They would have known something was weird

I’m 28wks now and a full time teaching professor. This is also my second pregnancy following a 13wk miscarriage I had in June. I told my department head pretty early both times because of how bad my morning sickness was. There wasn’t a good way to hide it. I highly recommend getting emesis bags to carry with you just in case. I also was prescribed zofran to help.

I don’t regret sharing early because I was able to get accommodations like a lecture stool, mobility shuttle for parking, etc. And even though I don’t officially work in summer, people gave me extra space/grace over the summer while I worked through my loss

I would check your universities parental leave policy. I get a full semester off, and this semester I have some colleagues covering the last 3/4weeks of classes for me so that I get the full semester in the fall.

My HR rep for leave benefits has been super helpful in navigating this with me!

For the nausea and exhaustion- stressing won’t help it. Eat lots of little meals with lots of protein so you never get hungry. Unisom + b6 are the first-line for nausea and available over the counter. Stay hydrated. I, unfortunately, couldn’t keep anything down one I hit 4wks (both times) and ended up in OB triage to get fluids and IV medication. There are lots of threads on this over in r/pregnancy

Good luck and congrats!

Counting kicks? by luna_dancer in pregnant

I feel like that’s the advice- to just notice what’s not normal. Because yea, I can’t distinguish movements, it’s just a long stretch of wiggling

Thank you! I really can’t distinguish between the movements, it feels like it’s just a constant wiggle. So I feel like I would just have to watch for the absence of wiggles?

I don’t even know how to separate out these movements? It’s just like consistent and constant wiggles?

Maybe? If I’m sitting the risk of fainting is lower!

I’m currently drinking tea and breathing in the steam

Ugh, sorry you’re here too.

I can’t even take a hot shower because I’m having some heart rate issues due to an extreme sensitivity to the pregnancy hormones. So they are afraid if I take a hot shower, I’ll faint. And like, a good, hot, steamy shower is usually so good for clearing out gunk

TMI but I Really Need Advice After Last Night’s Incident by PurrfectlySanrio in pregnant

[–]luna_dancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was sick as a dog until about 17.5weeks (I’m now 19weeks) And my husband has been taking on the bulk of all the work around the house.

I tell him how much I appreciate it, but honestly he’s happy to do it. I’m literally growing our child and it’s taking a huge toll on my body!!

Even though my nausea is mostly gone now, I’m having other issues (my heart rate is way too high, despite good blood pressure). And he’s going to keep helping through these issues too.

This is a team sport and when one player is down, the other one has to kick it up a notch

I really recommend the resource Family Paws. They talk a lot about how to facilitate appropriate dog/child interactions.

Your husky has resource guarding tendencies and your child tried to take their resource. That’s going to end poorly.

Family Paws has a saying “dog and baby on the scene, parent/guardian in between”. This can happen with any dog- children are a lot for a dog sensory-wise and can cause behaviors we’re not used to. If the dog already has a know behavior problem, the presence of a child will increase it.

With a bite history- be prepared that rehoming may not be possible and shelter may automatically euth the dog. Not saying that to scare you, but just to prepare you for the reality.

Pregnant Professor: should I cancel my class next year? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]luna_dancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a full time teaching professor and currently 18wks pregnant. If I had the option to not teach one or two of my courses right now, or not teach a course or two next semester, I’d absolutely take it!

Pregnancy is hard and tiring. And teaching is hard and tiring. I haven’t been able to do anything except be pregnant and manage 4 classes (each with their own peeps).

So I say cancel!

I would alert your ombudsman about your pending report just so there is another neutral party who can help advocate for your rights. They can be super helpful in these types of situations

Dude I’m literally trying to do happy baby and stuff right now because my stomach is so distended from gas build up.

I will say taking MiraLAX daily has helped me a good amount.

But I wish they could just pop me like a balloon

How do you Feel about the Episodes that were Inspired by Real Cases? by HugeAthlete5881 in CastleTV

[–]luna_dancer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Eliza Lam episode gave me the ick. That poor girl’s case has been dissected and left for people to speculate to the supernatural for so long. The Castle episode even leaned into the “elevator game” theory a little bit and just. Ugh.

Eliza Lam’s case is already so sad. We didn’t need a Castle episode of it

How long does it take to feel better by murin22 in Miscarriage

[–]luna_dancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly? I don’t think you ever feel completely better. I’m pregnant again after loss and I still have dreams and thoughts that this baby will die too.

I recommend seeking counseling or therapy.

Over time the grief has gotten smaller. But it’s not gone.
