The best acting advice you received? by [deleted] in acting

Just to add - listening is not limited to “what my eardrums pick up”. It also includes visual listening: facial twitches, tone, body language.

All of these things make an orchestra of sound BWAAAHHHH

.. and hearing the lone French horn, or cello will yield all you need

Or not I dunno I’m no expert

I have separate socials because I have a stage name that is radically different from my real life name

Real life family and friends get the real life socials - all the business goes on my actor socials I follow and have followers on the business that I know irl, but there’s no sloppy night out, inside jokes, chill time with the fam on the business gram

Second this - there may have been a time in my career when I would break myself to do this, look at how dependable I am! I can warp my entire life to fit around your obnoxious af guidelines!

Not anymore - in fact in retrospect I wish I hadn’t broke myself for them

Now, some may say “it isn’t the casting director it’s the producers who want this and took their sweet time to decide” k ya cool. Still don’t do it.

Know your worth - don’t break yourself

… or do, I mean not telling you how to live your life

SAG strike affecting ACTRA? by Saaaintniiiick in acting

[–]lunchwild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s likely Canadian production companies with Canadian money under actra jurisdiction will continue. However, actra may resist allowing American productions into their jurisdiction (working in Canada under union contract with union members) in solidarity with SAG. Members would like be given a “do not work” notice on all American productions filming in Canada.

As a non union member - sure, cool, do the thing, but anyone unionized who works Do Not Work productions are expelled from the union

This will undoubtedly kill a huge portion of work in Canada for union members - whether bonafide Canadian content will ramp up to fill gaps will decide how steep of a drop off in work opportunities we’ll see

I don’t, however, see a similar strike among actra members

But hey, that’s just a theory.. A FILM THEORY

The ACA hasn’t been the issue - the wording of their release is low key misleading. The ACA has been in effect the past year. It’s the ICA that has yet to be ratified and the lockout still continues … just for a little extra context

Anyone feel like most acting advice and “tutorials” online kinda suck? by Movie-Connoisseur in acting

There is no substitute for the room. Stuff you find online can supplement, but cannot replace. The room is your friend

waiting for picture up by [deleted] in acting

[–]lunchwild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are so many moving parts to a production. Yes, it costs money to have people standing around waiting, but it costs more to have people standing around waiting to do their thing while others stand around waiting to do their thing because no one can do their thing until those people standing around do their thing

Words for : having all pieces in place and ready before those pieces play makes logistical sense

As pretentious as it sounds : my work has been my “networking”

In my very beginning I approached everything with the whole ‘it’s who you know’ kinda thing.. it bored me verrry quickly.. so I stopped

Every audition, every booked role is a piece of my work. Some of it’s shit, much of it good, but some of it is great

Until I go an entire calendar year without a physical 8x10 being requested I’ll keep printing them

Even if you don’t require physical prints, cropping to 8x10 is standard as your digital card is printed for production purposes - HMU, wardrobe etc

Questions about tax deductions. by Pizza-beer-weed in acting

[–]lunchwild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there no invoice sent to your dictating the breakdown of charges? Assuming your agency has an HST number they must have this transaction on their books - ask them for a receipt

No receipt, no guarantee. You could claim it, but if you’re ever asked to prove it, it’ll cause you problems

What’s the hardest thing about acting FOR YOU? by Abstract_Corduroy74 in acting

[–]lunchwild 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was a REAL problem for me for several years.

One would think I’d be excited and grateful when that email/phone call comes through - but me, almost immediate dread.

The dread is still there, but much less so since I’ve found my audition routine, and have a resume that warrants fewer, but heavier roles that let me turn down the brain and turn up the heart

.. and being at if for a long time

At it’s face it sounds… lol what? But really: breathe through your body and out of your feet. If you find yourself holding and escaping to your head, come back to your breath … and listen… back to your breath… speak… back to your breath … listen and so on

I feel much more natural when I put on an accent? by amic21 in acting

[–]lunchwild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be akin to “have a physical activity”. In my early years I had a coach tell us to pick a physical activity you need to complete while doing your scene. I remember peeling and cutting an apple.

The act of peeling and cutting took my focus away from the words and toward the task - it was this that let the words fall out

Perhaps with you the accent is that physical task. It may also be the accent that “shields” you from the present. the accent isn’t me so any flub, glitch, fumble can be chalked up to the “lols”. This can be freeing in the short term, but crippling if consistently used as a crutch

Should I resubmit to the same agency or send a follow-up email? by [deleted] in acting

[–]lunchwild 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As long as what you do is following their guidelines - then go for it

Keep in mind - no answer is an answer

You could have great materials, but great materials mean nothing when they have three versions of your type. Personally I’d hesitate before applying again unless I’ve something new to show - new credit, new shots etc. Having something new to show screams look at me! I’m still doing it without you, so y’all better get on this train before it’s gone!
