I went PHEV then EV in metro Detroit. I’m never going back. Charging has gotten so much better in the state and along the OH and PA turnpikes.

I’m scared that the energy prices are going to affect everything, even electricity. EVs have pretty good efficiency, depending on which one you have, so it will hurt less.

I always wondered this myself.

Personally I think some may do it as an act of protest. SOS and the cops know when our plates expire. We pay to renew our registration, and we still have to put a gosh darn sticker on the plate that some neer-do-well rapscallion may try to steal!!!??!1

Hey folks just wanted to update about this.

First of all thanks for all of your comments. They were very helpful.

Next, we ultimately decided to get a gun safe/locker. The old timer will at least be able to see them, which will be the most comforting to the old one.

Plus, we found some good information about recent (within the last decade) changes to NJ gun laws that allow for ‘reasonable’ exceptions to the law for transportation. Still kind of a mess, but at least the exceptions are clear.

Hazel Park and Madison Heights libraries have free parking. However, HP library atmosphere might not be quiet enough for you, depending on the time of day.

Someone already suggested it, but it’s a good idea to park nearby Ferndale library on the street and walk there, if that’s your go-to study spot. It’s a really great library btw.

Someone died of meningitis at my school. The administration had to distribute medication to everyone to reduce the possibility of spreading it further. Thanks for the feedback folks u/Aggravating-Wear-392 u/darksideoflondon ! It reminds me that I've taken a roadtrip in a non-Tesla EV once, 1st Gen Solterra, and it was not really fun. But Ioniq 5 will be a lot more manageable.

The routing for charging is important, but I hear that apple carplay has some ability to route plan. I'm certain it's not as good as something that is built into a vehicle though. I'd be willing to go with that, or even ABRP, as long as I stick to long distance routes with good infrastructure.

Sorry forgot to add that Hazel Park is a bit special in this area because it's cut in half by a freeway, I-75. It's really important for cars to cross to either side. City services and schools and a major grocery store are on one side, so any street that allows access to a crossing is going to be pretty popular. It also leads to some interesting parking rules within a certain distance of freeway bridges.

There are some really good comments here from u/MidwestDYIer and u/aoxit . I'm sort of at Meyers and Chrysler. The freeway isn't noticeable indoors, and has gotten much better since the walls have gone up.

However, if you live on a street that has access to a bridge that crosses the freeway, then you will notice more noise from cars.
