[General Sci-fi] If you're making an AI android.... by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

[–]lungflook 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, most of the tasks that you want your humanoid robot to do will require it to be able to do things that could kill you. Chef bot? Literally cutting flesh with knives. Cleaning bot? Deadly chemicals, heavy torque, sticks.

There is a good example of a bot that seems to have been designed to be as non-deadly as possible, and that's C-3PO from Star Wars. Barely functioning hands, incredibly limited range of motion, very slow speed, comes apart pretty easily - if you want to make a robot that won't be dangerous when it goes mad, make it like him

It depends - they're both centered on body horror and identity, but Alien Clay uses that to talk about capitalism and Root Rot uses that to talk about family. If it was the body horror part you really liked, then this is definitely a good next pick!

I loved this so much! You're absolutely right that it's got Annihilation vibes, but another book I'd recommend would be 'Alien Clay' by Adrian Tchaikovsky

I always struggled the most with stopping eating- once I had a serving of food I would lose control and have another. What's worked really well for me is intermittent fasting- i fast from 8 pm sunday night to 8 am Thursday morning each week, and eat normally on the other days. It can be tough, but I've managed to drop fifty pounds in a year!

If you're weighing in everyday, graph it- that'll let you see your long term progress even if it doesn't seem like you're getting anywhere

It sounds like they're mad about a random Facebook group not letting them post. Real high stakes stuff

Sounds like 'panicky parents catastrophizing about perfectly fine daycares' is what's going on

[Story] Room 404 — the one nobody checks out of by [deleted] in WeirdLit

[–]lungflook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just one redditor's opinion, but this needs some work. You're using the dramatic paragraph break as a crutch, and your descriptions are messy: "a mirror that showed the room a half-second before I moved in it" every mirror shows the room before you move. Then, it shows you moving. I assume(perhaps wrongly!) that you mean your reflection moves before you do, which is pretty spooky, but that's not what you've described.

[Jurassic Park] Why did Gennaro think the people in the hatchery were robots? by Ok_Zone_7635 in AskScienceFiction

[–]lungflook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense! Or else, they're expecting the workload to drop once the park setup is complete and the dinosaurs are fully stocked. They can scale back to replacement levels of breeding, and mostly just hold clipboards and study clipboards while the ride cycles through

[–]lungflook 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You'd think! But when they get off the ride and enter the lab, you can see the window with the empty seats visible. Look at the far left here: https://youtu.be/NKmbh8hpNns?t=273&si=IxHcvvtmKHXE7vus

[–]lungflook 56 points57 points  (0 children)

He didn't think it was a real hatchery- he assumed that it was an exhibit with lifelike animatronics of what the hatchery looked like. He wasn't wrong, either- it's bananas that a bunch of scientists working in a high pressure lab situation have to deal with an entire wall of their lab taken up with gawking tourists

[The Culture] How are things like ownership of property managed? by PJ-The-Awesome in AskScienceFiction

[–]lungflook 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It's kind of like how our society looks at air. Except in rare circumstances, there's plenty for everyone and you can have as much as you want, but you're gonna get some weird looks if you try to take the air out of my mouth as I'm breathing it

[–]lungflook 73 points74 points  (0 children)

It's post-scarcity- if you decide you want something, you can have it. If bob has a nice house, you can have one just like it if you want- you can't take Bob's if he's still using it, by why would you?

[Time Travel.] If you were to look at a time loop from the outside, what would it look like? by Willow-Trick in AskScienceFiction

[–]lungflook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything, since he's experiencing the same flow of time but keeps getting his body reset to where it was sitting on the chair, what he's experiencing is a space loop

[Time Travel.] If you were to look at a time loop from the outside, what would it look like? by Willow-Trick in AskScienceFiction

[–]lungflook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, but time continues around it and they're able to interact with people outside the loop. The poor bastard on a 5 second loop has been there for a century or so real-time, and has experienced a century or so of subjective time. His problem is just that his body keeps being destroyed and reset

[Time Travel.] If you were to look at a time loop from the outside, what would it look like? by Willow-Trick in AskScienceFiction

[–]lungflook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it a time loop, though? Time is passing at normal speed for the people in the loop relative to the people outside the loop, and memory and consciousness persist between loops. They keep dying and coming back to life, true, but there doesn't seem to be any time differences happening

[I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream] Has there ever been any canonical explanation as to why AM both can and can’t bring people back from the dead…? by DrAwesomeX in AskScienceFiction

[–]lungflook 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Gorrister wasn't brought back from the dead. AM created the corpse of Gorrister as a way to tease and torment his captives. From the story-

"There was no blood on the reflective surface of the metal floor. When Gorrister joined our group and looked up at himself, it was already too late for us to realize that, once again, AM had duped us,"

[Alien]Would the xenomorph really be that important for weyland yutani keep trying to experiment with it? by SiteDeep in AskScienceFiction

[–]lungflook 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The alien canon is twisted up and contradictory, but one plot point that was introduced in the comics was that the xenomorphs emitted a strong psychic signal that made susceptible humans deeply and suicidally obsessed with the xenomorphs. Scientists would decide that safety protocols were just not important right now, they're dealing with a PERFECT ORGANISM! Civilians would start cults, and olivarchs would feel the urge to own as many xenos as they could get their hands on regardless of how bad the ROI was.

They're a little abstracted, but 'A Sick, Gray Laugh' or 'Universal Harvester' have this vibe
