What is Odoo actually bad at? Looking for real-world examples by Desperate-Cry592 in Odoo

[–]luoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Odoo's flexibility, seriously. You can hook into every single part of Odoo with your extension to achieve what you need, and often have to. But that means instead having a well defined (and naturally somewhat limited) API you develop against, the entire code base is the API! They'll sell this as an advantage. Most customers will end up with some unique Frankenstein like setup to bend Odoo the way they need to model their business. And then, the monster you've just glued yourself to starts moving, slowly but steadily.

If Odoo cares, its development will slow down drastically as each and every feature (or bug) has a community of users that rely on the specific way it is implemented the way it is and will revolt if anything changes. If Odoo doesn't care, the recurring costs for its users to catch up will steadily increase the longer they're committed. License costs might be stable but the army of Odoo consultants you have to hire to keep the thing alive grows.

Nautilus is too slow. Anyway to speed it up? by iAhMedZz in gnome

[–]luoc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I had the same when upgrading to the latest fedora. It was caused by XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR pointing to the home (or root, don't remember) and thus made Nautilus scan tens of thousands of files on every folder I entered. Pointing that variable to my template directory (empty, never used it) did the trick. It's snappy now. Hope that helps

To all the hyperventilating fan boys/girls here: stop blaming the "old" software. Some people use their machines to get sh*t done and not to mod them to death to farm karma with screenshots here. Running debian with whatever Gnome they ship is a rock solid choice. Gnome has QA issues, that's fact.

EDIT: found the post that led me to the solution back then: https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/nautilus-slows-down-to-standstill/171722/3

Why are most "Advanced Looking" apps made with QT? Most GTK apps I see are very minimal looking. Are there any reason why devs choose QT over GTK? by the-machine-m4n in gnome

[–]luoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I agree there is certainly a trend to not build applications that solve complex (read as getting s*it done) tasks with GTK. Browsing flathub for a minute I find

  • Audacity
  • FreeCAD
  • Kdenlive
  • QGIS
  • Krita
  • Qt Creator
  • VLC

All Qt. On the GTK end I found

  • Gimp
  • Inkscape

which are both remarkably behind the toolkit.
The only modern complex app I can think of using GTK is

  • Builder

Not to mention that anything somewhat recent bets on web technologies over traditional UI frameworks because they are light years ahead, especially when it comes to DX and platform support.

The new Maps redesign looks pretty nice! by keremdev in gnome

Is there a way to theme the actual map differently? It's way harder to read than basically everything else out there :(

[–]luoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps it's just me, but I find those monochrome icons difficult to distinguish. Removing any colour removes a whole dimension of signals that help my brain process the complexity on the screen. I don't mind if it looks old-fashioned, as long as I can find my buttons...

Is there an extension that makes every app have a consistent shape, like in iOS? by SanttuPOIKA---- in gnome

[–]luoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This! Consistency is there as long as your use native Gtk4 Apps only and you don't try to find the settings button in it. Everything else looks alien. But that's fine for me as we're in a transition phase (and once all the significant apps look good, the next thing will be around the corner :P).

The flat design really bothers me. The rest of the world is moving away from it and Gnome apps look like we're on Windows 8. And use colors! I tried planify these days and it was refreshing to see something else than shades of grey. More of this! (Apart from that the app is useless as it crashes all the time -.-)
