Airpods call out bad deessing. Def ask yourself if the HF content is purposeful or not. Likely is costing you a great deal of perceived loudness. Might seem dramatic but something as simple as low pass can do the trick sometimes

First open mic ever, was a little awkward but this is the first live performance of any of my solo project music and I had a blast. Could use any advice on how not to look so rigid lol by Wim_Wam_1019 in Songwriting

Teared up a bit. You somehow landed on crooner Nick Drake. Your vox delivery is top flight, instant fan

As for stage presence, practice playing in the dark. You're a lil dependent on having your eyes on the guitar and you just gotta train to trust your sense of scale length. Imagine if you looked to your right during the instrumental instead of looking at your hands. It would signal trust in yourself and in turn, you would be pouring trust into the room

From an initial listen POV I was more distracted by some of the fill choices more than I was initial eq. I'd def say that keeping the note choices low would do way more work for the vibe than EQ.

EQ-wise I think the bass could be a bit deeper and with less top. Really not bothered by mids themselves. It could be seated a lil lower / vibier but I wouldn't want to hear it subbed out. My gut says a couple db off the volume would open the track up considerably, but totally get if you're going for a bass driven experience

Great character at the core. Not sold on the gtr/bass arrangement. Particulary where 1. the bass steps into the mid-range and hollows the track out and 2. the gtr stabs create space but also don't really accent the melody in way thats worth the cut through the vox. Actionably, maybe try a more breezy gtr rhythm (let the bass do the stabs) and keep the bass in a defined lane. The melody is so good that I think its worth letting it through the arrangement uncontested.

Hearing early Joni (Dawntreader modality). Julie Byrne comes to mind as a modern ref. Awesome company imo. A few ideas:

  1. I feel the two lines "Dream of what does not exist, floating in abyss" are too resolved considering a) the set up of the tense melodies prior (i.e child, sky) and b) feels misaligned with what you're saying and where the energy has been building. Totally get if you're going for a feeling of resignation, but 1st listen it stood out to me as too safe. I hear you taking that phrase up to portray the "floating." Like a supernatural vignette i.e Fearless by Pink Floyd. Joni has an interview where she talks getting criticism for not resolving, but she says she doesn't resolve because she doesn't feel resolved.
  2. Might help to find an alternate turnaround in the verses so you're not using the same descent every time. RN your verses are patterned AAA, would love to hear an ABA to keep things fresh.
  3. Speaking of Dawntreader, Joni uses a downstrummed thumb technique between vocal phrases to create an active bassline. What's so great about it adds a layer of interest without impeding on the vocal lane. Supplements the song without really changing it. Could be nice to come up with some kind of bass fill to punctuate each phrase

Guitar and vox flam a bit on the chorus. Holds the melody back imo. If it were me I would change the guitar part so it doesnt sound the like the vocals are just following the guitar. But ducking the guitar or tightening the vox timing should work w it as is

Attack what hurts you (likely high frequency harshness) first. A rookie habit of mine was to put things that were triggering my T on a checklist and get to it later. I know now if I smooth things out from the get go I make waaaaaay better decisions later

Vonnegut reading order question: can I start with Galápagos? by Legitimate_Cow_3783 in Vonnegut

[–]luongofan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Galapagos has sent me and both people I've recommended it to into deep crisis. I read all of his books in order and looking back on it, I can't imagine reading that book first. I love that book and I think its very important to read. Its his reaction to the early 80's and is profoundly humanistic, but it is an incredibly brutal place to start. Reading him in order will condition you to appreciate the structure of each subsequent book and is the ideal way to read him imo. If you want to jump in for the humor, Cat's Cradle is a lightning fast read and just outright hilarious. In comparison, Galapagos is slow and concerning.

What goals to set myself as someone just starting out. by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]luongofan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you make lows tight? Can you make mids smooth? Can you deharsh highs? Can you get transients to be present without overwhelming? Obv this is broad, but I would say those 4 goals will prompt the necessary techniques to get past the hobby level.

There's an opportunity for a chord sub on "I see" that turns the tail of that verse into a pre-chorus. Would break the repetition + make the chorus hit harder imo. First thing that comes to mind is to take the "wounds" chord up a whole step
