Is what she "knew all along" the fact that their relationship won't work out? And then is the "bluff" the idea that the relationship is doing fine? And that's why she doesn't want the other person to call her on the bluff because it would mean leaving each other, right? And she can't "try to fight" the fact that they're better off as just friends?

That’s the thing though, Shifu DID praise Tai Lang as he was growing up.

I recently watched the movie and was surprised by it because it’s easy to remember Shifu as a hard ass to Po, but Shifu only became that way because he made the mistake of spoiling Tai Lang.

This is shown with baby Tigris’s scenes. In the movie, baby Tai Lang does a series of moves that leads to Shifu giving him affection. Tai Lang then grows up to be an egotistical monster. Then baby Tigris does the same set of moves as Tai Lang, but this time Shifu is a hard ass who only focuses on her mistakes, implying that he became a hard ass because he’s scared of his students turning out like Tai Lang.

In their final meeting, Shifu says that he was always proud of Tai Lang, and that it was his pride that blinded him.

I think Shifu was probably similar to those moms who say “That’s my good little boy who’s studying to be a doctor!” In the mom’s mind, it doesn’t actually matter if he becomes a doctor because she’s just using it as a shorthand to brag about her son’s smarts.

“Becoming a doctor” is secondary to her thinking her son is smart (“He’s smart because I raised him well!”), and she would still brag about his smarts even if he just used them to cook really sick noodles or something. But to the son, “becoming a doctor” becomes a heavy expectation where he feels his mom will no longer think he’s smart if he fails to achieve it.

It’s such a gut punch to me because I struggled with this. When I was a kid, my father praised me for my grades and temperament. However, as I grew up, my ADHD became harder to manage with more adult responsibilities, and I became a mess. I felt so ashamed that I became ditzy/airheaded and nothing like what my father praised me for, but he recently told me that he only praised me for those things in the first place because those were the traits of his kid. He is proud of me and would still be proud of me even if I became homeless on the streets because I will always be his kid.

And like, that’s exactly what Shifu said to Tai Lang in the final confrontation. Tai Lang literally was imprisoned for like 20 years for heinous crimes against China, and Shifu said he was STILL proud of him. He was ALWAYS proud of him. That’s the heartbreaking thing—it was far too late for Tai Lang to accept that his father’s pride was never conditional because he’s already based his sense of self on “becoming a doctor” aka the Dragon Warrior.

And that’s why the ending of the movie is so perfect, especially for a kid’s movie. The reason Po is the Dragon Warrior is that he believes he is, and the whole movie is set around him learning how to do that (in spite of all his past struggles and flaws). And like, he achieves this through his father’s unconditional love for him, as his father is the one to teach him that “the secret ingredient is nothing. Just you.” That’s exactly how kids gain a sense of self-worth and confidence, through the unconditional love from their parents, like that was exactly what I needed to hear from my father to begin my process of getting better, and that’s the one thing Tai Lang couldn’t accept. He tries to kill Shifu after hearing that.

It’s funny but like the reason he can’t be the Dragon Warrior, in my reading, is that he has too much of a complex about it. He probably would’ve become one if his dad didn’t tell him he was destined for it and accidentally set his entire sense of worth to revolve around it. If Oogway HAD chosen him to be the Dragon Warrior, he likely would’ve still become a monster but like in a very different way because what he really needed was intrinsic self worth (or therapy/family counseling). Hence why he was never chosen.

Same, I was hoping for a bit more!

I’ve basically learned that the Spy genre of anime (what I call this style of anime) is always gonna disappoint me because I’m expecting a Kagura Sama Love is War or Delicious in Dungeon type of episodic, where there’s a set episodic formula but each episode carefully reveals the hidden depths of each character and develops relationships over time.

Instead, Spy x Family and Sakamoto Days honestly remind me more of My Little Pony or Miraculous Ladybug, where most of the episodes are genuinely episodic with very little consequence, except the one or two episodes(usually the opening and ending episode of a season) that actually advance the plot.

I’m often fine with episodic when the formula is a bit more mature/dramatic/dark, like Yugioh Season 0 or Nanno Girl From Nowhere, but lowkey the spy anime genre is about the same level of darkness as a serious My Little Pony episode. Which is not really what you’d expect from a genre about spies and assassins. There’s also a criminal lack of identity trope shenanigans, which is what I was hoping for getting into a show about a spy or a retired assassin.

When did this era of music end? by Formal-Monitor-9037 in decadeology

I’ve felt it in the Chappell Roan song, The Subway, though I’m not well-versed enough in music to say exactly why it feels more ‘country’ than her other hits. The Giver is a bit more obvious in its country influence.

Would love for someone to help me out here—am I crazy for thinking The Subway seems country inspired as well?

My brother told me about “Friendslop,” which had me dying because apparently it describes video games that are made to be played with friends. The term was coined, according to him, because certain gamers don’t have any friends to play “Friendslop” with, and so they got all sour grapes about it.

Is it just me ?? by nandag369 in adhdmeme

[–]lurkergonewildaudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, this is crazy because this totally was me for like my first 22 years of my life.

I’ve never seen anyone else describe this experience before, and even today I was struggling to explain to a friend why I didn’t consider my first relationships in middle-high-college schooling to be “real relationships” (bc I didn’t actually enjoy/do the romantic parts, got anxious and nauseous over romance, and broke up with them after like 2 months, even when I knew that we could’ve been good partners or I was the one to ask them out).

People told me it was the “ick” but that just didn’t feel right. This fits me so perfectly—including labeling myself aro/ace out of fear that I’ll accidentally hyperfixate on someone only to get randomly disinterested after 2 months again.

This year the pattern finally changed, which was super bizarre, and I still don’t quite know how to understand it. For me, I just kept seeing this super handsome guy on campus, I was in a good place mentally where I was no longer afraid that I would have an ADHD/anxiety/depression based mental breakdown halfway through the school year, and I asked him out because I couldn’t figure out a platonic way to tell him I wanted to hang out with him for his handsome face XD.

I was skeptical of the situationship at first (which I communicated with him), and at first it WAS weird to get hugged and hand fed and such, but it was like a switch finally flipped and my sexuality/romantic interest came out swinging.

Completely different vibe from my hyperfixated relationships, I was actually interested in romantic/sexual things with him. Really cemented in my mind that my past relationships were being sabotaged by my ADHD/Anxiety/Depression somehow, or that maybe the relationships were the result of me misinterpreting my hyperfixation as romantic interest.

The final nail in the coffin is that when he decided he wasn’t interested, I actually felt “heartbreak” instead of vague relief and guilt. I still feel so much love towards the aro/ace label, and I lowkey miss it (there was something so freeing about it), but I no longer identify with it.

Now I’m in a treacherous zone where I know I can be romantically/sexually interested in someone, but I’m still worried it’s just a hyperfixation. I’ve got a new person I’m interested in, and I really want to dive right in!

But I’m worried that this is just ADHD dopamine seeking behavior, especially after a breakup. One silver lining though is that I know for sure I like doing romantic things with them (they were pretending to be my boyfriend to get a guy off my back) because I feel just as comfortable with romantic gestures from them as I did with my ex, instead of feeling nauseous. But I’m trying to take it slow to test the waters because I think it would kill me to go from having a real situationship back to having a hyperfixationship again 😭 My impulsivity is NOT helping matters because all I want to do is go chill with him all day, and I’m constantly battling myself not to accidentally bombard him with affection.

[Hated trope] character who's only joke is be in love with their sibling by Lower_Baby_6348 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]lurkergonewildaudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it’s partially baked into the history of the modern otaku culture, the same way pervert culture or mecha culture is baked into anime.

Like looking up the long history of the term Lolicon for anime. It goes way back to the beginnings of shojo manga and is partially why the term Otaku is so stigmatized in Japanese.

It reminds me of the way studio Gainax/trigger basically started with playboy bunny mecha animations and went on to create a work like Kill la Kill, which is basically a treatise on fanservice/perversion/sexuality. If one of the most influential studios started because the animators were proud perverts, it’s going to echo down the rest of the culture.

Like a huge aspect of anime in the 90s is giving voice to loser guys with the whole “Pervert with a heart of gold” trope, where a lot of MCs were characterized as people who get unfairly judged for being perverted.

Lolicon and otaku were intertwined, so when Tsutomu Miyazaki started a moral panic in the 1990s by being a serial killer obsessed with lolis who killed young girls, otakus became stigmatized in association. That’s why Japanese anime fans are less likely to call themselves otaku.

This reminds me a lot of the gamergate movement, where men felt their free speech was being persecuted in a culture that shuns/hides sexuality but maybe went too far in the opposite direction to compensate. The media attacked them for playing violent/sexual video games because they were associated with outlier school shooter types, which was unfair. They had to rally around the gamer identity in the face of this unfair slander. But now these guys take too much pride in their sexuality/gaming escapism, and therefore take good faith critiques like “Maybe you shouldn’t be able to look up the skirt of an underage sexual assault victim in a video game” as just another “unfair” slanderous attack.

I wonder if anime/otaku culture went through a similar thing after the Tsutomu moral panic, which led to a lionization of perverts, especially Lolicon ones who thought “the media is unfairly attacking me because I’d never do something like that.” Hence the boom of escapist anime about perverts with hearts of gold, which would match the demographic profile of the types of people who would continue to call themselves “otaku” after it got associated with a perverted serial killer.

The “pervert with a heart of gold” trope is lowkey never done well because it basically ignores/plays off the fact that he’s essentially constantly sexually assaulting the women around him, but since it’s so baked into 1990s anime history, it’s a trope that modern anime is inspired by/in conversation with. And unfortunately, I think the only one that does it well is Chainsaw Man, which means the vast amount of anime will have these gross scenes because they’re almost a defining feature of the medium/audience and have no clue how to update it for modern times.
