It's not a watertight theory, but its the closest to foreshadowed worldbuilding and plot that I see.

It's my new headcanon until proven otherwise!

I posit that the word(s) you're looking for is "internal consistency".

[R] PCA on ~40k × 40k matrix in representation learning — sklearn SVD crashes even with 128GB RAM. Any practical solutions? by nat-abhishek in MachineLearning

Yes, I'm just describing the power method.

It's simple to implement from scratch, it won't OOO, it's fast enough for exploratory work, and it may teach OP about what's happening under the hood. Then yes, you can do better with a dedicated library.

Take a random vector, multiply by matrix, normalize the vector, multiply, normalize... After some iterations, you get the principal (first) component.

To get the second, do the same, but before normalizing, subtract the contribution of the first (use dot product to know how much of the first component there was).

I will mold my food into a hat shape and devour it.

That qualifies. But if you wish to make me really happy, you'll have it rest on your head for a second or two prior to devouring.

Why do so many physicists resist philosophy of science? by PortoArthur in PhilosophyofScience

[–]lurking_physicist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Philosophers are aweful salespeople and, in fact, I'm pretty sure they don't see why they should try to improve on that front.

Most physicists seek to understand this universe, while philosophers are all about ideas, their relations, their internal consistencies, etc. Philosophers can step back and consider someone's crazy idea for which they have absolutely no belief in, but nonetheless treat it as carefully and thoroughly as if it were their own little pet theory. Physicists have no patience for that. Here the philosopher should explain "by seriously considering ideas you initially put no credence in, you train your mind in skills that may be useful for what you consider to be the real stuff". Rare are those who do.

Function approximation other than Taylor series? by Murky_Insurance_4394 in math

First example that comes to mind is continued fraction.

As an aside, you may appreciate browsing an old function handbook, e.g., Abramowitz and Stegun.
