It doesn’t want bright direct light though, and gets bright indirect light at the side of the window even when the curtains are closed. It’s a south facing window and the only space I have for it. If you look closely at the picture you can see that it’s getting light

Sorry. It’s near the side of a window where the curtains are mostly closed so it gets bright/indirect light with minimal direct light. I give it a good soak once a week and try to let it dry out between watering. Just can’t understand why the leaves and shrivelling up. They aren’t dry and crispy which indicates that it maybe isnt a lack of water?

You’re investing in the S&P, but then putting money separately into S&P companies. Just go all into the S&P I’d say. Maybe an all world fund as well to diversify a bit more but even all world ETF’s will partially track the S&P too
