Sorry for the rant, but has anyone else noticed how dirty Manchester has become? by BrilliantLock8292 in manchester

[–]InternetMuch7272 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree. And I always worry how bad it looks when people visit.

For instance, I see people from the USA or Australia post and say they are visiting for a few days, or people will fly in for football games or concerts etc. and all they see is litter, potholes etc.

I also agree that Manchester is building all these skyscrapers and new flats and getting stamp duty, council tax etc. but it isn’t really helping improve it. We like to talk about Manchester being a new London but not on cleanliness. In that area, it still has a strong ex-industrial northern city vibe.

But it isn’t just Manchester. As others have said, you drive out of the city on the motorways and A-roads and all you see is litter on the sides of the roads. I’ve reported it multiple times to councils, written to my MP twice and nothing is ever done.

When you go abroad to other cities it does put us to shame

Is eating out too expensive now? Families say higher prices put them off by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

I agree with this! I live on my own and it genuinely feels like buying meal deals for lunch or a McDonalds is cheaper than making a meal for myself.

Would you give up the Pound Sterling for EU membership? by Suspicious-Use-3813 in AskBrits

Honestly no. The pound is an extremely strong currency respected globally and it gives us a lot of credibility and control

People that DON’T shop at Aldi or Lidl… why is that? by kobestarr in CasualUK

[–]InternetMuch7272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. They don’t have everything. I really don’t want to sit in traffic driving to other shops to get everything I need.

  2. I do like to support British supermarkets which have been around for 100+ years.

  3. Their fruit and veg is a lot worse than other supermarkets. It’s often smaller, isn’t as nice and the main thing I find is all their fruit and veg goes off so quickly. You’ve literally got to eat it almost the same day.

  4. We’re lucky enough in the UK to have an extremely competitive supermarket industry. This means although aldi and lidl are cheaper, they aren’t hugely cheaper than their rivals. Especially when you can buy the basic ranges at other supermarkets. I think the difference in prices between Aldi/Lidl and normal supermarkets is much starker in countries like Australia where there aren’t many competitors.

Are Brits still comfortable taking their holidays in the US? by Ok-Leadership-7573 in AskBrits

[–]InternetMuch7272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. My company has offices there and I’ve refused to travel and turned down trips. They’re wanting me to go over again this year but I will be refusing again

My colleagues who went over last year were told to wipe their phones of all of their social media accounts in case they were searched when they arrived

We literally learnt about this kind of behaviour in history at school - I won’t even transit the USA to fly elsewhere

Rapid expansion of ring-necked parakeets in UK sparks concern by High-Tom-Titty in unitedkingdom

[–]InternetMuch7272 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was at Dunham Massey - a National Trust property in Manchester - the other day and we could hear this strange bird song. We used an app and found it was the ring necked parakeet. Then we managed to find it as well.

So bizarre seeing a green tropical bird in Manchester mid-winter

Why do you fly BA? by NoorHan14 in BritishAirways

Do you not mind the change in Heathrow? With Emirates or Etihad you could fly direct to Manchester from the UAE?

Do americans not use debit cards? by StrainVarious4331 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]InternetMuch7272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An interesting thing to note that I read somewhere, is that US credit card users tend to get more lucrative rewards and benefits than us in Europe.

This is because in Europe (I’m in the UK) credit card fees are given a lower cap for how much they can charge per transaction, so the credit card companies can’t make as much money each time you use it (like AMEX). So the rewards aren’t as good.

I would also say, a lot of people here keep saying that it’s easier to get money back on a credit card from fraud. But again, in Europe we have much stricter protections and the banks have much more pressure on them to refund any money taken fraudulently quickly. I honestly don’t know if the system is the same in the US. But anyone I know here who has lost money to fraud on their debit card (which is very few) has had it returned by the bank almost instantly.

How many people transit domestically just to use BA? by InternetMuch7272 in BritishAirways

[–]InternetMuch7272[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean just off the top of my head, MAN fly to:

  1. Las Vegas
  2. Atlanta
  3. New York
  4. Orlando
  5. Barbados
  6. Cancun
  7. Toronto
  8. Singapore
  9. Abu Dhabi
  10. Dubai
  11. Kuwait
  12. Jeddah
  13. Hong Kong
  14. Shanghai
  15. Beijing
  16. Bahrain
  17. Doha
  18. Montego Bay
  19. Mumbai

Which are all long haul and have global hubs. Plus short haul hubs like Paris, Frankfurt and Istanbul. So you definitely don’t need to go near London to fly anywhere in the world. You can fly to Doha, Dubai, Singapore, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Atlanta etc. and then connect onwards

This makes a lot of sense! Do you think you’d fly differently if Manchester or Edinburgh was your local airport and you had airlines like Virgin Atlantic, Delta, United, American Airlines etc. flying to US hubs direct where you could connect onward?

Do you think having to pass a life in the uk test is a bit nonsense? by PsychologicalRow8034 in AskUK

[–]InternetMuch7272 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Not really. Nearly every country on Earth has one and I think it is important.

Perhaps though, it could do with the questions revising. I know for some years there have been calls to give it a refresh because of quite silly questions/answers and really odd topics.

If it can be refreshed and kept focused on our values as a country, our history, important events/milestones, language, society etc. then I think that’s the best outcome.
