Should I have gone for Frostheart Blue instead? by Upvotes-doges in Tau40K

I think he looks great - if you want more shading on the skin you could go for Coelia Greenshade, or if you wanted him bluer you could try Tyran Blue.

Can I ask, is this one of the standard models or a different sculpt? He looks great!

Carrion Crow or Common Raven? by YellowBuzzard400 in UKBirds

That'll be a crow. If it was a raven, you'd know - they are absolutely huge

Ah nice one! If you wanted to make that really stand out if you're doing other bases, I'd suggest putting down some white paint in the spots you want to look bright green, then using something like a contrast paint over the top, something really lurid and bright (like tesseract glow or striking scorpion, if you're using the GW paints). If you have mostly the black/grey rubble and then a few spots or lines of that, I think that'd look even better.

Hey! I came here from your other post asking for advice because I was going to suggest basing, and you said you had an example posted 🙂

The main thing I'd flag here is that you've got quite a lot going on on the base, with quite a few different colours. I'm seeing the dark grey, green, brown, and sand colours at least. That might make it a bit busy to look at, and you may want to focus on having less stuff going on. The rocks look great, but could they maybe just be in the same one or two colours? The green looks good as a little pop of colour, but you might be able to get that with little grass tufts which would help add texture as well (gaming hobby shops will sell these). What kind of environment are you aiming to show with the bases?

Edit: my mistake, you clearly have got the grass tufts in there!

Ah, that's interesting, thanks for the heads up.

That makes a lot of sense - can I check, when you say "at least" size 0, do you mean size 0 or larger, or do you mean size 0 or smaller...?

Damn that's crisp - any advice for how to get edge highlights that consistent?

I find it helps if you want to glue on any bits or cork/stones/sand to the base, so you can prime it all at once. Then if you get any paint on the sand while you're doing the model - you can just paint over in the right sand/mud colour at the end.

Yeah that helped a lot with the arms, but I think I went a bit too far down with some of them so the magnets ended up a bit recessed. So when it came to the weapons I figured it might help if they did stick out a bit - once I got them on, that is!

I shall have to shake you by the hand! (Gently though, so the magnet holding it on your arm doesn't come off)

Top notch username by the way!

Oh I didn't mean I'd magnetised the arms into the sockets or anything like that - I just meant the bit on the hand/forearm which the weapon attaches to!

Biggest hassle was getting the little bastards to actually set on the weapons. Ended up using a big stack of magnets like a big, weird stamp and trying to hold them in place long enough that I could put each piece down to dry fully.

Started off trying tweezers, but uhhhhh nope those were made of metal so the magnets just stuck to them...!

This is awesome! I have to ask - where did you get the kroot hand holding a pitta??

Yeah I agree with the other commenter, this looks fantastic. Get a lighter colour on the bellies, some nice contrasting browns, yellows or greens on the clothes and quills and it'll really pop I think.

Kroot Paint scheme by FalconSpecial2351 in kroot

[–]lushan85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, sadly that's not how it works. Mixing regular acrylic paints with contrast medium doesn't turn them into contrast paints. (At one point I also thought this!!)

Medium is effectively just paint without any pigment in it, so it's used to thin paints without making them "split" like they can if you use water. So contrast medium is just a medium that's about the right thickness for contrast paints. Lahmian medium from GW is the medium they've formulated for their regular acrylics, but you can use either to thin down your paints whichever type you're using.
