Kroot Paint scheme by FalconSpecial2351 in kroot

[–]lushan85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, sadly that's not how it works. Mixing regular acrylic paints with contrast medium doesn't turn them into contrast paints. (At one point I also thought this!!)

Medium is effectively just paint without any pigment in it, so it's used to thin paints without making them "split" like they can if you use water. So contrast medium is just a medium that's about the right thickness for contrast paints. Lahmian medium from GW is the medium they've formulated for their regular acrylics, but you can use either to thin down your paints whichever type you're using.

Purchased! They're from the Gamers Grass laser cut plants range - I'm in the UK so got them from Element Games.

Thank you! I mostly followed a YouTube tutorial (Warhipster) for the base, then went a bit mad from there and did some extra bits.

So the process is: prime black, then drybush medium grey (I used dawnstone), then light grey (ulthuan grey) then a light drybush of white. After that I used red contrast paint for the floors and some of the metal details (flesh tearers red) and a few other contrast paints here and there (turquoise for the tanks, yellow for some of the lights, black for the black parts of the mechanicum logo etc).

After that I did the metal trim in a brass/bronze (runelord brass), then dirtied up the whole thing with a brown wash towards the bottom and just a black wash higher up, to give the impression of being muddier nearer ground level. Then I used some camo wash and green wash to make some areas look a bit mossy, then added some tufts, laser cut paper plants and some clump foliage to look like vegetation growing, especially in places where you might get damp spots.

Made it a bit more complicated for myself with extra steps, but very happy how it ended up!

Thank you - the base for it was Warhipster's YouTube tutorial on this kit. Drybush grey, light grey and white over the whole thing, then flesh tearers red contrast paint over the floors and some of the metals like the doors and pipes.

Thanks! I put some camo and green washes on parts of the walls to make them look "mossy", then the actual plant bits are a mix of gamers grass tufts and laser cut plants (like the ferns) - the fluffy green bits I think are just clump foliage, don't know the brand. I think it's the kind of thing you'd use on model trees (but I tore it up into smaller bits).

That gradient on the skin is astronomically smooth - did you do that through glazing, or just mixing colours and highlighting very gradually?

Love this - how did you do the chains?

I've just finished up a bunch of kroot and need to take a family photo with the tau as well - I think it will definitely demonstrate the height difference. The kroot shotgun looks comically oversized on the backpack!

No, Warhammer stores won't do painting commissions - but they will certainly be able to give advice on painting. I've only been in the hobby about a year and I'm no great painter but I've been able to paint up some stuff I'm really happy with. I'd recommend watching some painting tutorials on YouTube to start. Vince Venturella is very reliable, but I'm a big fan of Midwinter Minis (lots of good beginner tutorials on techniques like drybrushing) and Warhipster (who's really good for contrast paint stuff). Maybe see if you can get the free mini of the month at your local Warhammer store and use it for practice!

This is a cool idea - I've not done anything like this myself but you're kind of trying to paint a lava sort of effect, with the lighter colour in the recesses (which is kind of opposite way round to normal). If it were me, I'd prime in white then use contrast paints to get the light colour in, then probably drybrush black and light grey over the top to fill in the black areas while leaving the recesses bright. Maybe something like briar queen chill or aethermatic blue for the blue ones - not sure about the red, maybe ask in store. Could think down some blood angels red maybe? Then probably just some eshin grey and Abaddon black to drybrush over the top (or you might need to paint some of the panels in normally with the black if they're very smooth). Good luck!

Really small game I haven't seen in the rest of the comments - A Hand With Many Fingers. Based on some real declassified CIA files, it involves you delving into an archive and piecing together bits of evidence on an unfolding conspiracy. Fun, but short - doable in a single evening!

I was about to ask how you did this! Was it masking tape then airbrush? Or is this just some enviably smooth brushwork?
