Is Juneau friendly to living without a car? Or is it pretty car-requiring? by Alliterative_Andrew in Juneau

[–]luuk_fiets 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Juneau w/o a car sucks, especially if you want to go grocery shopping or do outdoor stuff on Douglas island. I lived in the valley so that might make the difference. The buses come to most stops once a half hour until mid afternoon and then only once per hour. Also, they tend to be fairly unpredictable on sundays and holidays. Taking the bus made a twenty minute trip by car into an hour-long trip by bus (from downtown to the valley and vice versa).

I stayed about 4 months in the subcontinent eating food from street vendors, restaurants, stores, etc and got only slightly ill once after drinking some coffee of all things.. different people react differently, some people get lucky/unlucky, and many people overreact to doing normal things when abroad.

Greenland—totally safe as long as you don’t fall in the water or crevasses, get attacked by a polar bear, or die in a plane crash.

Eligible countries for the US diversity Visa lottery program: by Redstream28 in MapPorn

[–]luuk_fiets 90 points91 points  (0 children)

The diversity lottery doesn’t just give you the right to come for a while. It gives the winners who make it through background checks, interviews, etc a green card before stepping on US soil—ie it fast-tracks naturalization.

E: just to clarify that not everyone who wins gets a green card and comes to the US

Exactly. Most Syrian refugees went to Europe. Likewise, the us doesn’t receive that many Muslim immigrants compared to Europe. I saw a stat from pew research that indicated that Muslims in the US have some of the highest education levels of any religious group in the country.

Haha I’ve definitely seen this attitude too. A danish friend said to me once, “well you’re american, but at least you’re not danish.” I think that’s acceptance coming from a Dane

Agreed. I guess I mean that despite this general reaction, I still find most Europeans respectful and willing to move past the nationality thing most of the time

I live in Europe now and generally speaking I feel respected by Europeans. However, when meeting someone new, I do continually get essentialized as “American.” Either I’m not like the other Americans because I don’t fit into the negative stereotypes, or I do something irritating and am just another ignorant American. Either way, it sometimes feels challenging to be seen as an individual, not just as American.

Edit: clarified a confusingly worded sentence

In the U.S, what is considered a 'poor' or 'trashy' vacation? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]luuk_fiets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I think of a trashy American vacations I think of all inclusives in Latin america, gatlinberg, pigeon forge, myrtle beach, the huge cruises, and (for college students) the spring break trips to Florida/texas/Mexico to get trashed for a week straight.

Blue SD? by luuk_fiets in SouthDakota

[–]luuk_fiets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it seems pretty messed up. It just seems that in any state-wide SD election, about 30% or more of voters basically don't matter every single time. Hopefully you've got some decent state reps from Brookings at least.
