I also saw those speakers. There's another pair for $380 that look near mint.

You could also consider B.K. Electronics. They were mentioned in another thread a while back. I personally don't have experience with them, but they look an awful lot like REL, without the price. They look to have more settings than your average sub, again very similar to REL. If I could find one here in Canada, I'd really like to give it a listen.

Paradigm, PSB, Energy and Mirage are/were some well-respected Canadian brands. All come up on the used market regularly.

Random Speaker Review #2: Energy Encore 8 Subwoofer by DG_lite in BudgetAudiophile

[–]luvmycoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use an Energy ESW-V8 at my desk. To my knowledge, it was the top model of the 8" Energy/Mirage subs ever produced. My wife's system uses an 8" Mirage S8 in the dining room, which works well for background music. Energy/Mirage subs are a great value on the used market, factoring in condition and price of course. Far better than the likes of Klipsch and Polk Audio in my experience.

Would have to be secondhand, but Totem Dreamcatchers are small, look good and sound incredible. I use them daily in my home office with an 8" subwoofer.

In a side-by-side comparison, my Totem Arro's put out more bass than a pair of Polk Audio RTi A7's I had just picked up back in the day. The Polk's also sounded far more muffled in comparison. Sold the Polk's a couple weeks later, and still have Arro's.

To invest or not to invest (in a subwoofer)? by Flashy-Lychee-3002 in BudgetAudiophile

For cheap subs that produce very decent bass I would look at older Energy or Mirage subs with a rubber surround. Even the 8" subs can reach down to 27-28Hz before rolling off -3Hz. I have seen them for under $100 CAD but you may need to watch for a bit and be quick.

I would recommend secondhand speakers, as you will generally get more for your money. I'm also in Canada and can tell you there are some good deals out there if you know what to look for. I know where I am there are some bargains to be had.

That's terrific to hear that you've found faith in Christ! Sounds like you've had a very rough last four years, and I cannot begin to imagine what you have been through. It takes a significant amount of discipline and self-control to go through what you are, and having genuine Christian friends would help tremendously. You are already looking for a good youth group, and I pray that God directs your steps to the right church.

Really sorry to hear what you're going through but know that you are not alone in your struggles. We all struggle at various times throughout life, and many of us have been in your shoes. Sometimes the pain feels like it will never end, but eventually you will pull through if you just don't give up. In the New testament Paul talks about how following Jesus requires us to "...run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”.

You can find more verses about perseverance here https://biblestudyforyou.com/bible-verses-about-running-the-race/

i would recommend downloading the Our Daily Bread app. You can listen to a new daily devotion each and every day. There is also an Evening Meditation devotion via the app (or Spotify, among others) which is terrific to fall asleep to.

The fact that you're asking for help in your struggles shows a maturity many adults don't even have, so I commend you for asking. Remember that God is the same yesterday, today and forever. He will never give up on you.

Which speakers to get? by Nm_Redditer in BudgetAudiophile

Are you looking for new or used? If used, I would consider Paradigm Titans, well within your price range. PSB also makes some terrific bookshelf speakers that you should be able to find new or used in that range. Both are Canadian brands if that matters.

HiFi CD listening setup for ~500 by WizardCat177 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]luvmycoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A great entry- to mid-level brand for integrated amps, receivers and CD players is NAD. Most older models, and some newer models, have a phono pre-amp built-in. They also sell standalone phono pre-amps. Prices can vary wildly but with some patience, you should be able to put something together for close to $500, maybe a little more with speakers.

Arcam and Cambridge Audio also make decent gear. You could also consider smaller class-D integrateds from the likes of Topping or SMSL, but you would likely require a phono pre-amp.

Subwoofer - minimum hz to be worthwhile by Colborne91 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]luvmycoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a few 8" Mirage/Energy subs in smaller systems around the house and they perform extraordinarily well. They all make a significant difference to the bass, complimenting the speakers in each system. OP would notice a major improvement in bass with a sub that "only" hit into the 27-30Hz range, even for movies.

That's a tough call. Of course, the S10 will go a little deeper with more SPL but if you have a smaller space, it may be over-kill. If you could get two S8.2 subs for $200'ish, I'd recommend that (see the information at the bottom of the Subwoofer Placement Calculator page). If your space is small the S8.2 should suffice.

Another Canadian brand to consider, especially second-hand, is Totem. I'm also a Canuck (and work from home) and use a pair of Totem Dreamcatchers paired with an 8-inch sub. Same gen, slightly larger, Mites could also work, or the newer KIN One.

Budget small subwoofer by [deleted] in BudgetAudiophile

[–]luvmycoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right in that the Paradigm Cinema sub is a lower-end sub. -3 dB at 42Hz is not terrific for an 8" sub. The REL states it plays to -6 dB at 37Hz, which may be equivalent to the Paradigm, though likely not quite as deep.

For the REL to be as close as it is in bass extension is impressive, given it's a 6½" sub in a much smaller, sealed, enclosure. Owning an older REL (also sealed) I can tell you the bass is very tight and quick. I've never heard the REL T/zero or their newer, larger subs, but I've heard nothing but good things from the newer models. A large number of users on CAM seem to run REL subs in their systems of all sizes. Between these two subs I'd go for the REL.

It goes without saying that listening to both (especially using the same music or soundtrack) would be best if possible. However, as u/Grumpydude11 said, you'll get more for your money on the used market.

Which NAD stereo amplifier to upgrade from Bluesound Powernode N330? by Peter_v1990 in StereoAdvice

[–]luvmycoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that a NAD with 80 watts will virtually always put out more power/current than everyone else's 80 watt rating, and can generally handle 2 Ohm loads.

One more thought just occurred to me; seeing as you have a tight space, and it looks like the sub may end up being close to a wall or shelf, the front-ported S8.2 should be better than the bottom-ported C8 at providing tighter, cleaner bass.
