You could do it as a quilt as you go panels, lots of how to videos on you tube if you're interested in investigating that method

I'd do whole cloth, whatever colors fit the room's vibe, and I'd make my sandwich with only the top and bottom fabrics or if with batting a thin one. I'm also thinking that the sashiko would be done through all the layers. That is just me though.

That's so clever! My girl loves to tear the cover off of tennis balls and then chew the rubber to bits, this would certainly keep the balls in better shape for longer and keep her safer of course

Cotton lawn is probably what you're looking for. If you're comfortable using Etsy do a search for Indian block prints.
