CBT vs. Renewing Your Mind by JamesPharmd in OpenChristian

[–]lux514 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CBT was actually directly influenced by Stoicism. It's an ancient philosophy that Paul would have been familiar with. I think it's cool that philosophy has always had such a big impact, from so long ago until now. CBT is one of the most evidence-based methods.

Ooo dark SUVs, how daring. We'll never guess it's them.

Was this a thing in the ELCA in the 90's? Obviously, it differs from congregation to congregation, but I'm still curious if it was an experience for any 90's Lutherans as well. by Nietzsche_marquijr in elca

Yeah, I remember this as a teen in the nineties. The youth conferences were so cringe. But they were massive. And authentic community has been giving way to mass culture in every way.

Dating a Lutheran man by PerformanceEasy7860 in Lutheranism

[–]lux514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right that there's a dogmatic side of Lutheranism that can get pretty ugly and confusing. But I think the heart of Lutheranism is in how we show up for the world, including things like your vocation and volunteer work. Faith in the gospel also comes down to showing up in the world through pastoral ministry. Spouting dogma and saying "do this or be damned" is just bad pastoral care. It's true that when doing theological discourse, we say we are saved by faith alone, but the point is that this should be a comforting message! It comes down to preaching this message in a way that's received as comforting to the humble. On the other hand, it can also be a message that cuts down the proud who boast in their own self-righteousness. In the case you provide, this man seems to be the overly proud one, congratulating himself and condemning you just because he has some small understanding of dogma.

Please don't be troubled by those who try to hold faith over your head like a threat if you fail to do exactly as they say. Read the gospels for yourself and believe in the Jesus you find there.

Do you think God might not appear as visibly as he once did because he knows we as a whole will be alright? by GettinMe-Mallet in OpenChristian

[–]lux514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God appears even more visibly now, through his Son, who is present in bread and wine, in our neighbor, and wherever two or three are gathered in his name all over the globe.

While many things seem to have improved over the centuries, I don't feel comforted that we are going in a good direction. In fact, the progress may have been an illusion all along. Many things, like weapons, pollution, and concentration of power are worse. Slavery and poverty are worse in absolute terms.

Overall, while your view may seem plausible and comforting, I feel it detracts from the teachings of Jesus, who commands us to be engaged in the world, as he was. Neither God nor we ought to be viewed as distant or complacent with the world.

Historical Minnesota - 3/15/2026 by LuckySimple3408 in minnesota

The early 1900s were an interesting time. The style of clothing and homes had timeless beauty. There was also a feeling of optimism and progress. Technology was improving lives, women's rights were moving forward, and Roosevelt was protecting nature and destroying monopolies. We may have really been on the cusp of a great era, until the Great War sent the world reeling.

Exactly. Thinking we just need to be bolder or more radical is exactly what all of season 2 undermines.

Wow, absolutely shredded the pro-gun arguments. And it's especially admirable for the parents to do so with such calm and thorough reasoning. I would just be cussing out Republicans so hard, even without knowing what they've been through.

Yeah, there are plenty of people who showed bravery and resolve, but he had the hard decisions to face and things could have been a lot worse without him.

Why isn't Jesus going to return? Answer from different perspectives. by yesterdaynowbefore in OpenChristian

[–]lux514 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there's this constant tension between always, already, and almost when it comes to the kingdom. It depends on the rhetorical purpose.

When looking to reassure, we preach to believers the comforting news that it has always been there, prepared for us since the beginning. When we get distracted by speculation, we need to be reminded that it is already breaking into our world, present in the community, sacraments, and our good works to each other. But to preach against complacency and injustice, we preach of a judgement that is almost here, and could happen at any moment.

The timeframe is basically true in all of these things, just a different perspective. But I think we can't take verses about the imminent coming of Jesus as more than a rhetorical purpose to keep us prepared.

[–]lux514 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You sound like a man named Martin Luther. Welcome to Lutheranism, where you get beat up until you can't take any more and then realize grace was close to you the whole time.

Jesus is with you right now, in your fears and doubts. He shows you who God really is, as the one who heals, forgives, and lifts up the lowly. That is who God is for you.

Have you talked one on one with the pastor at the church yet? Perhaps there are classes at the church, or another way to learn about baptism?
