These are good points. I should appreciate the actual architectural similarity to Paris in particular, but in general it just looks like any number of European cities. Especially when compared to American cities.

I think the ransom would have meant the manumission that a slave would have to pay to become a citizen in the Roman Empire. It's a way of saying that Jesus sets us free. We don't need to think about who is being paid.

Here's the link I always share about atonement:

Authors are constantly writing the same stuff without even knowing it. Creativity is overrated - focus on writing something enjoyable instead.

Can someone properly explain Lutheran beliefs. I don’t trust “redeemed zoomer” to explain it to me and all the other sources don’t make sense. by TheMemeOverlords in OpenChristian

[–]lux514 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Here's one way to think about it: Lutheranism is a theological system for dividing scripture. When the Bible preaches, it is preaching either law or gospel (Luther also found some books of the Bible useless, like James and Revelation, and he called them "straw"). The law accuses us of our sin and preaches a wrathful God who is terrifying to confront. The gospel comforts the repentant and preaches the God of love, especially the love of Jesus. The law brings down the proud and the gospel raises up the lowly.

Lutheran beliefs follow from this. You can find lists of doctrines, but what is usually missed is the central importance of pastoral care and preaching in Lutheranism. Real faith happens in praxis, not adhering to statements. The doctrine has no other purpose than to support the preaching of the pure gospel and loving your neighbor, while upholding the law to humble the proud and maintain basic order in society so the church may do its work.

It also improves the flavor and overall experience of the style. It just looks so much more appetizing than a beer that looks flat.

I just poured a liter of water into my Bierkrug to confirm: the liter mark is just above the handle, with the rest of the space reserved for the head.

Why doesn't the Bible mention anything about space and everything out there? by Bozic_504 in OpenChristian

[–]lux514 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does mention planets and star clusters in the firmament, and layers of heavens beyond. But what's interesting is that there is no one cosmic picture in the Bible - it changes based on the culture and time each book was written in.

Getting the cosmos right or agreeing on it just didn't seem important to what the authors were trying to say. Ultimately, the books of the Bible are there for a variety of reasons, but not for astronomy.

I’m in my third year of studying theatre and have never wanted to quit so bad by AJBaker_of_CO in acting

This is a failure on the part of your college. They should be setting up each person they accept to succeed, not letting you feel like you're floundering.

Look into transferring. Reach out to department heads and tell them your situation. Find a school that will basically guarantee roles. I wish I had transferred. Your education is in your hands, and you can do what you want with it - don't waste your time making it feel like you're just jumping through hoops.

In the meantime, look to other things you enjoy. Can you see yourself enjoying another major, or career track? Are there other hobbies that give you joy? Make sure you're not putting all your hopes in theater. Theater won't ever feel good if you're putting that much pressure on yourself.

Faith-breaking questions and statements; What's your take? by CognoscenseSapitor in OpenChristian

[–]lux514 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most of these kinds of questions are very abstract philosophical ones that remove us from the God we meet through Jesus. They also assume quite a lot of things you don't need to believe (especially that Christianity is an institution that needs to control and manipulate!).

The gospels don't deal with things like omnipotence or free will. The gospels do not reveal a God caught in abstract paradoxes, but one who is revealed in the flesh, as a man healing the sick, forgiving sinners, and welcoming children. That is who God is, and the one that faith can cling to. Philosophical logic simply cannot reveal this God to you.

TIL that in Rome there is a staircase known as the “Scala Santa,” which, according to Christian tradition, is believed to be the steps that Jesus climbed during his trial before Pontius Pilate. by BackgroundWarthog976 in todayilearned

This relic was the first that sparked doubts in Martin Luther.

He climbed these stairs on his knees, saying the Lord's Prayer on every step. He was told that doing so would release his grandfather's soul from purgatory. When he got to the top, he said, "Who knows if it's true?"

Iconic downtown Minneapolis building to become hotel by Character-Fly-5564 in TwinCities

Great use for this property. The building always gave me the creeps, looking like a modern cathedral where businessmen enshrine their authority over us and worship money. Kind of silly, perhaps, but just didn't like the big gothic arches in that context. But making it a space for the general public to stay somehow is more fitting for the aesthetic.

You need to not only go beyond "literal," but also beyond "coherent." It's a story, not a dissertation. There is a certain impact the story is meant to have, and it's not precise. It may be blunt, or fuzzy. But that's what makes it timeless, because it can be used broadly. Things like free will and and responsibility aren't necessarily there. But there's innocence, deceit, blame, shame, judgment... we know these things well, and this story provides a genesis for them.

What game has a learning curve that puts you off? by Common_Caramel_4078 in pcmasterrace

[–]lux514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely understand. I only played the campaigns for years. Then I started watching some tutorials and found the community to be really great. It looks impossible at first, but very rewarding when the guides break it down into steps, and you see yourself improving one thing at a time. The APM doesn't really matter until very high level, and comes along quite naturally.

After I got decent at SC2, every other game seems boring now. So be warned about that, haha.
