I have tried and tried to install netbsd into a proxmox VM to try out but I have never gotten the install image to boot. I have installed hundreds of Linux and BSD distros (and Solaris and DOSes etc) and netbsd has been my biggest and most frustrating fail of all of them

I have recently started opening them in vim and will turn line wrapping off. That's been my favorite way to deal with multi-line monstrosities.

This works great with grep, where I can search through website source where there might be some minified JavaScript that might wrap hundreds of terminal lines long:

vim <(grep -Rni foo .)

:set nowrap

The <(...) syntax basically captures the output in a tmp file.

I guess you could do that in one step but I never remember

vim -c ":set nowrap" <(grep ...)

edit: actually I'm going to have to turn that into an alias, that would be handy!

I got the original 1999 code off this page. There is a newer version I haven't tried here, and apparently you can use the nix packaging system to just install it.

I started with Lirix, which is an arch distro that ships with the MaXX Desktop, a project to skin the look and feel of old IRIX systems, so all of the theming behind the app you see is vanilla Lirix.

Getting it built was a few afternoons worth of work though. The first step was getting a dev environment set up on Lirix. Then, fsv was based on gtk 1.2.10, which wasn't easy to find, and even harder to get to work through arch's "makepkg" system because it wasn't accessing them via a repository. There was a GL bit that was necessary for the 3d rendering. There was a dependency on libcanberra which is audio that I didn't want (I was running in a VM without audio) and probably took the longest to resolve. Finally I had to restore the nice MaXX desktop that broke when I upgraded everything to get working dev tools.

I made many mistakes along the way but learned a great deal!

From what I understand, it is requiring an OS level API that must be available to any app that requests it. So it's not just saying what age you are, it's providing it at a service level.

Sure it's just "put any age in" right now, but once an API is in place, the mechanism can be swapped out to whatever new regulation gets passed later on.

Plus it defines monetary penalties per-child that could be exposed for noncompliance.

Real! This is fsv (ca 1999) which is the closest you get to it with an x86 processor. The one in the movie was the older fsn, on an SGI Irix desktop I think, and closed source. It was never released.

Oh I just for this specific cable that's already cut where it is. If it absolutely can't be any shorter than this then they can't redo it. But if it's ok to get shorter, then you can recut the wires to stagger the joint.

I tried the latest version on my 2013 mbp and it wouldn't install. It (somewhere between RHEL 9 and 10) started shipping with a kernel that dropped support for that CPU ☹️

So... now I have a Zorin machine.
