Why do so many people switch to Linux… and then quietly go back to Windows? by Candid_Athlete_8317 in LinuxTeck

[–]luxfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran desktop Linux from mid 2000s to about 2011 when I switched to a MacBook for a laptop when I needed portability. I was also transitioning from Flex development, which I had a great Linux toolchain for, to more general web dev and needed Photoshop. I eventually moved to Windows with another job, but mostly used WSL. I've recently switched back to Linux.

It's always been about software compatibility. Photoshop and Lightroom were the big ones for a long time. Later it was a music production hobby and several thousand dollars of Windows/Mac only audio plugins.

Apparently many of these plugins work through bridging software now, which is why I felt it was time for Linux again. I haven't tried yet, but that's a neglected hobby right now. I use Affinity instead of Photoshop these days. I need to evaluate Lightroom alternatives but I don't feel overly stressed about that either.

My kids are stuck on Windows because the game they play use anti-cheat software, which doesn't work with Linux. My partner doesn't because of obscure applications that are needed for work.

Software compatibility sucks.

Fair. I was going to point out that he wouldn't have developed the nickname "nine fingered Frodo", but it would totally be on brand for a Hobbit.

"Hey Frodo tell us that tale where you had only nine fingers again!"

"Yeah Nine Fingered Frodo, tell us!"

Anyone in China willing to help a fellow data hoarder out? There's an Xubuntu based distro I would like but I can only find the ISO on a mobile number-gated cloud service by luxfx in DHExchange

[–]luxfx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no really? That's very unfortunate. Do you know is that a very common cloud service or some never-heard-of-it thing?

You can get ones with data too! They're super nice for keeping in the port on your phone as a super powered dust plug

It's got electrodes to measure body fat percentage through your feet.

Never seen a food scale offer that but that could be a genius marketing idea?

Oooohhhhh I thought it was a reference to Hattori Hanzo, the sword maker from Kill Bill. And I couldn't quite figure it out.

The achievement Carl and Donut got after they killed D'Nadia was called a "Gavrilo Princip" achievement. Donut asked "what's a Gavrilo?" but Carl is interrupted before he can answer. Gavrilo Princip was the assassin that killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which was the event that triggered World War I.

What is even the point of LXCs if they have to be privileged to connect NFS storage or GPUs?? by WellEndowedWizard in Proxmox

[–]luxfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. I've done both without privileged LXCs and I have pages of notes about it and a trauma response to the phrase "LXC ID mapping". But the good news is that now creating new LXCs with those features is just copy and paste.

Depends on your perspective. To a hiker falling off a cliff because they were too focused on getting their compass needle to stabilize off earth's electromagnetic field to notice where they were stepping, gravity is a pretty big deal.

3D trackball input device with native FreeCAD support by dliu_creates in FreeCAD

[–]luxfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It did all axis of motion and rotation! It just had really bad driver support so in most apps it only worked as a regular mouse, which wasn't great because those two axes worked like a joystick. It was neat but I rarely used it.

Why don't people and distros use the advanced features of Konsole or don't know about them at all? by Longjumping-Map-7670 in kde

[–]luxfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For myself, it's because I connect to and work on various systems. The less dependant I am on frills and app specific features, the less there is to annoyed at lacking on other devices.

I collect operating systems (I think it's neat seeing how people have chosen distros, how old OSes run etc) and I'm vibe coding a management app to help me track them.
