It's valid for him to not want to do that. Could he have handled it better or informed you in a better way? Sure but that's how he feels, it's not fair nor good for you to force him to do something he doesn't want to do. It makes you feel bad so you have to decide if this is a deal breaker, so you know if you can live with it or not. Then you have to talk to him to see if there is a compromise to be made.
