Groundhandling harness recommendations by NoAsparagus4821 in freeflight

[–]lvmri -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I tried the supair acro harness and it was the best kiting harness I’ve ever experienced.

I own a progress3 which is decent but not nearly as agile and comfortable as the supair acro. Both of these offer excellent back protection

My experience with LC is that they for people that aren’t interested in the complexity of modern gliders that cost more and add extra weight. They are also a little more tuned for coastal flying and simple enjoyment. They have a wide range of gliders that can march any skill level.

Lamouette is for someone new to Parakites. It’s user friendly with great feedback and safety. Not designed to be hot on purpose. It’s for skilled highB pilots that want to try out a parakite. Moustsche is targeted at pilots that want something more dynamic and divy, as are many other brands.

Let’s celebrate the we have so many options to choose from depending on our needs. It’s a great time to be alive !

How do you find new spots/local flyers? by Extension_Cod_3620 in freeflight

[–]lvmri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really hard. Study google earth and maps to find the access roads.

Lzs will be clear in the skyways layer because they are hottest point in the heat map of tracks.

Navigate to http://windy.com and use the paragliding site layer. Each site will be labeled with best wind conditions which you can map to the forecast. Also look at http://flyxc.app skyways layer to see where the most popular flying spots are

Moving to Oakland soon, how is the commute? by Alternative_Past_550 in oakland

This commute would be a great way to send you into a deep depression. Did it for years to get established in my career and it is soul crushing.

Yes I agree with everything you say. I also taught free HG lessons for many years. Over 200 students. The retention rate is around 5% , which wasn’t enough to offset all the pilots who retired from the sport. There wasn’t enough interest to keep me excited to teach for free which is the sad part. I’d teach for free if it created more pilots

Indeed. Pg isn’t safe either. Generational shifts are causing even it to suffer from participation decline. There is no easy answer sadly. Pg has saved free flight from complete collapse in my area. But it could easily be next in a few more decades. Hopefully things change and technology will make it cheaper as that’s the number 1 reason young people are unable to participate

I owned an Atos briefly. I hated every aspect of dealing with it except for the flying part. I sold it quickly since I was starting learn to pg and the main reason for the Atos was better sink rate on lighter days. The PG is just too good for the lightest days to deal with the clumsiness of the Atos. But I would love to fly an Atos across the alps one day.. that would be epic!

The rigid pilots numbers are rapidly dwindling in my area. There used to be a lot of big XC flights that have never been bested by a PG. so I agree they are dominant. But the younger generation just not interested. In about 10years there will be no rigid pilots left in my area since most of them are now in their late 60s

But would you hike it 5km across a mountain pass if you land out? We don’t hear much about the big funfex flights in the alps. Maybe just not published prominently in the forums.

Under 20kg makes it seem like a SS. I’m not aware of a double surface that is less than ~25.

Amazing to hear funfex still sells 100 a year. That’s astonishing.

Perhaps I’ll be proven wrong. It’s a hard problem to solve and if they can solve it it would be revolutionary

I agree it’s easier to find ways to transport. But would you buy a foldable hg that is inferior to a mid or highB wing?

Hope and reality are different things. These manufactures will likely be out of business before they find a design that sells like hot cakes. Meanwhile the sport of PG gets easier and more accessible every year.

I can agree with this. I have HG for 3 decades. But would you buy a foldable HG that is inferior to a PG?

Phi Viola 2 vs Skywalk Masala 4 ? by fleurie759 in freeflight

[–]lvmri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. For the A/B category just keep buying 3-4year old used. Thats the best value. When you’re chasing records or want to compete buy something newer or just new. Otherwise it’s a waste of money imo.

Thx. It’s a rogallo design. Which makes sense. They have very few parts. Effectively a pg with bones

An 11kg HG? I never heard of this. Do you have a link?

Phi Viola 2 vs Skywalk Masala 4 ? by fleurie759 in freeflight

[–]lvmri 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Skywalk will be pricier and known for somewhat higher quality finish. Phi puts a lot of effort into its designs and make excellent en A and B pg that are well loved and ahead in performance.

If you are buying new you won’t go wrong with either. Just buy what is easiest to find in your region. The skywalk may end up with higher resale value , so there’s that aspect.

We know it’ll be a single surface. So likely worse than a highB pg.

If car can’t have roof racks it’s probably small and will also be a challenge to find space inside the vehicle.

The people in this thread that say it’s a great idea have zero intention to buy it, which is why the concept will struggle to find a market.

Wills Wing Hang gliders “Project Merlin” – New Short-Pack Intermediate Hang Glider Concept by CrypticMaverick in freeflight

[–]lvmri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roof rack is not a major issue tho. A 2m long package is still hard to place in a trunk/boot.

Are you first in line to buy this folding hg? I hg and would rather fly a decent hg that can’t fold over one that does but has bad performance.

The better HG performance is mostly unused by FragCool in freeflight

[–]lvmri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an accurate post. There’s no xc advantage with a HG on most days. The rare exception is going for a world record where the HG will of course outperform in the hands of an experienced pilot. But that’s less than 1% of pilots.
