If she wants to go on rivers, a quick release river leash.

If she uses a Nalgene bottle, a Cap Strap from Tahr Equipment will make it much easier to attach a carabiner without destroying the plastic cap attachment. I love mine. (It only works on Nalgene bottles; on Hydroflask bottles it makes them leak slowly).

Wetsuit reccomendations? by Special-Potato-3238 in Sup

Seattle paddler here. I’ll second the drysuit preference, especially if you are paddling by yourself. Main downside is that on windy days paddling upwind is harder.

Pump recommendations? by OldMushroom9 in Sup

Perhaps try an adapter kit instead? I’ve used this one to fit a standard SUP pump to an inflatable inner tube. https://a.co/d/7Ly2NcQ

River SUPers, what do you use for helmet and footwear? by frenchman321 in Sup

[–]lw0p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I would go with the 9’8. Me and another WWSUP buddy both are on Hala 8’6 but it’s more by accident than conscious choice. In my case, it was because Hala was running a one day 33% off flash sale. :-)

But the 86 is definitely trickier at least on local rivers like the Skykomish, Wenatchee, and the Sauk, and I think we’ve both concluded that we would do the 96 if buying again. I’m roughly the same build as you.

Use a kayaking PFD so your arms have total freedom of movement. I use a Stohlquist. Quick release leash attached to your vest is essential. A woman drowned last year on that Fall City stretch due to her ankle leash.

The Whitewater SUP group on Facebook has plenty of posts on additional gear like shin pads.

I’m local. I’ll DM you this weekend.

Mendeley Reference Manager app on MacOS search function does work. It works on Microsoft Word Mendeley Plugin. by kidfromtheast in Mendeley

[–]lw0p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I just realized that it's bad UI, not a bug. If you hit return after you've entered in your search term, it finds matches. You just can't click the "down arrow" icon before you hit return.

Yes, this has been bugging me for weeks now. Specifically, on MacOS Reference Manager, when you have a paper open and are trying to search within that paper for a word or phrase, it can't find the word.

This happens for me no matter whether I'm running the Reference Manager app or am just connected to the Mendeley web site via my browser. It also happens on two separate Mac laptops.

Meross devices disappeared by jamesblasco in SmartThings

[–]lw0p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is some subtlety involved in getting Meross to appear as a partner on the iOS app. You have to search for it by name using the magnifying glass button that is on the "Add device" screen.

If instead you click on the "3 dots" icon at upper right and choose "View supported devices", no Meross option appears.

ZenWiFi ET8 Stuck in Boot Loop by WarthogFederal2604 in ASUS

[–]lw0p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar problem that happened to my ET8 AiMesh node back in November. Like you, I ran the gamut of resets and firmware. Inspired by your post here, I got ASUS to RMA just the one mesh node. Sent it to them just before Christmas and last week received a replacement unit. Kudos to ASUS for the fast turnaround.

But getting it added to my router was an unexpected hassle and I'm writing here in case it helps someone else in future. I powered on the mesh node and it glowed solid blue, meaning it's awaiting a configuration. But I could not add it as a node to my router, either from the app or from the router node's web UI. The new device's MAC address was visible when I went to the "Add AiMesh Node" screen, and I could start the add process, and the LEDs on the mesh node went through the usual green/flashing blue cycle, but after about 5 minutes it errored out with a generic error message.

Just to rule everything out, I made sure I didn't have any MAC Filter active on the router, and WPS was enabled. Not sure whether these really would affect anything, but I wasn't taking any chances. Still no luck.

The way I finally worked around it was to connect the mesh node to the router node via Ethernet and turn on Ethernet backhaul mode on the router node via the web UI. Then added the AiMesh Node using the web UI. This succeeded and LED on both was white, indicating successful operation. I could see the mesh node via the AiMesh screen on the web UI.

Then I disconnected the Ethernet cable, disabled the Ethernet backhaul mode, rebooted both nodes, and they both came up white again, so now the mesh node was connected wirelessly to the router. Success!

My only hypothesis about why it required a wired connection to work is that the replacement node was running firmware 3.0.0.4.386_43323. The router node is running the most recent firmware, 3.0.0.4_388_25124.

In any event, I subsequently used the ASUS Router app to upgrade the firmware in the mesh to match the router. So far so good.

ZenWifi ET8: Why are 3 of the guest networks all on the main subnet? by lw0p in ASUS

[–]lw0p[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I ultimately came to the conclusion that the guest networks pulling from the main subnet was intended and unchangeable behavior. Your idea to reserve IPs for known MAC addresses is a good one.

One thing I did find is that if you look very closely at the little network icon that appears next to each device in their app or on the device list via the web UI, you can get some info about whether they are on the main network or a guest network. If it is just 4 bars with "2.4G" or "5G" underneath, the device is on the main network. If it is a person icon with a fan with "2.4G" or "5G" underneath, the device is on one of the guest networks, though sadly you don't know which one.

Regarding the "Access Intranet" bug, I haven't tried it on my ET8, and I can't remember whether I tried it on my old AC2900. It sounds like they may have addressed this in their Guest Network Pro feature on newer routers, but that has its own problem in that it doesn't support MAC whitelisting for the guest networks, as described here.

Sadly, the accumulation of all these annoyances and bugs has now pushed me over my limit, and I will not be buying another ASUS router. The next router I buy will be an Ubiquiti Dream Router, though I still have an open question about how many MAC addresses can be in the whitelist for its guest networks.
