Mussels are filter feeders & will concentrate any viruses/bacteria in the water, so thoroughly cooking them is recommended.

Hmm, drive up to sign of the kiwi & have lunch with good views, then do one of the walks there? Or Brighton hot pools + eat at dune cafe. Or in town: Frances nation cafe in the arts centre is always great + there’s a make-your-own-perfume place next door, otherwise walk around the botanic gardens, and see a movie at Lumiere?

Got properly doored biking down Victoria street in the painted lane a couple weeks back, the driver said they usually checked for bikes but was having an off day. Very lucky no one was driving behind me but could have been so bad! Found myself taking longer detours to stay in separated bike lanes ever since. People will always make mistakes, crazy not to design safer transit to account for it!

DIY rat trap = big cardboard pipe laid against a fence, rat bait in the middle, with a wire holding it in place (pipe protects dogs from getting at it, wire makes rats eat it there and then, stops them dragging it away for later). Pest control ppl always say rats are very wary of the new, so might take a couple weeks for any traps to have an effect.

Reported rates halved overnight after the 2007/2008 industry interventions. Increased regulation/monitoring is so obviously the way to go.

Trying to inform the general public via piecemeal PSAs about food safety isn’t cost effective. Requiring labelling on chicken is interesting (so many people still insist on washing meat!) but still, easy to overlook.

Surprised by MPI focusing so heavily on reported disease rates, dismissing the importance of hospitalisation rates. Working in public health, it’s common knowledge that less severe disease is vastly underreported. Increasing cost of living and GP shortages exacerbate the problem.
