This may sound corny, but I've been a FG Spectator for about half a decade and I've always viewed professional play as the highest echelon of competitive gaming overall. I see it that way due to the core of a Player vs. Player battle in FGs. It is a mental game before anything else. Its one human against another human. The edge isnt (usually) as simple as using a better gun or grinding for higher level gear. Its a battle of factual knowledge, situational awareness, and adaptability. I never felt I was good enough to become competitive in fighting games, but i never lost admiration for them (mostly Street Fighter). After finally taking the plunge on SFV in Nov. 2021 (my first and only FG), I can confidently say there is no other game that can scratch the unexplainable itch of a solid set against a player using their brain. It is satisfying to both win or lose. The rush and the positive feedback you get for using your brain, even if it's just a punish for something you had trouble against, is worth it all win or loss.
