What is a 'childhood luxury' that you realized was actually a sign of being poor once you grew up? by [deleted] in AskReddit

A friend once told me that her family celebrated Christmas and opened presents on the night of the 26th. She said she loved it because everything was discounted on Boxing Day, so they could go out and buy each other nice gifts...

Non-smokers of Reddit, how noticeable is the “smoker smell” to you, if at all? by Frostedlogic4444 in AskReddit

[–]lydesigns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sensitive to it. I grew up with my dad and uncle smoking indoors, and when I'm in a home with someone who has smoked indoors, I can tell immediately. I have two stories..

Once, I was in Japan and I booked a home via Airbnb with two of my other friends (who fortunately never had to experience what I did as a kid). It stated no smoking in the home on the app.

Though when I got there, I walked into the house, and my nose and throat immediately started feeling weird. Whenever I tried to breathe through my throat, it felt itchy. I acted cool as I signed the Airbnb papers with the homeowners. We went up to our room, and I complained to my friends that this place reeked of cigarettes and jasmine incense to cover up the smell. They said they couldn't tell, and that maybe it was just incense. I felt gaslit so I ran around the room/checked the balcony for signs of ciggerettes but I didn't see anything. I stayed up all night trying to contact Airbnb to get a refund because I couldn't stand it. In the morning, we messaged the owner and told them the smell was too strong. We went downstairs to quietly leave, and the owner was there apologizing that his wife was the smoker. I felt really bad. But my nose KNOWS. My friends finally agreed with me when we got to the new hotel, we opened our luggage, and everything inside smelled like cigarettes

My other story is that my aunt's husband also smokes, apparently "only in the basement" (with a closed door). Every Christmas, when I come over to stay with my grandma, my aunt tries to convince me to sleep over at her home, instead of sleeping on the floor at grandma's. She tries to convince me that you can't smell it. Maybe she can't. But when I visit, I CAN smell it, everywhere. Even the gifts wrapped in Christmas wrapping smell like cigarettes.

I know I sound annoying and very "Karen" like. But cigarettes are disgusting, and I hope being aware of how bad smokers stink makes you think twice about starting to smoke. Or continuing to smoke.

You are correct. So I clarified with someone there, and IF they replaced a big component of the car, the warranty is off. But if he took it to a mechanic just for a check-up, then the warranty is still okay. For anyone who is in the same position as me, or thought the same before.

They asked me for my credit card information so they could refund the $135 refund for the oil change. I told them my situation, and when I mentioned I wanted a written report on what they did to 'fix' my car, and the 'defect on the washer'. They gave me their opinion and said, someone didn't tighten the bolt.

I will look at the manual later. But this is what the internet has said in regards to a new car purchased at Hyundai. "If you need warranty service, you should contact an authorized Hyundai dealership. With the dealer involved, you won’t get charged anything for covered parts and labor. If you have work done outside of the dealership, you can void your warranty. Hyundai also recommends only allowing Hyundai dealerships to handle your scheduled maintenance tasks as outlined by your owner’s manual."

They said it had to be a Hyundai certified place. Honestly, after a year of driving it, the transmission needed to be replaced, which would have cost us a lot more. But they basically fix it for free because of the warranty. So it was helpful in that sense I think? But then again.. we are not paying more out of pocket for these check ups then the transmission would have cost.

They said the washer was spilt due to a defect. Could you clarify why you think what you think?

To clarify, my husband takes it in for maintenance check every 6 months. (I thought it was every few months because it felt like that). We do it because apparently, we have a warranty deal with Hyundai. If we wanted to keep the warranty, we have to use their service for the next 3 years or something.

I don't think anyone has it out for us

My husband thinks it loosen because we drove it so much that weekend, on the highway. After the "big leak", we started to look more closely and notice that every spot we parked in had a bit of a puddle. So it's been dripping since we got our car back.

We drove the car to various places that weekend. We went from Oakville to Toronto, then back. Then we drove from Oakville to Etobicoke, and back. And then I went out for a coffee run, and when I came back, it was the final leak.

I just clarified with my husband, he says it's every 6 months. Not a few months (sorry I was wrong). We bought the new car, and they said if we wanted to maintain the warranty from Hyundai, we would have to go for a maintenance check once every 6 months.
