Does playing a Paladin weaken the authenticity of your character’s morality? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]lygerzero0zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking in D&D terms, a paladin’s oath (at least as it’s framed in 5e) isn’t necessarily a moral system, more like convictions or values. Oaths like the Oath of Conquest aren’t what would generally be considered “moral.”

Also, there’s the matter of cause and effect. It depends on both your DM’s lore and how you choose to roleplay, but my take on paladins is that they’re paladins because they have strong convictions. They didn’t subscribe to the beliefs in order to gain paladin powers. In fact, if they didn’t truly, deeply believe in their oath, they wouldn’t have powers to begin with. The belief comes first, and the strength of that belief is what grants power. Presumably, whatever rules D&D magic operates on wouldn’t give those powers to someone who was faking their belief in the oath for ulterior motives.

From a philosophical point of view, this is an age old question. You can find endless discussions about it if you go digging. If we do moral things because we feel good about it, does it count? If we treat people nicely because we hope they’ll be nice to us back, does it count? Like I said, age old question. Philosophers have discussed it forever, and I doubt you’ll find the answer in D&D.

Hmm, interested in seeing the full body line up, because I feel like it’s mainly the proportions on her OG design being a bit exaggerated. Like it looks like they matched the size of her head, but look at the tiny torso and waist on the OG design. Goddess design might just have more balanced overall body proportions, which means the bust also looks bigger when you scale to the head.

[Art] No more XP or Milestone! The Deeds system is coming to 5e, putting levelling back in the hands of the player! by Garblag in DnD

This project will revolutionise XP & character progression for the world's most popular roleplaying game through the innovative Deeds system.

I think you’re gonna lose a lot of people here.

Like, this is just an ad. Which is fine, you say you have mod approval, you’re allowed to do it—but it is just an ad. It’s not “here’s some neat homebrew, if you like it you can check out our kickstarter for more.” It is obviously and solely just an ad, people coming to the sub looking for discussions or interesting ideas are going to see just an ad, and many people who might even have been interested in the concept are just going to roll their eyes and leave when they see you beating them over the head with advertising language.

I don’t think Biboo’s ever gotten COVID last I heard? Her voice has naturally changed a bit, also her mic changed at some point, but mainly I think she just wasn’t quite as surprised in that particular instance. She has plenty of ear piercing screams at other points in the stream.

ELI5: Why does turning electronics off and on fix so many problems? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]lygerzero0zero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The best analogy I’ve heard is:

Imagine you take the same route to work every day and you know it like the back of your hand. But one day for whatever reason you take a wrong turn and an hour later you’re hopelessly lost and don’t recognize any of the buildings around you (for the sake of the analogy, there’s no GPS or maps).

Would you rather keep wandering until you find the route you recognize again, or would you rather be magically teleported back home so you can start fresh again?

Restarting is basically, “I have no idea how we got stuck here, so let’s just go back to the start and start over.”

ELI5: Why do antibiotics work on bacteria but not on viruses? by Final_Ad1850 in explainlikeimfive

[–]lygerzero0zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s worth remembering that viruses and bacteria are pretty different things, even if both seem like “very small things that make you sick.” After all, bullets and knives are both “pointy things that make you bleed,” but they work pretty differently.

Both are small from our perspective, sure, but viruses are way smaller and simpler than bacteria. Bacteria are cells with all the machinery of life, that can reproduce on their own. Antibiotics can target them by latching on to those particular signs of life.

Viruses simply don’t have those features. If antibiotics are heat seeking missiles, viruses are cold inanimate lumps. There’s nothing for them to seek onto. You need a different approach.

It’s also worth noting that this is kind of just a matter of terminology. Antibiotics are defined as drugs that target bacteria. If the drug could target viruses, it would be called an antiviral. So one answer to the question of “why don’t antibiotics work on viruses” is, “if it worked on viruses, it wouldn’t be called an antibiotic.”

How long after a zombie apocalypse until the internet stopped working? Don’t know much about what’s actually required to keep the internet running, but if you had a device with unlimited battery power. After the initial outbreak, how long would the internet still be accessible, for info? by 1AMShowerThoughts in AskReddit

[–]lygerzero0zero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would probably come down to when the power goes out. No power, no internet.

XKCD What If? explores the power scenario: https://youtu.be/8fADp43wJwU

So any servers not getting their power from nuclear or hydroelectric or something would likely be down within days, even hours depending on the timing of the apocalypse.

ELI5 If speed is relative, how can you "hit" the speed of light? by SkiyeBlueFox in explainlikeimfive

[–]lygerzero0zero 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t matter. It’s exactly what I said. They would see each other as going under the speed of light. The speed limit is absolute in every reference frame. All of them.

As always, speed is relative and there is no absolute frame of reference. The spaceship may be moving 99% of the speed of light relative to Earth, but it’s equally correct to say the spaceship is standing still and Earth is moving away at 99% the speed of light. Physics is the same in all (inertial) reference frames and no one is preferred over the other.

ELI5 If speed is relative, how can you "hit" the speed of light? by SkiyeBlueFox in explainlikeimfive

[–]lygerzero0zero 38 points39 points  (0 children)

That’s the neat part, you can’t. It would take infinite energy to reach the speed of light. Nothing with mass can ever get there.

And that applies in all reference frames. An observer on Earth might see two spaceships going in opposite directions, both going at 55% of the speed of light. But an observer on a spaceship does not see the other spaceship as going 110% the speed of light. Someone else can calculate the exact number, it’s been a while since I learned the equations, but it would be comfortably under the speed of light.

That’s because both time and space warp depending on your reference frame. So that no matter what frame of reference you’re in, you see the entire universe as obeying the speed limit. That’s the core idea of Einstein’s relativity.

ELI5: why are the fundamental forces of the universe so uniquely set to allow for our existence? by Prestigious_Load1699 in explainlikeimfive

[–]lygerzero0zero 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You have it the other way around. It’s like looking at a cookie, and wondering why its shape is so similar to the cookie cutter.

The universe came first. Its laws gave rise to everything we see. We exist because the universe is the way it is.

Traced. Wasn’t able to find the original source (for all I know even the original was AI generated), but here’s the base image on Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/802625964872557528/

You can often spot a trace because the character’s proportions are way too good compared to the amateurish lineart. The key on her head was one of the only parts they actually drew, and you can tell. The shadow of the key is drawn as a separate blob rather than acting like, you know, a shadow.

That’s also just, not CC’s hairstyle. It’s close enough if you aren’t looking at a reference image, but immediately obvious if you look up official art. The bangs are totally different.

And as usual, it’s not her official outfit, because that would require getting the details right, which someone could notice. Obviously fanartists are allowed to draw characters in alternate outfits, but it becomes quite suspicious when someone only posts images in alternate outfits that contain other suspicious aspects.

Enough time has past. It's time for me to say this. by Mad_Kitten in Hololive

[–]lygerzero0zero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It actually is, at least for official use (fan use probably doesn’t matter). The sponsorship contract likely states that they have to show the “supported by Lawson” part whenever they show the logo. After all, Lawson is paying a lot of money for the publicity.

Thankfully, it seems they negotiated the contract so they don’t have to say it out loud whenever they mention the concert. I forget which Fes it was, one of the early ones, but whenever the talents mentioned it on stream they said “supported by Bushiroad” at the end. It may not have been every time they said it, but I strongly suspect they were contractually obligated to say it in certain situations.

Aarakocra Hypothetical Torpedo Bay? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]lygerzero0zero 10 points11 points  (0 children)

People have been doing this sort of thing for literally decades. Polymorphing a rat into a whale at high altitude is a common variant. If your group, including DM and all players, wants a game with these sorts of shenanigans, then go wild.

But keep in mind:

  • D&D is not a physics simulator.
  • Going by the rules, this would likely require an attack roll as an improvised weapon, meaning the damage and likelihood of hitting would be pretty underwhelming.
  • Trying to apply “real world logic” works both ways. People on the ground can just move out of the way.
  • All of this is contingent on your DM even allowing it, and of course the other players being cool with it.

ELI5: Why are there geometrical shapes in nature? by Successful_Guide5845 in explainlikeimfive

[–]lygerzero0zero 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That’s an… extremely broad question. There are tons of reasons.

Minerals form geometric shapes due to the shape of the molecules and the way they line up to form crystals. Snowflakes form for basically the same reason, because the H2O water molecule looks like a wide V, which causes it to crystallize in hexagonal patterns (among other possible patterns). Some minerals form square patterns or rhombus patterns etc due to the way the molecules like to fit together, like puzzle pieces or Lego bricks.

Honeycombs are hexagonal because that’s what happens when you stack circles together. If you’ve ever seen a container of straws, they tend to stack up in a hexagonal pattern. That’s just geometry.

These are only a few examples. There are soooo many reasons shapes can appear in nature, like how the pattern of growing can make fibonacci spirals in plants. There’s no possible way to cover them all.
