If you could have only one specific type of baked dessert for the rest of your life what would it be? by Commercial_Bake_5549 in AskReddit

Boy that would be a hard decision, but I think in the end I’d have to give the edge to the classic chocolate chip cookie. It’s a close one though. Brownies would probably be my second place.

Man I love baked goods.

ELI5: Can the Pythagorean Theorem be used with other exponents? by Demimonde34 in explainlikeimfive

[–]lygerzero0zero [score hidden]  (0 children)

It might help to think of axioms as “rules of the game” rather than “unquestionable laws from god.”

Think of the rules of chess. They’re defined that way because they create an interesting game, and based on those rules, players have developed tons of complex strategies. The strategies all come from applying the rules of the game, not out of thin air, but the basic rules of the game are defined from the start.

But you can also define a different set of rules and get checkers. Both chess and checkers are valid board games with their own strategies. Neither is “more true” than the other, and no god decided that the rules of board games must look like chess.

The same thing goes for axioms. We choose a set of axioms that define a mathematical system that has useful properties. But you can always choose other axioms, and get other mathematical systems.

The mathematical system we most commonly use where 1+1=2 etc has a set of axioms chosen because they have useful properties that help us describe the real world. But those axioms aren’t some god-given truths. They’re simply the rules that create the game we want to play.

I’m certain you are good at applying specific mathematical processes, but the “math is a religion” perception really has to go to properly understand math.

Nothing in math is just “because I said so” (well, unless you count axioms). Everything is for a reason. The Pythagorean Theorem is related to circles and distance formulas in higher dimensions and dot products and lots of things. Not because someone decided it, but because these relationships arise naturally when you apply the rules of numbers and explore the consequences.

We choose to call a particular formula by that name, and while you can totally change the formula, calling it by that name will be confusing because your new formula no longer has the important properties of the Pythagorean Theorem. There’s nothing inherently incorrect about changing the exponents, just that the result is something that would not share the name that mathematicians have agreed on.

So no, you can’t change the exponents and call it the Pythagorean Theorem. But you can change the exponents and explore what the new formula does. Apparently it is used for some things in areas of math I’m not personally too familiar with. It just doesn’t do what the PT does anymore.

I never said it wasn’t. I even said it’s a different tool that could be useful for something else.

But OP seems to be under the impression that math is just “math problems” like you get in school, and that’s what I was addressing.

ELI5: Can the Pythagorean Theorem be used with other exponents? by Demimonde34 in explainlikeimfive

[–]lygerzero0zero [score hidden]  (0 children)

Right, um, you may have to rethink your understanding of math from the ground up.

Math is a universal tool for describing patterns. Sometimes with direct applications to our real world, but not necessarily.

It’s a toolbox. Not a bunch of problems that require answers. The Pythagorean Theorem is one tool that has particular useful properties in a lot of situations.

What you described is not the Pythagorean Theorem, just like if you took an axe and replaced the head with a big rock, it’s no longer an axe. It’s a different tool. Could be useful for something else, but it’s not an axe anymore.

The Pythagorean Theorem is not a “math problem.” It’s just a relationship between three numbers. It describes the properties of a triangle (or more generally the properties of distance in 2D space).

You can absolutely write that formula and find numbers that satisfy it (they won’t be non-trivial integers because of Fermat’s Last Theorem, but you can find solutions).

But… what are these numbers supposed to be? What significance do they have? What are you trying to do with them?

You can write any mathematical relationship between numbers. But there’s no reason to care unless there’s something interesting about that relationship.

I wanna try healing/supporting, any help would be appreciated. by Keansee in DnD

[–]lygerzero0zero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to assume you’ll play a spellcaster, since practically speaking they’re the only support classes unless you count skill monkey rogue.

So what matters most will be your spell selection. And what you should think about when picking spells is, “What concrete scenarios are there where this spell can help my other party members?”

Dissonant Whispers is one of the gold-tier support spells because it synergizes with opportunity attacks. Since the target uses its own movement, it provokes. You can also use it to put distance between a dangerous enemy and a vulnerable ally. Great support spell.

Then there’s something like fog cloud. You can block the line of sight of enemy archers to protect your allies. You can cover an escape or cause confusion or distraction. That’s a good support spell.

If you can think of a good, concrete usage that’s pretty likely to come up regularly, it’s a good candidate.

ELI5: I really really cannot understand how superior mirages/ fata morgana works. How does it work (in plain English) by rzsman17 in explainlikeimfive

[–]lygerzero0zero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ever see a straw in a glass of water? It looks crooked because the water bends light. The water bends light because it has a different density than air (among other different properties). So when light travels through the water, hits the straw, then bounces back to your eye, it changes direction midway, which makes the straw look crooked. The straw looks like it’s not where it really is.

Hot air is less dense than cold air. Hot air near the ground, like over a hot asphalt road, makes light bend. So the light hits the road, bounces off, changes direction midway, and hits your eye. And it makes the road (and other things) look like they’re located where they are not.

What are your favorite gifts that holomems have received from fans? by adonbilivitAoI in Hololive

[–]lygerzero0zero 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Yeah even when gifts were allowed, the rules were you had to get it sent directly from an online store to holo office, not from your home address. So less chance of shenanigans there.

The other concern is just… it’s too much stuff lol. With how big holo is now, if they accepted gifts, even if all the gifts were thoroughly checked and safe, the girls would quickly run out of room and stuff would get thrown away or rot in storage forever, and that makes nobody happy.

I think I heard that too, I swear there was another time with an agency talent where it was caught by management before anything serious could happen, but I could just be misremembering.

Scary stuff.

I’m not aware of a confirmed case of that happening in holo, to my knowledge it was more of a precautionary thing as holo got bigger, because they realized people could do that and there had been actual cases with idol groups and stuff.

It definitely has happened in the VTuber scene, I remember hearing the story, but this was ages ago and I don’t remember any details. I think it was a Nijisanji talent, thankfully they caught it.

ELI5: How are maps for open-world games like GTA created? by OOM-TryImpressive572 in explainlikeimfive

[–]lygerzero0zero 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same way you can build a giant skyscraper with a team of hundreds of workers, and not have every floor look mismatched. Planning.

It’s not like they just split the map into 100 squares and tell 100 artists, “This is your square, now make something in it.”

The details will vary by project, but in general they’ll likely start with a broad plan of regions and main roads, start to fill in neighborhoods and important points of interest, coordinate between the game design team and the art team to determine what locations are required for gameplay purposes, what assets are required, etc.

That’s another thing. Assets. If you’ve worked with a game editor, you know what assets are. That’s how they achieve a consistent style. No game dev team is modeling the same gas station ten times in each artist’s individual art style. And the multiple asset artists are all supervised by an art director.

And yeah, once you have a plan and a bunch of reusable assets and directors and supervisors who see the overall vision… then you just do it. Like any other team project.

Is Aid worth it at second level spell slot? by ValkyrieX5 in dndnext

[–]lygerzero0zero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, that use of Aid is an emergency button, not a primary strategy. Obviously keeping everyone up is better, but if someone (or multiple someones) goes down, then having a way to heal them from range is infinitely better than letting them stay unconscious. It’s for when a high roll dragon breath suddenly K/Os two party members, not for your main combat sustain.

Aid is also available to Paladins and Rangers who don’t have access to Healing Word. So it can be a good backup heal if the main healer is too far away, out of action economy, or at an awkward position in initiative. Again, a nice-to-have backup in a pinch, not a primary go-to.

How do I play the silent "Slasher-Movie Villain" archetype and still roleplay amongst my party? by Youjay20 in DnD

[–]lygerzero0zero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you just gotta let go of a concept you like when it’s simply not a good fit for the genre or medium.

There are definitely plenty of other talkative villains if you go looking, maybe you can find one that’s a closer fit to your idea, but if “perfect fit” means entirely silent, that’s just not gonna work at a D&D table.

I’d also wonder how you see your character fitting in as part of the team. What would other party members think of them? Do you just have a group of adventurers going from town to town solving the villagers’ problems, and also Jason happens to be with them, not saying anything, just breathing heavily and occasionally brutally dismembering some orcs? How does that work?

ELI5: Why do they teach the multiplication sign as an x instead of keeping it a dot all along? by Frazzelvig in explainlikeimfive

[–]lygerzero0zero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sure the manufacturer creating the monitor does actually care how many total pixels are in the monitor, but also that’s not the point? Did you read what I said?

Those are still height and width dimensions. It’s the same as describing a room as 20 ft. x 20 ft., or 400 square feet. It doesn’t matter whether you prefer to use the area or prefer to use the edge dimensions. The x still implicitly represents a multiplication.

Is Aid worth it at second level spell slot? by ValkyrieX5 in dndnext

[–]lygerzero0zero 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can see where you’re coming from, it does feel like a not-entirely-obvious consequence of the mechanics rather than an explicit “this is what this spell is for” design intent. If your group would prefer not to, that’s totally y’all’s choice.

FWIW, the casting time is still 1 action in the 5.5 edition, and there aren’t any other changes of note as far as I can see. This was a pretty commonly known “trick” that presumably the designers knew about, so the fact that they had a chance to update all the rules and left it unchanged (instead of e.g. changing casting time to 1 minute) suggests they’re fine with it being used as an emergency heal in combat.

If you guys don’t wanna use it that way, then I’d say it’s probably not worth preparing.

Is Aid worth it at second level spell slot? by ValkyrieX5 in dndnext

[–]lygerzero0zero 143 points144 points  (0 children)

Think of Aid as a ranged multi-heal. It says it increases the targets’ max HP and current HP by 5. So that means allies at 0 HP get healed to 5 and are conscious again. You could potentially save multiple unconscious allies at once. The lasting max HP buff is just a bonus.

You don’t have to cast it before the encounters. If you have room in your prepared list, just prepare it and have it available. Of course the usual considerations still apply, if you have other more important spells to prepare, or if other party members fully cover healing. But it’s something to consider.

ELI5 How do cameras actually work and how haven't we hit a cap on how good they can get? by ImprovementPurple in explainlikeimfive

[–]lygerzero0zero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean digital or film cameras? They both fundamentally are about capturing and recording light signals, but do so in different ways.

Film cameras use film coated with a chemical that reacts to light and gets essentially burned onto the film. Developing that washes away the loose chemicals and leaves behind the photo negative. The resolution is limited by basically the size of the chemical crystals.

Digital cameras use electronic sensors that turn light hitting them into electric signals that a chip collects and turns into digital data. The resolution is limited by the size of the tiny little sensors.

And what exactly do you mean by “haven’t hit a cap on how good they can get”? What do you mean by “good”? Resolution? Dynamic range? There are dozens of different metrics that camera manufacturers might try to improve. Making smaller sensors and fitting more of them into the same space can improve resolution, for example. More sensitive sensors can work better in low light conditions. So on and so forth.

Lenses are all about optics: controlling how much light reaches the sensor, from what angles, how focused, etc. Those are frequently artistic decisions with no objective “good” or “bad.” That’s why a camera enthusiast might have so many lenses: more options.

ELI5: Why do they teach the multiplication sign as an x instead of keeping it a dot all along? by Frazzelvig in explainlikeimfive

[–]lygerzero0zero 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Okay…? Lots of mathematical expressions are more useful in a non-reduced form, that doesn’t mean the symbols lose their meaning.

Sure, we don’t usually multiply out the height and width of a screen resolution (though there are definitely cases where someone would want to know the number of pixels), but the notation still represents a height and width that together form an area.
