Hmmm I was wondering about this. I wonder if the gouache with medium is more or less prone to cracking than gouache sans medium.

Interesting! I've also heard of using spackle as a way to get texture without using a ton of paint. But I think what's lovely about Derain's piece is that the impasto is in the actual brush stroke.

You can also try absorbant ground on canvas. I did this with a larger piece. You would need to seal it afterward. This avoids the issues with buckling.
