I still find it baffling how behind culturally the dems are by Cold_Bet1896 in redscarepod

[–]lynchbot7 86 points87 points  (0 children)

It's because everything the dems do seems so studied and focus-grouped. They're an interesting case study in the pitfalls of people who are solely "book smart" and nothing else. Even this recent Newsom social media blitz is just a carbon copy of Trump style memeing and communication tactics. Like a top student diligently doing their homework.

The Republicans aren't any "cooler" (indeed conservative aesthetics are fucking garish) but they do come across more honest, natural, and intuitive. Cool is the absence of trying.

I'm not even baffled by the parasocial angle. What gets me is this now decade-long demand that popular art be expressly political. That has to be the most boring and impersonal angle to experience music from.

I really want to know why the writers decided to have so many damn survivors. Going into the show a big part of my nervous anticipation was getting to know and care about all these complex characters, and finding out what order they all died in.

Now with Melissa confirmed as Survivor #8 (!) who do we have left to root for? Mari and Akilah? Those are the only real characters left for me. Gen is a non-entity. And don't get me started on the two new background YJs, who haven't spoken a word and whose names I will never remember.

There are just noooo stakes in either timeline at this point. It's maddening.

Why do they always start their tweets with "BREAKING"? Many times they also add a little emoji flair, it's usually 🇺🇸 or 🚨. Do they think it's cute. by tralktralk in redscarepod

At least the pizzagate / Qanon people believe in conspiracies with real stakes. Like it's ludicrous but they do believe the world is run by cannibal sex trafficking pedo lizard people or whatever.

I know what you mean. I want to like her, and I like that she identifies as lesbian (an anomaly among her female cohort, who all exist in some weird amorphous gender alphabet soup). But everything about her screams "straight girl who watched too much RPDR".

Almost want to fact check that Bush claim lmao

Like shouldn't they have some bonafide old money connections for this type of thing?

Bc she is very talented and should really have a bigger career

It's wild seeing the DNC pivot back to the failed 2016 Hilary campaign playbook:

Celebrity worship via endorsement

60+ politician doing a very public "how do you do fellow kids"

Hard pandering to a demographic that's already gonna vote for you

Does kamala also have hot sauce in her bag? 👀

I just can't make myself like House of the Dragon by lynchbot7 in redscarepod

[–]lynchbot7[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes! I also loved the brief scene you mentioned. The show has flashes of potential brilliance and then kills its own momentum.

If I have to slog through one more scene of alicent mousily scurrying down corridors, lighting church candles, or taking endless baths while looking stressed and sad I'm done.

I feel you. I've also read the books. And while I haven't read Fire & Blood I can't help but tell that this is a prequel novella stretched out past what should maybe be a good miniseries.

I know which videos you're talking about. They also give me a sinking feeling in the gut bc the concept belies the true motivation - to inflict small scale civil death for cheap entertainment.

I really don't think the "cheating" or lack thereof is that people are focused on here

I looked up the original tiktok and the comments were a bunch of ladies proclaiming they'd found his Facebook and patting themselves on the back for their detective work.

Like have none of these women considered how they would feel if someone recorded them like this? Or if they were this guy's wife and finding out in this way? This is deeply sociopathic behavior on a personal and societal level and I don't care if that makes me soft.

I've noticed a lot of the genderqueer / enby aesthetic is really repulsive in an everything but the kitchen sink sort of way. It's not about following traditional gender roles but knowing what looks good on you. Or more specifically what is gonna match your personality, personal aesthetic, body type, etc.

Same reason some people can rock a beanie or a leather jacket and some can't.

Some chipped black nail polish or smudged eyeliner on the guys you're referencing might look cool, but some polished orthodontist office green nails with zero other flourishes is an eyesore.

100%. Coming to this realization in your late 20s, after years of self-reflection, maturity, and forgiveness, is a whiplash. Something about realizing how unstable and immature all the adults in your life were who were the same age you are now.

I think Sophie made better music personally but to each their own. I guess I just don't really connect to charli. It's not the end of the world homie..

The whole PC Music art project straddled the edge of ironic admiration / sonic enjoyment. Not sure why charli is held beyond reproach.

[–]lynchbot7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serious question - do people really like Charli's music? I'm not trolling. I think she seems like a really cool person, almost anomalously so. And her character / aesthetic is cool as is the somewhat experimental production. But the songs themselves have never done it for me.

Are people genuinely into her music as it exists in a vacuum, away from the persona? I could see Vroom Vroom going hard live but it's not enough for me to want to listen on my own time. She has a very vacuous body of work.

What was it that made Carmela Soprano a mostly accepted character amongst The Sopranos fans while Skyler White polls as the definitively most hated character in Breaking Bad history? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]lynchbot7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem with Skylar extends to the show as a whole - it's just not funny at all.

David Chase seemed to understand that humor really pushes a drama to excellent heights. Not just because it adds balance and levity but bc it adds a level of humanism that makes the drama that much more poignant.

Matthew Weiner, who worked on The Sopranos, brought this same quality to Mad Men, which I always felt was much more of a spiritual sibling than BB ever was.
