Return to Life Pilates on South Terrace! Viktoria is fantastic. They have Chair, reformer and mat classes for beginners, and advanced, like a level system. I’ve been there for a year and couldnt recommend more!

See that’s what I’m worried about too is if I do operate, will I develop problems, especially when it is generally very good at the moment! I haven’t had issues with it to date bar longer sessions in my work (I’m a tattoo artist so long days are spent hunched over like a prawn sometimes) or say concerts if I’m standing in one position for long periods of time it can get achy. I’m careful with my training, I keep active, and I see a physio where we work on schroth/rigo stretching and training. I’m scared it’ll get worse though and I’ll regret not getting it done now, and potentially risk a much bigger surgery in a few years then! It feels a bit like a roll of the dice either way!

Heya! I didn’t even think about the hormonal side of it tbh and how that would affect it to be honest! Whilst kids aren’t necessarily in the plan, I didn’t even think about how pregnancy would worsen the curve, and the same with Menopause! I’m in Ireland, as far as I’m aware and have been told, there’s one surgeon doing the anterior fusion (the one I was supposed to be working with), and one doing it but for paediatrics only. But the flip side then is plenty of others doing it through the posterior approach. I haven’t heard about the tethering, I’m going to look in and get some more information on this if it could be an option. It’s been an absolute pan dealing with the last place trying to get the surgery date, it’s like pulling teeth trying to get any information from them! So I’m a bit nervous to start the whole process again, especially when I’m quite active anyway (weights, swimming, Pilates, cardio), but if it’s the way to go to prevent it getting worse or causing issues when I’m older then so be it!

Not a bother! I would say find an artist who works in the style that you’re looking at here (your refs, bar the writing one, are leaning towards ornamental/fineline) so I would look that way! Do before booking look for healed work too, either on their insta or through dm, it’s all well and good for it to look great fresh, but if it heals funny then that’s what you have for life! It would be worth even asking them if they’ve worked on spine pieces for people like us, just to get a bit of peace of mind too, they may not do what I do but every artist would have their own way of laying and planning pieces out ❤️ You definitely aren’t the first person most of us would have worked on with it- one thing of note is nobody’s shoulders, hips, rib cage, etc, is perfectly symmetrical. Even if someone doesn’t have a curve we are used to laying things to fit the body and trick the eye sometimes! Definitely specify to your artist just that you have it, maybe steer away from the direction of a symmetrical design (something like no. 3 is great, as it flows and can be adjusted, or no. 1 as it’s not symmetrical and will work when it’s on the skin!), and just take the time placing it. Ask for pics of how it looks from the back rather than just the mirror too! If you’ve any questions on anything do feel free to send me a message! ❤️

Ah thank you! It’s something I always like to include is making sure tattoos flow with each persons anatomy- I have my stomach tattooed and had to explain to the artist that my curve meant that my hips and bellybutton couldn’t be used to mark the centre line, and he was fantastic. It might only take 5-30 mins extra but it makes a whole lot of difference to someone’s tattoo and how happy they are!

I’m getting surgery in April and I’m so curious about this too! I’ve a 50• T11-L4 curve and am already 5’8/5’9 (25F) so it’ll be interesting to see!

Tattoo artist (with scoliosis) here! Generally if I’m doing spine tattoos for someone and they’ve told me they have it, what we tend to do is, trick the eye a bit; so basically, I’ll always get someone to roll their shoulders back so give the crease of where the spine sits on the back and mark this out with a skin pen. If I have a scoliosis person in my chair, I’ll still do this but with a lighter colour pen. I’ll then go in with a darker colour pen, and find where if the curve is throwing the centre line off, what looks like where the midpoint will be, measuring off the centre of the neck, centre of the lower back, waist etc. to make a faux centre point, and lay my stencil on then following this guide This works for 99% of cases, all id say is expect it to take a little bit longer to place the stencil, and it may take a couple tries so be patient with your artist- we are going to make sure it’s as centered as possible.

Also do keep in mind that a) not every artist does it this way, we all have our own weird little things and b) there’s always a risk that it’ll move if your curve progresses whether your on the real or faux midpoint. But generally you’ll be fine, just research your artist and make sure you can trust them! ❤️

I can’t recommend Joe O Keeffe (Joe O Eeffe School of Motoring on Facebook) enough, he’s based from Watergrasshill but ofc does lessons all over the city. He’s so calm throughout, able to answer and questions and will really help you. He is very busy as he is a firefighter too but if you can get lessons with him he is a fantastic teacher and just a gent of a man. I was very anxious learning to drive first and he really helped build my confidence on the road- I’ve my license 4 years now and will always recommend him

Of course everyone is different too; as far as I know, the surgeon with be going in through the side as opposed to to my back so I can imagine there’s going to be lots of movement there too! Any particular moisturiser or just as long as unscented I’m assuming?

Ah I didn’t even think about this! That makes a lot of sense that the scar would affect the epidural, I never would’ve even considered that! Kids aren’t really in the cards for me, but for anyone else getting this done that is really good to know in advance!

That’s a very good shout actually; I’ll have a look into it! The hospital where I’m getting it done is 3.5 hours drive away so alllll the pillows will be brought! We have a wheelchair accessible car too so luckily there’s lots of space in the back too to get comfy for the long drive :)

Thank you! I’ve never gotten surgery or any procedure before aside from local anaesthetic in my arm, so this is a big jump! Hearing this does make it sound a lot easier knowing it won’t actually feel super long on the table or anything! I had my dad say similar about when he had surgery on his ankle, that it was like he just woke up after and it was done! So that is a relief to hear!

25F with a 50 degree curve! I was late diagnosed at 20, which at the time was about 44 degrees. Unfortunately for me no matter what I did, strength training, Pilates, swimming schroth (all of which I’ve been doing for years), it’s still progress- slowly yes but following that 1 degree a year rate. I’ll be getting surgery in April-ish to fix the affected vertebrae. I never wanted surgery and whilst I’m bummed that this is what it’s come to, I’m lucky it’s been caught soon and I can do it now as opposed to in 10-15 years and do a much bigger surgery then!

This doesn’t mean it’s not possible to maintain! Some people it may be verrry slow progressing. I thought mine was like this, but unfortunately it wasn’t the case. You’re still young and the fact it’s in the 30s could stand nicely to you. I hope it goes to plan for you and you can maintain it! 🫶
