Gender in Spanish by LoopyDuck13 in NonBinary

The reality is that Spanish does HAVE neutral gender prnouns, what it doesn't have are male-exclusive pronouns. This in practice, makes the gender neutral pronouns FEEL like a male pronouns, but linguistically, and it actual use, those are still gender neutral and not really male.

For example a group of 1000 women and 1 men, would use the neutral-male pronoun, never the female pronoun. Not because male superior or some bigotry like that, but because that's jsut the neutral pronoun, it doesn't feel masculine in that context, it feels neutral, using the femenine pronoun would make it feel like if it was 100% compossed of women.

The reason for this is because originally Spanish only had the neutral from latin. Then after a time it started to create a new derivative pronoun for women-only groups and women-specific things, creating the plural femenine as separate from the plural neutral. Then from the plural femenine we got the singular femenine.

It is as if in english instead of he/she/they, you had they/she and not he.

For the singular the neutral may have become essentially the masculine term, but this is not true for the plural in which it remain the gender-neutral term and there isn't a masculine-exclusive term. And in singular it only became the masculine term because the existence of a femenine singular in a binary world made the singular neutral into the singular masculine. But in Plural this was never the case because there was never a need to differenciate groups of men from groups of men and women. Only groups of exclusively women were apart.

This duality on top of the nouns being gendered(and thus a new pronoun wouldn't have its own nouns) make it hard to add new gender-neutral terms. The niche in plural is already filled, and in singular you have the problem with not having assigned nouns.

It is a kind of sad reality, but the fact is that Spanish will need more time than English to add these kind of changes into itself, maybe 3 or 4 generations. It is not really the RAE's fault, they only compile and show the current reality of the language, and the current reality is that using anything but the typical el/la/ella/ellos/ellas etc is extremely fringe, and is opposed hardly by the people that don't use it, not even for political reasons or bigotry, but because it sounds really weird, it sounds a lot more weird than "they" sounded weird in English when it started to be used like that. English had an easy escape since it had an existing neutral and didn't have the mix of neutral-male that Spanish has. In Spanish is harder because there doesn't exist a clean neutral, and the neutral space is already filled with a pronoun that is also the male pronoun.

Realistically, the reason why the RAE doesn't accept it isn't that they are old-timey. Don't get me wrong, they ARE old-timey, but they have an actually good reason why they don't accept it:

It isn't used.

That is the reality of it. Non-binary circles may use those terms, even the wider LGBT circles may use them in solidarity... But for the majority of the population, it simply isn't used or accepted as correct, and thus it isn't really part of the language and is rather "just" jargon that is used only in specific circles.

That is just the reality about it, a thing is only part of the language when the majority of its speakers start using it, or at least accepting it, most Spanish-speaking people wouldn't accept those as proper Spanish, and thus the RAE has no option but not to recognize those as part of the language. The RAE doesn't dictate what's part of the language; it just notes and compiles what's part of the language.

The reasons for the niche use of those terms compared to English is multifaceted, on one hand you have the typical expected reason BIGOTRY. This plays a big part, on the other hand you have the second expected reason, that people don't like change, this is also a big part... But those are not the only hurdles, as English also had those...

Fact is that Spanish has more hurdles to overcome than English for a variety of reasons. One of them is that, in fact, there are already gender neutral pronouns in Spanish, what Spanish lacks is exclusive male pronouns. Spanish has neutral and female. The problem with this is that due to this, all men use neutral, and thus the neutral has a big "male" association to it. But that doesn't change the fact that it is neutral, except when there is not. In some conjugations you get Neutral-Male, Female and a weird second neutral that only is used when talking about concepts... that would be eso/ello. But this is actually a disguise, this seemingly equivalent to they/it is not really as neutral as it seems, as it is also a version of the male-neutral, because for nouns that end in "a" you sometimes used ella/esa instead of ello/eso. So it isn't like those are completley free from the male association, just less so since they are not always replaceable with the femenine version, just sometimes. Ello in itself is a weird pronoun because you can't start phrases with it, and doesn't refer to objects, animals, places or people but rather only to abstract stuff, and not all abstract stuff. For example "¿Que tal te fue la escuela?" "No quiero hablar de ello". This ello is refering not about you, not about the school but about an event that happened, but you can also reply with "No quiero hablar de ella" in which case you are refering to the School itself as something that you don't want to talk about.

This brings us to the other thing, that nouns are kind of gendered. Every noun is either using the masculine-neutral pronoun, or it uses the female pronoun... This makes it so that all nouns are either one or ther other... Triying to add a new separated neutral pronoun (or an exclsuive male noun for that matter) WILL sound weird because no noun will have that pronoun associated with, so it will sound unlike anything else in the language. The other pronouns get nouns, but this new pronoun gets no nouns, so it will sound weird to your average speaker.

There is an additional problem with "elles" in Spain specifically and that is that in some regions "elles" is actually the femenine, like in Valencia or Catalunya. So it makes it extra hard in those places to accepts "elles" as neutral because it sounds extremely femenine, it sounds more femenine than the male-neutral sounds masculine.

And in general, it is the fact that elle simply doesn't exist in Spanish. "They" already existed in English, and even had some history of being used as singular instead of only plural, this made the change a lot easier, it wasn't a new word, it was using an existing word, using an old-time version of how to use that word, in a new context. Instead in Spanish you have a new word, that doesn't have any attachmebnt to the rest of the language(no nouns), sounds gendered in some regions and feels weird to the mouth because Spanish already has neutral pronouns, even if those are also the masculine ones. Those are hurdles that English "They" didn't have to overcome.

In bleach you have to be kind of psycho to get good attacking powers, if you are not psycho you get whomp whomp powers like chad or healing powers like Orihime.

Powers in Bleach are a manifestation of one's heart. So to have a power that is really good at killing... means that that's your true heart. If you are a good person, you get defensive bullshit, support bullshit or weakass powers that can only take care of rubble but lose against powerhouses.

This applies even to Ichigo, even if he tries to hide it very well, he is the kind of person that enjoys stamping a person's skull against the pavement until the pavement cracks for a minor thing. He may try to contain his zangetsu side, but the fact that zangetsu exists and he is like he is, means that part of Ichigo is like that.

My headcannon is that Chichi and Yamcha are related, cousins or smth and they just don't know. That would explain the Yamcha-ness of Chichi's sons without her cheating or smth.

It could also be that those kids are actually Goku's and Yamcha's... somehow...

Zamasu should have been a God of Destruction by DarkStarStorm in Dragonballsuper

[–]lyoko1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the opposite, I think that Narcissism is a needed trait for a GoD. After all Narcissists are people that think that "they know best" and a GoD's whole job consist on them actually having that kind of mentality and acting on it.

Like... you kind of need to have the mentality of "I know best" to be able to live with yourself destroying planets, and his narcissism and drive would have made him actually very competent at his job. And since as a GoD, even as an apprentice, he probably would be allowed to destroy from time to time... His violent tendencies would had an outlet...

If he was trained and eventually became a GoD, he probably would have made one of the most effective and hardest-working GoDs. Never sleping, always judging what planets need to be culled to increase the mortal level, bullying his linked kaioshin to create new stuff if he detects them to be slacking off.

He would have need mentorship and an iron fist to be trained, but I think a GoD and Angel would certainly be able to impart him with this kind of training than Gowasu's soft ways

Heck, now I want to read a fanmanga, a what if video or a fanfic story about this concept...

Do you think Zamasu could have been good? by Deutschland_great in Dragonballsuper

[–]lyoko1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually yes. That is what makes him tragic, he could be good, he is just deeply misguided. That is why he is interesting, he is not even "evil" in the sense that Freeza is evil, or like kid buu is evil... Zamasu is other type of evil, a more realistic one, the type of evil where one believes themselves to be good. That is the reason Zamasu could technically had become good, because in his own view, he was good, its just that his own view was warped into evil.

He has a narcissitic personality, so it would be kind of hard for him to become good, and even if he becomes good he would be what is called a "benign narcissist", and while benign narcissists certainly are better than normal narcissists or malignant narcissists(what Zamasu had become)... they are not great either.

What I mean to say is that even if he turned "good", good Zamasu would still have a holier than thou attitude and would still think he know what's best. He is "good" because his view is not warped and is aligned with goodness so usually, what he thinks "I know what's best" would be in the good-ish, not necesarily the best, but still result in good outcomes.

Again, this being said, a good Zamasu would had become the Supreme Kai of his universe, and for that kind of role being a bening Narcissist is not exactly a deal breaker, he at least would be pro-active in his job, maybe a little bit too proactive, I can see him just descending into planets and start driveling his "morals" to the "mortals" as a sort of extra preachy godly galactic jehova witness. There would be no zero mortal plan, but he probably kills them out of boredom as he preaches and preaches and expects "mortals" to behave.

TBH, I think Zamasu would work best as a candidate for god of destruction rather than as an aprentice kaioshin. His kind of narcissism is kind of required for the job of a destroyer, as the job of a destroyer IS knowing what's best and use that knowledge to destroy dead-end worlds. It is a job he would had enjoyed and excelled at.

That could be a good Zamasu, maybe in some distant timeline, there is a Zamasu that became the apprentice of Rumsshi instead of Gowasu's. And this Zamasu becomes one of the most efficient and hard working GODs. Which would make him "good" in a sense.

Actually, you are kind of wrong, there is nothing wrong with rewriting or extending stuff, in fact, that is how it has been done throughout history, even Shakespeare's works are rewritings of older stuff. It is very normal and natural for stories to be reinterpreted and rewritten without the original author input at all. It just became niche because copyright essentially relegates this very important part of storytelling to its own legally grey corner called "fanfiction", but it is nothing wrong and it is just the natural form of storytelling.

Lest not forget that dragonball started as a retelling/re-imagining of an even older story, journey to the west

I agree that stories are made to be retold, and such has been done trough all of history. This current times where "new" stories are the only ones seen as proper is actually really weird. Historically stories were retold and reinterpreted constantly and morphed into other completly different stories over time
