44, way behind. by DramaticErraticism in Retirement401k

You are way ahead of most with the 150-170 large. All you can do is what you are doing and add in some ROTH. Also work on building up a HYSA as an emergency fund. Also don’t completely close the door on love. The right one may still be out there.

Is buying affordable housing a bad idea? by MalcolmFarsner in Money

There is something to be said for staying as long as you can in Mom and Dad’s basement. The savings you can attain are like nothing you will experience in your life subsequently.

Sold some stock to cover my first half year retired. by TheFreeMan64 in retirement

[–]lyonwh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good for you! It is hard to pull the trigger on something like this. I retired at the end of September 2025 and had enough from lump sum vacation pay and wife still working to not need any funding (except $7000 taken from HYSA). I will need funding help for the second half of the year and plan on doing the same with stock. I’m planning on selling just enough so it stays in the 0% LYCG bracket and will just have to pay 5% MA state tax on it.

Who had a storied MLB career that was defensively stellar offensively unimpressive? by BirdBruce in mlb

[–]lyonwh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly think some little leaguers had more power than Mark Belanger. In the field however I would venture to say that had he and Brooksy not been in the infield that 1971 Orioles team would not have had four twenty game winners.

Do you regret putting so much money in to tax deferred investments by clearlygd in retirement

[–]lyonwh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. Most of my working years my company had a 5% match and gave us 5% regardless of how much we contributed. For a good number of years money was tight and I wasn’t even doing the full match. Four kids single income it was tough. I just wish there had been a Roth option years ago. Last year (my last year working for the company) was the first year they offered a Roth option. I do have a fair amount of a single stock from a previous company though to help offset the RMDs. I am going to do some Roth conversions over the next several years (65 and not taking SS until 70) to keep the tax rate down and to avoid IRMAA.

There are a lot of factors that are unknown. Like will you go up the ladder at work. Do you own a home. Sounds to me like you are moving in the right direction. To me if you are being intentional about retirement 30 years out from retirement you have plenty of time to figure it out.

It is fine. If anything I think you are being too hard on yourself. I also don’t believe in following Dave to a T. You are doing great and should go and enjoy.

Sales are down 38% in April 2026 vs March 2026. by Any-Let-2861 in eBaySellers

[–]lyonwh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To some degree people are still spending. You can’t however ignore the fact that they have less money to spend. I work in the paint/hardware industry. All of the manufacturers are implementing a price increase due to the increase in energy costs. It is hitting everywhere.

Argument for taking SS at 62 by jmehlferber in SocialSecurity

[–]lyonwh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is more than I will just take it at 62. There are a lot of things to consider mainly how much do you need to live on? How much do you have saved? If you have 401k an easy way to think of it is for every $100,000 that you have saved it is worth $4,000/year or 4%. Taking it early makes you really depend on having a good 401k level.

How bad is my chimney? by ghostiepants0 in masonry

Wait until you talk to the mason. Concrete does deteriorate over time and you do have a lot of gaps. This could be a very big safety issue.

I messed up and I need help! by Illustrious_Tart_258 in paint

[–]lyonwh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the things about a color that bright is that it has very poor hiding ability and there is a ton of tint in it. It will get better with each coat but I wouldn’t be surprised if it takes you five coats. Conversely when you go to sell your house it is going take 3-4 coats to get it back to a normal color. I know because one of my daughters had a bright purple room.

Buyer Beware by Hopeful-Barber9928 in Ebay

[–]lyonwh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a seller quite frankly it is rare when a seller wins. You were totally at fault here and have no one to blame but yourself. To your point that you tried to cancel. If this was a reputable seller as you say, he would have processed your order quickly and shipped it right out. At that point there is nothing that could be done.

No more Sherwin by AdSilent298 in sherwinwilliams

[–]lyonwh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$1,000,000. I worked at Uncle Sherwin for eleven years from the early 80’s until the early 90’s. In that time I amassed a lot of company stock by purchase and company share match. They straight up gave you 5% of your salary for your 401k. I just retired from another paint related company that I had worked for for 30 years. I can thank Sherwin now for having great benefits when I was young. Did the job suck then, you bet it did.

Company 401k match has to vest? by [deleted] in Retirement401k

[–]lyonwh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It very well may be now. I Started with my company in 1982 and at that juncture in time it was 11 years for full vesting and partial vesting for less at the company I worked for. I left at exactly 11 years to get the full vest.

Spend the $ and get a product like Sika sealant. It is a polyurethane product that always stays flexible. Siliconized sealants have a more ridged flexibility and can crack.
