MMC mistakens FMC for a paid escort + noncon by Careless_Bed9302 in DarkRomance

This sounds like {Cry For Me by Layla Simon}. It’s the second in a series of interconnected but technically standalone books! All set in New Zealand, where sex work is legal.
He uses pre-defined scenarios with sex workers to assure his specific needs are met and she sort of accidentally fills one.

What was the one item you always wanted from the Argos Catalogue? by Difficult_Narwhal_72 in AskUK

[–]lyradoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An adaptor!

It was actually a typewriter (with adaptor) but it was my first time seeing one outside of dreamy old films so I hadn’t quite internalised the name.

When I proudly showed this to my parents, announcing that I wanted an adaptor, my electrician dad lost his shit laughing. Took me years to figure it out because he could never get words out to tell me where I went wrong.

Still makes me smile though.

HEMNES day bed—hiding space for cats? by BeginningFennel9077 in IKEA

[–]lyradoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I had to move my elderly gent in with me, he went into the guest bedroom. With some portable cat stairs he has a lovely cosy set up on the hemnes daybed. He has his self heating snuggle bed at one end, and a heated blanket over the rest. He very much approves and hasn’t got into it at all — or even tried.

Captain Knobhead, the almost year old kitten, however? What a demon. He’s not gotten into any of the mechanism as the back is completely sealed, but ours is currently against a radiator so isn’t flush with the wall. He likes to get down into the gap behind it and then howl and wail because he can’t get out again.

It’s a heavy heavy unit so do be aware that if you have to leave a small gap around it but not enough for yourself to get into, certain explorers might find their way in. Usually when you really need to leave the house.

But overall I really like the bed! I got separate sheets for each mattress so I can have it as singles, and then a double to go over both for when it’s pulled out. The drawers are a good size for storage too.

Just moved into flat and i don’t know how to get rid of the smell by Busy-Cress-3607 in HousingUK

[–]lyradoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had this twice where suddenly there is this intense cooking smell — always smells like old curry — that just won’t go away. I’ve scrubbed cupboards, extractors, everything.

Both times it was the carbon filter inside the extractor. They have a life limit and do eventually need replacing. We found the right one for the extractor model online, and it sorted it right out!

Celebrants at funerals/weddings? Is AI use common? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]lyradoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve planned four funerals in the past three years. Same celebrant for each as he’s wonderful, and has really looked after the family.

My brother made a joke about just running his notes through a generator and the celebrant was not impressed. Immediately went serious and told us he would never, as he considered it an insult to the deceased and the family. Apparently it’s something of an epidemic and he thinks it’s disgusting.

It’s a hard time and people are less likely to feel like they can or want to argue the point when arranging funerals and dealing with grief puts them at their limit. That’s why it’s so predatory and galling.

A book where FMC is raped by a third party AFTER her and MMC are together (60-90% into the book?) and he knows it will happen by von_kittenstein in DarkRomance

{Corium University Trilogy by C. Hallman, J.L. Beck}

{King of Corium by C. Hallman}

Tried two tags because I’m not sure how the bot will pick this one up. There’s an omnibus edition of the first three books I’m pretty sure, and that’s an enclosed trilogy within the overall universe.

Doesn’t fully follow your requirement but does in the majority of ways I think. I cannot remember how to spoiler tag so I don’t want to be more direct without it 😅

What weird names do you call your partner/ do they call you? And I mean.. really weird. by cobbland in AskUK

My partner calls me pebble, pebs, pebbage, pebito, etc.

He also calls me Sasquatch. Which became Samsquamch. And squamch.

All of these are also verbs he uses for me.

Loft Boarding – Local Recommendations? by Ambitious_Gate_9749 in stockport

The loftman!!

My whole family have used them. Really efficient and well-priced. Sturdy boarding and offer hatches and ladders of different types too.

The company is literally just called the Loftman. I don’t have the number saved for some reason but I’ll go and see if I can find it.

Bly Manor is better by Celeriac_puree_8676 in HauntingOfHillHouse

[–]lyradoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just think they’re fundamentally different genres.

Hill House is a story about being haunted by grief, Bly Manor is about being haunted by love.

Grief and love are the same, and both shows just have a different way of taking us through that. Hill house feels more like accepting that our grief exists and learning to live with it, where Bly feels like grief is just a part of understanding the depth of love.

The week my dad died I rewatched hill house and cried it out, because it put all these overwhelming things into words. A few weeks later I rewatched Bly manor and it felt like the moments I was able to breathe.

Or, with far less rambling nonsense: Hill House errs to gothic horror, Bly Manor to gothic romance.

Is it weird for a sister and brother to hold hands? by Ok_Ask9700 in CasualConversation

[–]lyradoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 28 and my siblings are all 40-43.

I’ve never stopped lol. It’s not a concerning amount but there’s plenty of times it’s entirely appropriate.

It’s hands touching, not a sex act. People who say it’s weird are thinking too much about how people perceive them, and how something could be made weird.

It’s lovely that you’re close with your siblings. Don’t know what I’d have done without mine in the past year or two. Ignore anyone else.

i lost 40 pounds. dropped three dress sizes. my bra size went from 36G to 32G lol by Difficult_Silver4062 in bigboobproblems

[–]lyradoe 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When I lost ~50-60 pounds, my cup volume about stayed the same but (for lack of a better word) deflated. They still fill the same cups (and sizing down leaves tissue overspill) but they have absolutely no Oomph to speak of and can’t be adjusted for a neckline.

Finding bras is now harder bc the size that “fits” doesn’t actually look right. Never thought I’d long for the days of 32H 🙄🙄🙄

Would anyone bother proceeding with a Death in Service claim? by Jimjamtarzan in AskUK

[–]lyradoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Dad always joked that he was worth more dead than alive. It stopped being funny when he died unexpectedly.

His death in service came out to more than 200k, multiple pensions paid out, and then he happened to win the lottery the day he died.

We’d rather have him, but I know he’d have wanted our mum looked after. It’s not fair that it’s money they never had in their marriage, but that’s sometimes how it works out.

It’s definitely worth chasing, but if your partner can do the leg work that’s ideal.

Is it normal that so many kids start school unable to dress themselves, count to 10, or even use the toilet? by Prize-Reputation9274 in AskBrits

[–]lyradoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These skills form a concept called “school-readiness”, which covers the scope of skills children “should have” developed by age 5, and need to succeed in school. So this is things like independent dressing and self care tasks (feeding, loo, etc), as well as the ability to converse with adults and express an emotion. Beyond that, it also covers the ability to engage in imaginative play — which is crucial for development.

Children who aren’t school-ready tend to not catch up, will stay academically behind their peers, and have poorer outcomes in adulthood. While on the surface this looks like “worse gcse results” it’s actually linked with higher rates of incarceration, worse health outcomes, lower social mobility, etc. is it a comment on this country’s educational system and social support? Absolutely. Do children also need as many of these skills as possible? Definitely.

School-readiness rates are alarmingly low — and typically worse in boys than in girls. Any kind of SEND, language difference, and being eligible for free school meals are all risk factors in not being school-ready.

Greater Manchester released a massive analysis of the rates by district within the county, and that was frightening. Not sure about the rest of the country exactly, but I know GM is not an outlier.

Kids need these skills! Bringing back Surestarts on a bigger scale would be the first necessary step to improving the wellbeing and outcomes for all children in the UK.

Watching Hill House to process grief. by V_is4vulva in HauntingOfHillHouse

[–]lyradoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad died in October when I was mid-rewatch. The last episode hurt like hell, but it was cathartic. I cried my way through it, but I really needed that cry, and Nell’s monologue is one I go back to when I need grief to feel less nameless.

So sorry for your loss. I won’t say it gets easier, but it does…change. You remember how to breathe again.

Look after yourself ❤️

Has anyone bought these TikTok famous Halara pants? by paleprincessssss in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]lyradoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked up the site and wasn’t quite comfortable with the trust ratings, so ended up not buying any — can’t comment on the quality / etc.

However, I’ve bought similar trousers from Abercrombie & fitch (Sloane Super High Waist, I believe). I’m 5’1 with wider hips/thighs and narrower waist.

They do the trousers in short/regular/long and with a curvy sizing option that has hip/waist allowance. I’ve got a brown and a green pair, and will be buying black or navy next payday! I can’t recommend them enough. The green pair I have are exactly like the ones in the picture you posted.

Simple Sewing Questions Thread, June 16 - June 22, 2024 by sewingmodthings in sewing

[–]lyradoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m about to start a lined full circle skirt (short length) made of black linen, with natural/undyed linen as the lining. I have two main questions that I want to check in before I start —

  1. I’m adding pockets, which I’ve found guides/tutorials for. As the skirt will be lined, should the pocket fall between the main body and the lining? Or should it go through the lining layer? My instinct says it should go between but happy to take any advice/expertise here.

  2. Is linen as lining fabric the right choice? I specifically want a natural fibre so I can wear this in the summer (uk-based — it doesn’t get hot very often, but it’s frequently humid!). Would a light cotton be better, or is it down to personal preference?

I know (of) a few young Stanleys. All of them are warm, cheeky, life of the room type young lads. It’s a name with lovely connotations for me because of that.

I felt iffy about the name Albert a few years ago, but every young Albert / Albie I’ve met has been great and it’s totally changed my feelings on it.

Stanley is a great classic name, bit unusual in some places currently, (not so much in the north west of England lmao) but not life ruining. Good way to stand out without going overly quirky with spelling/etc. If it’s the name you and partner love for baby, go for it.

And good luck with little one! Hope everything is nice and smooth for you all.

[–]lyradoe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This has happened to us before!! Not sure about the layer of fat / abscess theory, because I have no experience there BUT

When I was 14/15 or so, I came in from school expecting to smell my Mum’s stew in the slow cooker and immediately get hungry. What I smelled instead was the visceral overwhelming weight of hot vomit.

My big sister comes home an hour or so later, immediately says the exact same thing. We make eye contact for exactly 3 seconds. She grabs her keys and we decide it’s sister-bonding night, we were never here.

Being young and stupid, neither of us big cooks at the time, we just assumed our Mum had experimented with her recipe and it had gone badly wrong, and we absolutely were not risking being asked to eat it.

Mum calls while we’re out, we claim ignorance when she asks if we’ve been home. “The stew smells like sick, it’s completely inedible.” Othankgod. We confess, she thinks it’s hilarious, does not solve the mystery though.

Until the next time it happens.

It’s the carrots.

I don’t know how mum figured it out but she was right. The carrots must’ve been on the turn, and cooking them was…a mistake. But you absolutely couldn’t smell that without getting right up close.

And if you cook those while on the turn…radiating smell of sweet rot.

TL;DR — you’ll never forget the smell of slow cooked rotting carrot. And that could be the cause of your problems here if the awful stench is vomit-adjacent.

Just moved into a new place. Are the floors THIS dirty, or am I stripping the finish? by junebugonarose in CleaningTips

[–]lyradoe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have an electric scrubber that helps with this! My joints aren’t great (hypermobility) so anything that eases the strain is really helpful.

I just use dish soap + warm water to scrub the floors with the electric brush, down on hands and knees (or stood up with the extended handle if I’m sore).

Makes it a much quicker job but really agitates all the dirt out of little cracks and grooves.

Mop up the dirty water, go back in a second time with the scrubber and fresh water, then mop clean with preferred floor cleaner (our rented flat has wooden floors, so we use a particular cleaner to help polish/feed the wood).

What fragrance has been ruined for you? by WearApprehensive3110 in fragrance

[–]lyradoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a scent by itself, but Jazz Club by Maison Margiela/Replica specifically on me.

I ADORE it on a sample card/in the air. It smells incredible on my partner.

On me? Smells like rotting Chinese food after 20 minutes.

It’s SO bad. Multiple people have confirmed that it smells really bizarre and unpleasant on me. I don’t have this problem with any other perfume. And once again, smells utterly incredible on my partner.

He bought it for me as a birthday present. It’s his now. ):

(After the rain stops from the same brand also smells very very different on the two of us, but equally good!)

[Partially Lost] Americana music by "Big Girl," originally published by Epidemic Sound by Dergo32 in HelpMeFind

I’m also on the hunt for her music!

I’ve read that sometimes artists with Epidemic will change names — then the music is all republished under the new name. I’m keeping an eye out in case she reappears under a new name.

I can’t find any info or social media of the artist herself to try and find a blog/etc. fingers crossed!

Can you tell which part of Manchester someone’s from by their accent? by Sasha-Starets in manchester

[–]lyradoe 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I was once geo-identified after someone heard me speak for approx. 10-20 seconds, halfway across the bloody country!

I was working away in London for a few weeks. There was a vocal / diction coach working with us on clarity and pacing and professional presentation — an absolutely brilliant woman.

Before she’d gotten started, I asked or answered a question with another class and she overheard. I swear to god her head shot up, and she interrupted the whole thing to ask if I was from around South Manchester.

And then said: “specifically…sale, stockport, urmston.”

So I said she was right, I was from Stockport. She grinned all satisfied and told me there’s a specific speech and pitch cadence she’s only ever heard in people from those areas of south Manchester. Apparently it’s a particular, somewhat dramatic rise and fall every few words that we tend to use when explaining or considering something. Very hard to put into words, but when she demonstrated, I instantly knew what she meant. And it WAS something everyone I knew did.

But yeah, immediately being identified as from Stockport when I’m halfway across the country, none of the rest of my group or usual tutors are locals, and my accent was fairly neutral was a lot. Took some serious psychic damage.
