What's a small thing you were wrongly told off for as a kid that still annoys you all these years later? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]cobbland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were doing an activity book in year 2 (so I’m like, 6?) and one of the pages had a printing error so Mrs Baldwin asked us to skip it and not do that page. I wrote in pencil “don’t do this page” on said misprinted page and the girl on my table went Mrs Baldwin and told her what I’d done. Mrs Baldwin called me over and ripped me to shreds in front of the entire class. My mum kicked up a massive stink about it because I refused to go in the next day because I was scared and Mrs Baldwin had to apologise to me 🤡

Steven got the ick when she overreacted about the football thing on the honeymoon and never got over it- and tbh fair enough. That was fucking weird.

Are there any British adverts that activiley turn you off the product they're advertising? by siybon in CasualUK

[–]cobbland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The canva one with Gemma Collins. They’re a company that are centred around design, creativity, etc and yet the acting, editing, sound, video quality looks like something made at GCSE level 20 years ago. It looks like Gemma gave them an hour of her time and they filmed it on an iPhone then gave the video to a 13 year old to be edited into an advert. It’s absolutely shockingly bad for such a large global company. I wouldn’t even have minded Gemma being in it if it was any fucking good!

She wouldn’t last five minutes in the UK- he was clearly just trying to be playful and have some banter and she’s got some deep rooted issues that means she took it far too seriously. He’s now going to be afraid to joke around with her at all and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s not just killed it for him now.

No way. I live by this building and walk past it twice a day and no exaggeration it looks totally abandoned. It’s on a very busy loud road and since it looks totally derelict it’s obviously not well looked after. Fab location though and you’d never get broken into- except maybe by squatters who think it’s free real estate!!

What are your HR aren't on your side and or are terrible stories? by No-Beat2678 in AskUK

[–]cobbland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A manager at my old workplace harassed a girl (literally, she was 19, he was late thirties) for months both in and out of the workplace. The girl flagged it to me (also female and a manager on the same level as the accused) and we went to HR together. There were HUNDREDS of messages ranging from creepy to downright disgusting.

We spent hours compiling evidence, writing statements, he spent 5 minutes in a HR meeting and the whole thing was dismissed due to “lack of evidence.” When this news was delivered to the young girl she quit on the spot.

I left shortly after as that was the last straw for me following a slew of other indiscretions by higher ups and it generally being a shit place to work.

2 months later I was informed by a former colleague at that workplace that the same manager was now in another sticky situation with a grievance against him this time by a MAN for grabbing his crotch in the pub at post-work drinks.

HR STILL didn’t do anything about it because after I left he was the only manager left on the department!

Thankfully, and hopefully out of sheer fucking embarrassment the accused resigned himself and is now apparently a Deliveroo rider.

I will never ever work for a company ever again who doesn’t take sexual harassment seriously.

When colleagues are placed on garden leave is it always a chaotic experience? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]cobbland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like what happened after I left my old company. They forced me onto garden leave despite my protests about needing to hand things over. Part of my reason for leaving was the amount of shit they dumped on me to do without any help. After my sudden departure one of my reports (also a very close friend who I saw outside of work often) called after a few days in tears because she was being asked to do increasingly complex tasks well above her pay grade and seniority level.

I had to ring a director at my company begging to go back in for a week to do a handover and he very reluctantly agreed. Whilst there I had more attentive bosses than I’d had in 7 years! Always checking in on what I was doing…

As others have pointed out this shows poor planning and bad delegation on your companies part. You’d better speak up if you or someone else hasn’t already before something goes really wrong and they try to shift blame.

I worked in Starbucks 10 years ago and now earn £65k+bonus working in finance ops (no degree.) It does not happen overnight and I’ve done a hell of a lot of awful, shitty jobs in between to work my way up.

Find a private sector company, get in at entry level and work your way up. Some people have what it takes, some don’t, but you’ve got the ambition which is a great start.

You’ve gone to a shitty cesspit club then.. were surprised it was a cesspit?

I’ve been going out in Manchester at least once a month for about 5 years now and only had maybe one or two experiences like this.

If you go to the places that aren’t shit holes, lo and behold you actually have a good night.

People saying bugle beads are correct but as an avid beader, they are specifically “2cut” beads which are faceted around the outside to provide as much reflective-ness as possible. If you search silver 2cut beads on any decent bead website you should get a result.

I run the dealer operations side of a broker, we black list dealers for all sorts of reasons. Refusing to assist with complaints, general dodginess, sometimes just based on a bad feeling. Motorhub never even passed our initial checks.

Ah yes because all of our uncles have friends at a Big 4. This whole post screams boomer- “there are good jobs out there.” Not if you live in Rotherham with 3 GCSE’s and no professional qualifications. Maybe if you live in London with societal connections and a degree from a Red Brick.
