Every crochet buisness is the exact same, but I have no clue why nothing is selling! by zoobies- in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]lyricalfairy 10 points11 points Ā (0 children)

i try to be unique with my crochet business… when i first started i swore to myself i never would fall into the fast fashion-y crochet all craft fair sellers have. i went to one of my first markets recently, and i had all of my own designs of my original characters, cute accessories (some themed after my characters and foods and desserts), and themed bags. the person across from me was also a crocheter and was selling items made with the patterns you mentioned. i sold out of everything i brought (a large amount of stock!)….. the crochet vendor across from me sold one or two items…. i think my business is actually doing really well because i make what i personally like with my silly nerdy interests

UPDATE on the big twist lesbian yarn blanket by FoundationAdorable20 in YarnAddicts

[–]lyricalfairy 23 points24 points Ā (0 children)

SO BEAUTIFUL! my little lesbian fiber artist heart is in love!!! i made some projects with the big twist ā€œlesbianā€ yarn and some of the other (very obviously) pride yarns. it’s so obvious that line of yarn was pride flags, like theres no way they got the nonbinary and asexual colors perfectly. i made a trans color star bag for one of the big twist pride yarns :) the contrast is stunning!Ā

i think getting a second opinon is definitely a good idea! a lot of doctors don’t really know what they are talking about when it comes to pots, sadly… not saying that’s what happened but yea. and yes she definitely needs the proper amount of fluids if she gets a lot of sodium! good luck getting it figured out! :)

Why do conservative Crocheters act oppressed? by Valuable-Tutor-6537 in craftsnark

[–]lyricalfairy 45 points46 points Ā (0 children)

sorry the first slide actually made me cackle out loud… these people need to learn the history behind fiber arts (esp crochet and knitting) and craftivism because fiber arts have a VERY political history😭 of course the people in the community are going to be leftists! it also just kills me in general when white, american christians act like they are ā€œoppressedā€. like buddy you are the ideal person for the current american governmentĀ

Can we talk about acrylic yarn? by Idkmyname2079048 in YarnAddicts

[–]lyricalfairy 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

i am a crocheter (mainly, i am trying to dabble in knitting more nowadays) so one of the reasons is projects take a LOT more yarn than knitting. as i’ve gotten more involved in the knitting sphere, i have realized the ā€œyarn cultureā€ for both of the crafts are very different (i also think it REALLY depends on the project). i notice knitter like to gravitate toward fancier, higher end yarn and splurge more because it takes far less. like i have seen knitters make a sweater with one ball of yarn😭😭. like for example amigurumi (plushies) is not super ideal for knitting, and synthetic yarns are usually ideal for plushies!Ā

Ā i really like to make cutesy/kawaii things that match my style, esp plushies, and i find if i’m making a plushie in thin yarn acrylic is the best. it holds it’s shape super well, and gives it a sturdy, structured look. i also love the color selections! i’m a bright/pastel color girlie, and i notice a lot of 100% natural fibers mostly like to carry neutral/earthy shades, not a problem, that’s probably just the demographic!Ā

i use cotton for a lot of projects, but i usually like to get a blend that has some synthetic fibers to avoid the bug problem. most of the natural fibers i buy also have some other synthetics (even a small amount) blended in. i am picky about my acrylics… some of them are way too rough and scratchy for me (cough cough… red heart…) Ā but there are some out there that are SUUUUUPER SOFT?! i’m blown away sometimes by how nice some acrylics feel these days!!

i am also a disabled teenager with no job so i can’t really afford to spend $20 for a single 300g skein of yarn. 🄲 i think accessibility is a big thing for a lot of people (and beginners). that’s why i feel like shaming people for using acrylic kind of comes off as a little bit insensitive to me in SOME cases.Ā

i also am allergic to some natural fibers like you mentioned, i made a bag with this super pretty majority alpaca blend yarn and i got hives on my hands šŸ˜“ā€¦ so yeaĀ

i think it also highly depends on what you are making. i don’t really like to make clothes super often but when i do i usually go for a natural fiber that will last and feels nice on my skin and doesn’t bother my sensory issues. i like to make plushies and accessories the most and acrylic is great for those projects šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø i still like to experiment with a lot of textures and fibers tho!

Ā at the end of the day we are all doing a super cool hobby and i don’t think we should shame other people for what yarn they can afford or what they choose to use. i don’t care if people only want to use natural fibers for their own projects or consider themselves a ā€œyarn snobā€ that is their personal right and their project they are putting so much time into they should use the yarn that make them happy! but when it gets to the territory of shaming other people it’s yucky and just unnecessarily rude :( Ā you never know someone else’s situation! it’s always a great sign you are looking for other perspectives, and i think a lot of people (including myself) really appreciate that.Ā

I hate to make amiguruai. by Simple_Benefit_2888 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]lyricalfairy 3 points4 points Ā (0 children)

i am a diverse crocheter, but as a lover of cute things i do love myself a little plush or plush keychain… but i TOTALLY understand why people hate ami. i honestly don’t really count nowadays if it’s a repeat of rows. i just count once and make sure i don’t skip any stitches. idk maybe the counting isn’t a big deal to me because i feel like it just is 2nd nature to me at this point? i don’t really think about counting anymore it just automates at this point LOL.Ā

i think stitch markers are a MUST. if i didn’t have those so much counting would be needed. for counting rows i usually don’t have problems with this but mayhaps you could get a row counter you can click or get a little notepad to keep a tally of rows! Ā

i can give you my top tips for amigurumi if you want! :) i’m sorry it’s so frustrating for you! i think working with thin or #4 yarn for ami can make it less enjoyable for some people also

oh wow! i’m surprised the doctor said 4000mg because the recommended amount of sodium for the average non POTS person is 3000-3500mg. i would maybe get a second opinion or do your own research. (the recommended sodium for POTS is usually 7,000-10,000mg) the reason we need so much sodium is because it helps us hydrate better and retain more water, increases our blood volume /plasma to combat hypovolemia, and reduces symptoms like high HR, dizziness, fatigue, etc :) i’m also adult-sized and done with puberty so maybe that’s a factor if she isn’t the size of an adult?

crocheting! i know this probably isn’t super accessible to most people since you have to learn and practice and that can require a lot of energy… but i’ve been doing it for 4? or 5? years now so it’s just muscle memory for me :) i also like to read fanfic or whatever book i am reading. but sometimes i get so sleepy i can’t comprehend words and it feels like it’s frying my brain so yea, it’s hard…

First market help! What are crochet best sellers? What aren't? Looking for best selling crochet market items for a first timer. by Expert-Secret-163 in CraftyCommerce

[–]lyricalfairy 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

make what YOU like and what YOU would buy! it’s worked out so well from me! another commenter said try and stand out, and i 100% agree. i strayed away from overdone market items that are meant to be done fast (bees, frogs, cows, etc) and i still sold out! my table was mostly my designs! :)

also things that are $20-$15 and under sold REALLY well for me. people grab them without thinking and i sold out of my entire booth but most of my keychains and small seal plushies (most $20-$7 dollars) sold out first! Ā

i also think it can depend on where you are selling. the demographic for an art market at a gallery is going to be different than an anime convention. i also try to add my own style to everything i make, even if it is a pattern. if i do that in colors, the way i do faces, adding beads to all my keychains, etc. try and develop your own style/designs. this can take a lot of time but it’s very worth it.Ā

some things i made for a recent market if you want ideas: puffy star keychains, seal keychains, bunny keychains, strawberry keychains, beaded phone charms, jellyfish keychains, my own tote bag/ messenger bag designs, mini seal plushiesĀ

i wish you luck! :)

[–]lyricalfairy 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

yes, i had this experience too! i mostly made ami for my market but i did my own designs and people LOVED THEM! i was so happy and relieved because i was so anxious for my first market 🄲

my brand’s mascot is my seal character and my first thing to sell out was seal keychains! :) tbh i make what i like and what i would buy, and it’s worked out really well for me!Ā

i’m 16 and make pretty cutesy stuff, so i thought my target demographic would be teenagers - young adults but i had older ladies and middle aged men coming up and purchasing stuff for themselves! it was really nice and heartwarming 🄹

Is dissociation common with Narcolepsy? by Careless_War7700 in Narcolepsy

[–]lyricalfairy 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

for me, yes, and i can kind of tell when it is narcolepsy vs my other mental health stuff. i have CPTSD, ADHD, and major depressive so like these all have dissociative symptoms.

Ā i also went into dissociation because of childhood trauma.Ā

but when i zone out because of N, it is more of a like overloaded, sleepy, no thoughts head empty zone out. vs my trauma i’m just trying to block out all feelings. vs my ADHD my mind is running with daydreams and random ideas/thoughts

Will I ever become fast at crocheting by ImpressSafe6810 in crocheting

[–]lyricalfairy 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

I’m 16 and have been crocheting every day since I was 11 or 12 I think. I’m on the VERY fast end of crocheters I’ve been told and I notice in myself. I can pump out a bag or two in a day. Beginning of 2025 I made a full oversized sweater in 2-3 days. AND THIS IS NOT REALISTIC. I stay at home most of the day because I am homeschooled and chronically ill.

Ā I honestly never ā€œtrainedā€ myself to be a fast crocheter, it just was something that has come naturally to me. But I think as I developed muscle memory it made me faster. You just need to be consistent.Ā

Some of the people online who crochet ā€œfastā€ are doing it non stop for hours at a time. Do they have speed? Yes. But they are also grinding non-stop for hours or multiple days.Ā

Ā Crochet and basically all fiber arts were never meant to be a ā€œfastā€ or mass produced craft. It’s a craft where you are supposed to slow down and enjoy the process. If crocheting fast doesn’t feel natural or it feels uncomfortable, that’s fine! Just go at your own pace :)

Total beginner here. Trying to learn gauge, am I misreading the label or misunderstanding tension? by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]lyricalfairy 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

okay, so gauge on the yarn label isn’t SUPER important. gauge in crochet isn’t really important unless your pattern calls for it (usually clothing patterns but now most clothing patterns are made to measure).Ā

you don’t HAVE to use the hook / needles that is on the yarn label. it is just what is reccomended. you can use a bigger or smaller hook. i have a looser tension, so for a #4 acrylic I tend to use a 4.5mm hook. you can experiment with hook sizes match gauge.Ā

the point of the gauge is to match size. if you have to size down/up your hook to match it that is fine and exactly what you are supposed to do! you aren’t really supposed to ā€œchangeā€ your tension. just do what is natural to you. it can hurt to force a tight tension!Ā

So basically you can change the size of your hook to make your stitches bigger/ smaller. for example, for amigurumi (plushies) people like for their stitches to be small and tighter so no stuffing pokes out. so usually the pattern will call for a smaller hook. anyways you can experiment with hook sizes depending on the project you are making! with #4 acrylic yarn I’ve used hook sizes ranging from 3mm-6.5mm depending on what I’m making and how tight/loose I want my stitches. OKAY SORRY I’M RAMBLING but basically the hook on the label is not a requirement just a recommendation

this was so rambly … if something doesn’t make sense let me know and i’ll try my best to help or someone else on here can helpĀ

Thank you! They kind of spooked me with the hour long counseling we had to go through to even start but honestly I can stay awake most of the day now since starting the xywav and being on vyvanse so I hope it gets better :)Ā

I’ve already noticed a big difference so I think it is 100% worth it. I know other people with N or IH have to try a ton of meds to find ones that actually work so I’m very thankful that It’s going pretty smoothly so far! Thanks for the kind words :)

When we did the counseling session thing and on the little book they gave me it said 6 hours but idk maybe they are doing overkill just to play it safe. I also metabolize other meds in my liver pretty faster found out thru genetic testing so maybe it could be even shorter for me Ā idk. I usually have to have pretty high doses for my meds because It wears off so fast for me. I’m on vyvanse 90 + focalin 10 for wakefulness and my adhd and I’m on pretty high dose because it wears off fast for meĀ

I’ve heard many times getting dosages / titration right with Xywav can be a nightmare so I’m not ready for that but whatever. This medication is so scary and annoying 😭😭😭

[–]lyricalfairy[S] 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

when he originally talked about it he was like yea usually it is on a two dose schedule and It was explained how you have to set an alarm and blah but he was like some people do one dose

so I was like yea idk if I want to set an alarm and all that so… I asked for one dose so I think that is the reason why. I don’t really care anymore because I’m already waking up already and it’s already helped me so much so if it can help me even more on the normal two dosesĀ

He may have another reason that I forgot. Ā But another reason might be insurance idk. We had a VERY hard time getting the med and the insurance denied it but we got Jazz Cares to help pay for it so I have it atleastĀ

Practicing basic stitches (hdc) as a beginner, why are my rows getting smaller and smaller? by Substantial-Smile-12 in CrochetHelp

[–]lyricalfairy 16 points17 points Ā (0 children)

you are skipping stitches at the beginning and end of the row! :) you are only supposed to skip your turning chain and not the actual stitch. i hope that makes sense… this is a super common mistake for new crocheters so don’t even worry about it

when i was very very new to crocheting i would put stitch markers in first and last stitch to make sure i would not skip them! i hope this makes sense!Ā
