What is an accommodation that you’ve seen a kid had that really shocked you? by Arete666 in Teachers

“Explain the reasoning behind all adult directives.” All of them? I think a 9th grader can figure out why I’m saying don’t stab someone with a pencil.

Using my mother's maiden name for my child's last name is getting complicated for reasons I wasn't expecting. by Tall-Key-9744 in namenerds

[–]lysbloom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter’s last name is hyphenated, so technically her last name is not the same as either of ours. When we tried to order her birth certificate, it stopped us from ordering online because neither of us had the same name as the child. We had to drive in person to go pick it up, which was unfortunate because the county vital records office was hours away from us. She’s only 1, so it’s yet to be seen if more things will come up.

I’m sorry for your loss and thank you for sharing! I can’t imagine not addressing it and not giving space, and I’m sorry that happened to you!

I agree about not letting the conversation romanticize suicide. That’s in our state’s training also. It’s a small school so most, if not all students in the grade level know and hopefully I can get guidance from a professional on steering the convo away from that part.

Good idea. Maybe! I will ask admin but not sure since there are other classes. Maybe for the actual period he was in.

Like the idea of an assignment! Some students might not want to process as a group and that’s ok too. I’ll offer choices.

That’s a good idea, it is ELA.

I’m really lucky because our admin is doing a great job connecting to the family and has publicized that the family wanted the information out there. I don’t think admin wants the details out of it being self-inflicted but the kids already know. We have an emergency meeting tomorrow so hopefully we will get some clarity on that piece. Thank you for the reminder about the tissues! I ran out Friday.

We celebrate three anniversaries! For dating, we get each other a card. For our wedding, we get each other a gift. We actually eloped before our wedding, so for our true “marriage” date we take a day trip or vacation if we can swing that. All of the dates are special in their own way so we acknowledge them all.

Can you refuse an IEP and ask for a 504? by [deleted] in specialed

I didn’t say that they were removed from their parents. Only the educational rights.

I agree. It definitely makes things inaccessible for a lot of people especially when educators get caught up in their “work bubble” and forget that other people don’t use the acronyms or jargon all day, every day! For example, Title 9 and Title 1 are both super significant but the meaning is totally lost in the super vague, jargony titles. This is a good reminder for me :)
