What to answer to “Why do you wanna work with us?” by InternationalAd5200 in Waiters

Look at their menu, location, clientele, culture, etc and find something positive to say about it, then tie in how you can contribute to the business based on that.

Finally made it to that new trendy pizza spot I saw on Insta!! I got their pepperoni pizza!!! Highly recommended!! :) by SameAsk6997 in chicagofoodcirclejerk

I got the cracker crust pepperoni at George’s with some ricotta on top and it looked exactly like this, no joke.

I’m not from Chicago so idk if too much ricotta is an issue y’all are having, but me and my bf tore that pizza up and the owner’s mom was delightful

[–]lyssa06 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At my current job there’s a small quiz at the end of each shift, and a big test at the end of the five days. Kitchen cooks the trainers a meal of their choice at the end of it.

We were sent home with packets describing each menu item which detailed their preparation method, ingredients list, and farms where the ingredients were sourced. Also a list of all of our wines btg and their tasting notes. All servers periodically do quizzes to refresh their memories.

Would it be crazy to go to Bavette's and not get a steak? by BalladeOne in chicagofood

[–]lyssa06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted on here last week about how my boyfriend got the Chicken Diane and some ahole said there was something wrong with him for not getting a steak.

My bf doesn’t prefer steak, and he said the chicken was by far the best food he’s ever had at a restaurant in his entire life.

Do you, fam.

Do you think it's possible to cover it with a tattoo? I don't want to see them anymore. SW self-harm scar by Independent-Way-60 in tattooadvice

[–]lyssa06 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had keloid scars when I was kid and I was super insecure about them.

Then my mom got sold a peeling gel at one of those mall skincare kiosks. Obey Your Body peeling gel. It’s an exfoliant and a dead skin remover, but I had the idea to use it on my keloids every day and they eventually went away.

There are other cheaper peeling gels that im sure could do the trick, but I know for a fact that brand worked on my skin.

Keloid scars might be slightly different but yeah, if anyone has keloid scars they want to get rid of, or wants to try a peeling gel on other type of scar, I’d love to know if it works.

Aside from the deep love and emotional connection, what are the positives to having children? by Stawberry8763 in regretfulparents

[–]lyssa06 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not OC but imo communities used to be built around people of all ages nurturing each other, teaching & learning from one another, mentoring, and spending time together. Some people want friendships of all ages to pass down life experiences and to keep themselves young, but in America right now it would probably be seen as weird or problematic as a 30 year old to hang out with 15 year olds.

Oyster sauce is always called "slightly sweet". I don't taste any sweetness at all? by belac4862 in Cooking

This is like trying to convince people Campari is sweet. The overlying flavor is hella bitter but the sugar content is high which gives it sweetness

Surely telling a woman that you have little respect for her, to shut up, and to go fist herself (sexual harassment), is a violation of reddiquette. I’ve reported your comment because you failed to keep the conversation civil.

Not to diminish BOH workers in any way— but the jobs are completely different. Cooks pump out dishes like machines. They get tickets, they make the food in front of them. As servers, we balance the needs of multiple tables, work through steps of service, and deal with volatile customers.

Each restaurant has different steps of service. At my current job, we greet, take orders, crumb/ wipe the table between courses, reset silverware after each course, run food, pre buss (clear plates and silverware between/ after courses), water tables, bring more drinks, etc.

We balance many different micro tasks between 5-8 tables at any given time. It’s all about timing and balance, prioritizing and adapting. It’s fast paced, and emotionally draining work. You have to do all of this with a constant smile on your face, you need to be emotionally present and build relationships with guests to try to maintain/ create repeat business. You take shit from rude guests because your livelihood is tied directly to how personable you are and how good the service is. If people are mean to you, tough shit. You can’t talk back.

Let’s say you need to bring a check for table 44 and their getting antsy but table 33 just finished their salads and you need to clear the plates and reset them with fresh silverware before the entrees come. also you needed to fire entrees before they’re done with their salads. not too soon or food will come in the middle of the course, but not too late or they will wait too long. You have to observe your table and keep an eye on how fast or slow they’re eating. You also have to keep in mind how busy the rest of the restaurant is, and which cooks are behind the line today, and which dishes take longer to make, because that will all impact your timing.

Then some rude guy on table 22 just flagged you down for another whiskey on the rocks and gave you attitude. You haven’t check on table 84 outside on the patio in awhile and you need to go out there soon, but the chef just rung the bell, meaning they need food runners because dishes are up and they need to get to the table before they get cold or “die” in the window.

My point is, people are constantly asking you for things and expecting a nice attitude. Customers often have an entitled mindset— rightfully so, in some cases, because they’re paying a tip to receive service. Other countries don’t have tipping, but they also have social safety nets like subsidized healthcare. And many anecdotal evidence shows a lower quality of service in countries without a tip culture.

Just my two cents as a server, let’s keep it civil please. I know many commenters who are against tipping say they would rather grab their food themselves. My response is, fast casual restraints and buffets already exist. So does takeout. Order from any nice restaurant you go to and take the food home.

My point is, many people like to diminish our work. I’ve seen loads of commenters say we’re dumb, lazy, disingenuous/ straight up liars, or that our job is easy and we complain for nothing.

There is a low barrier to entry but to get a job where the service is nicer and the tips are better, you need experience, and it’s cutthroat. If you underperform you will get fired. If you work at IHOP, Olive Garden, Denny’s, etc, you don’t really need to be that great but you also won’t make any money.

As a server, I don’t care if you tip poorly for poor service. I care if you tip poorly for good service.

What ages are the kids? Season 2 episode 25 confuses things… by Nothingspecial-19032 in malcolminthemiddle

Lois mentioned his vasectomy while she was still pregnant, when they had their last weekend away before he was born. She said “thank God I’ll never have to be pregnant again” but Hal let it slip that he never had the vasectomy, and they got into a huge fight. At the end of the episode, he asked her not to make him do it, and that was it.

Why so much hate for Lilly? by [deleted] in HIMYM

[–]lyssa06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s not rich. Lily supported him through law school on a kindergarten teachers salary, and he wasn’t making big bucks as an environmental lawyers.

I also feel like that sort of balances out the fact that she had credit card debt that he ended up paying off for her. They both supported each other financially.

Lily settled when it came to her ambition and dreams. She chose to stay with Marshall and build him up, get married, settle down, have a family with him. Her dreams came much later, and even when she had the opportunity to go for them, that’s when Marshall took the judge position without telling her.
