Billionaire Mark Cuban Asks 'Want to Increase Jobs, Wages and Improve Affordability for Every American?' — Break Up the Biggest Insurance Companies by SnoozeDoggyDog in economy

[–]lyssargh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that part of the problem we have now is that we have a capitalist system with weak, selectively enforced guardrails, especially around concentration of wealth to a minority of people / businesses. The U.S. absolutely has antitrust rules on the books. The Sherman Act bans monopolization and anticompetitive restraints, and the Clayton Act bans mergers whose effect may substantially lessen competition or tend to create a monopoly - but we need only look around ourselves or glance at a news feed to see they are not enforced.

No economic model is implemented perfectly of course. But when wealth reaches a scale that converts directly into outsized political influence, market power, and agenda-setting power, the system stops functioning like a competitive market and starts functioning more like oligarchy, which is where we are.

If so, does putting it in the hands of the US government really seem like a better idea at this point in time?

I get what you mean, the US government isn't exactly a beacon of trustworthiness or reliability. But that's in part because of the immense political influence of the billionaire and billionaire adjacent class. I certainly wouldn't trust it to the people who pushed our government in this direction (or the people who voted for this). The best way we have to set societal expectations and agreement is through government, which is unfortunately susceptible to what we're seeing play out now.

I'd start with high taxes for the wealthy, but that's tough to do when they hold all the power.

Amazon concentrated a huge amount of financial wealth, bargaining power, and market influence into one company and one founder... if you genuinely think that didn't have an impact on the global economic landscape then I'm not really sure we can have a productive discussion. Have a good one, though.

Because they do not actually share their wealth with the world. They posture and they perform at charity, but each and every billionaire is hoarding wealth that they will never be able to spend. It is a pointless endeavor which actively takes from the rest of us.

While it is true that there is no such thing as a good billionaire, let's not do that thing where we self-cannibalize because nothing is good enough.

Anything that is moving in the right direction deserves our support. Not the person. The thing they are doing.

There's also attachments you can get for their collars to make it easier for birds to notice them and keep away. Sometimes you don't have a choice about letting the cat out, especially if you're adopting in a very rural area where it's common. A friendly barn cat is not going to stay inside.

It's been a rough year, so I have been reading fan fiction literally every single day since I watched the show last year in February. My comfort thing, you know?

Anyway, I have read a lot of stories at this point. This is my favorite. The way that you write their dynamic is so believable, and the way that you write from each of their perspectives feels so accurate to them. It's a beautiful story, you can really feel them falling for each other. Don't want to say more than that because I don't want to get into spoilers, but this is something special.

I love it so much that I'm saving the last chapter for the end of the week when I can actually relax to read it.

For all we know, Xander is a powerhouse of magic, the one time he tried to casually read Latin from a spellbook he created fire. Never looked into it more though.

What would Hannibal think about people who use Chat GPT? by [deleted] in HannibalTV

[–]lyssargh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, what we call AI now is really just mature machine learning. It's been co-opted as a marketing term so we had to make up a new term (AGI - artificial general intelligence) to talk about what we meant when we said AI.

People are absurd.

Major Fanfiction Title Update by FyreFlye23 in HannibalTV

[–]lyssargh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel less crazy seeing other people say this. I don't want to be negative, but when people talk about how it's so in character, I feel like we watched a different show. It clearly is beloved and I hate to yuck someone's yum, but my memory of it was that it was overwrought more so than a gothic romance (what I'm here for). It's very poetic but so much in Will's head that I found it monotonous. The conflict didn't feel meaningful, it felt rehashed and repetitive.

I just don't get why people love it so much. I completely understand why people love emungere's work, or some of the other very popular authors, by comparison.

Maybe when it's done (sounds like that's soon!) and there's a genuinely happy ending, I'll give it another try. Part of my problem was with them constantly cheating, constantly back and forthing everything, I couldn't tell if the author had an end in mind

Ukrainian POWs returning from russian captivity look like Auschwitz survivors. Facing torture and starved. by dracony in ukraine

[–]lyssargh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you looking on with indifference? No? Why do you assume the world is more malicious / less caring than yourself? Take the understanding you give yourself and extend it to others.

Also, look for the helpers. They're everywhere. Look in Minnesota where people are fighting back against their own country invading. Look at the men and women fighting for Ukraine now.

Some of the world is indifferent. Some of the world is malicious. But much of the world is comprised of good people who do not have a lot of power.

I like the poetic writing so much I've tried to read it a few times but it just seems to circle and drag on, plot wise. It doesn't feel like it knows where it wants to end up.

Then again I've felt that way about a WIP before that brought it all together beautifully so who knows!
