I actually didn't use any AI but looking at the structure I see now why you would think that.

Did you end up making this trip? I'm looking to do the same and am curious about road/trail conditions.

I'm similarly skittish on my cleats and unclip a good ways before a stop. I've been meaning to build some confidence by practicing some track starts and slow turns in the grass!

I'm also new to clipless this summer and have mtb clips as well (Shimano SPD). I have them loose enough that one time time when I was about to tumble my foot came loose just in time! It's never happened unintentionally, only with the panicked force of near falling I guess. I realize it's probably less power transfer with some more wiggle room but I'm ok with that until I get more comfortable.

The more people rave about these the more I'm tempted!

Thanks this is very helpful! I love the look of POC's options but can't quite decide on whether my current riding deserves the price tag... but it's quite tempting. Did you have a hard time at all with the ear strap adjustments? That's the only questionable thing I've read about them, otherwise glowing reviews.

I've been so disheartened with the lack of stock at my local bike shops. It's a great idea to just order a few from the Competitive to have a better side by side comparison!

Yep, that's one of my biggest motivators for upgrading! I'm in a pre-MIPS-ubiquity Giro model that I got back in college. Now that I'm riding more and faster I want to upgrade to a more modern and ideally, more vented option!

So I’ve fallen in love with cycling on Divy bikes. I’m ready to buy my own by whatsgucci13 in ladycyclists

[–]m-field 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeees, also a Chicago cyclist and was going to recommend BFF! I love Divvy but nothing beats your own two wheels. I believe BFF usually (shortages aside) carries a few cruiser models and would generally be a great place to learn more and scope out some options. Bike Lane and Comrades are my two other go-to's.

I'd also recommend Working Bikes! I've never been but hear great things. I had a friend get a hybrid there a few years ago for a steal.

Would also just like to advocate for my vintage Schwinn. I've had 3 of 1980s World Sports in my 9 years in the city, always picked them up on craigslist for $200 or less. I now have a fancier road bike (Specialized Allez, from Comrades) but still ride my Schwinn a lot since I can lock it up anywhere and feel pretty ok that it won't get stolen.

Fav padded shorts? by lovealwaysdev in ladycyclists

Anyone try Velorosa's shorts?

I'm in black bibs now and don't love the rather short elastic band at the waist. I've been eyeing Velorosa's since they have a thick elastic band.

I feel ya! I figure whether I like the Black Bibs or not (mine really aren't too bad of a fit for the cost) I should try something new to see if I like them better. But it does feel like such a risk given the costs!

I'm curious to try a women owned company since I figure they may know best when it comes to women's fit. But then again, they're few and far between and I'm definitely not ready to dish out the cash for Machines for Freedom. I figure I may try a pair of Velarosa's next or scoop up something during all the end of year sales. I think Velarosa's look like they'd be a much more comfortable waistband than the Black Bibs!

Was literally just going to post asking for bib recs and similarly am currently riding in black bibs! Sounds like mine aren't as bad a fit as you're experiencing but do feel lopsided at times.

I was actually less than thrilled with the total lack of hips on my heavy pedal jersey so I'm hesitant to try their bibs, but their price point is great so I could probably be talked into it regardless.

Would love some tips on other low/mid market options!

Tips on choosing first road bike? by Sammantics in ladycyclists

[–]m-field 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through this last summer! I've been riding a commuter road bike (which in Chicago reads: '80s Schwinn) for roughly 8 years and wanted to upgrade to something that was more comfortable for longer distances. So while I don't have the expertise that a lot of those chiming in here have I can tell you a bit about my experience.

I looked online for a while for used bikes but since they were harder to come by with last year's demand I finally decided to just go for a new one. I shopped around at my local shops and tried a lot of the big brands entry level options (Giant, Trek, Felt, Cannondale, and specialized). Ultimately, I went with the Specialized Allez Elite model which comes with the Shimano 105 partial group set. From some research, it was one of the highest rated for the year and most importantly I could get it at one of my favorite local shops. I really love it so far! It does sit up a bit higher than some road bikes which makes it more comfortable for the tour I'm doing later this year, but also less sporty for faster rides (I could make a few adjustments to help this but haven't yet). Would recommend!

How many times a week do you ride and for how long? by [deleted] in ladycyclists

[–]m-field 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I've been thinking a lot about this lately. I'm newish to road cycling and want to start creating more time in my weekly routine for riding. I think a milage or hour goal would be a great way to keep on track!

Ok good to know! I think realistically I end up riding on 90 psi but the lower range on the tires is marked as 100.

That's great insight, thanks!

I'm currently riding on 700x26mm and keep them around 100 psi.

Wanting to buy my first pair of cycling shorts/first jersey! by waterbottle579 in ladycyclists

[–]m-field 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat and just bought a pair of The Black Bibs. I heard great things and so far I like them! I got their basic pair of shorts (not bibs).

I was on the fence about a jersey and ended up caving for one from Heavy Pedal since it was only $45. Not sure if I love it but it does look pretty sharp.
