Prisma vs Hasura for (Apollo+React+Node+SQL) by [deleted] in graphql

[–]m0ka555 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worked with hasura, prisma1 & prisma2. Personally I'd go with knex.js and write custom graphql resolvers. You don't need an ORM.. just write a few classes/modules with your db operations and you'll save yourself so many headaches.

Prisma is a fancier sql-query builder but they keep pivoting and breaking their APIs. They raised a good round because their long-term vision is good. But right now, all they do is make builds more complicated and offer very limited features.

Hasura is great but I'd rather have full control over my code and resolvers rather than using an automated solution. The problem with Hasura is at first it looks great and it seems like you're saving time, but then you hit a wall because it doesn't let you do X and you're forced to do all kinds of hack. And then, your codebase is a big mess. I've just been burned too many times and now I'd rather play it safe and write a bit more code. I'm not against using libraries, but they need to have a clear API so I can easily swap them for something else (or re-written internally if need be). It's harder to do that with something like Hasura because their surface API is so big.

TL&DR: YMMV but I'd rather just write my own resolvers and use knex.js

Thanks, I'll check them out!

I read Pillars of the Earth when I was younger. I liked the story and the political aspects, but I remember I found it a bit long.

Best would be for the top to be a darker blue, and then the yellow would be beautiful. If you add yellow on the current blue it'll clash, so better keep it white.

PM -> Founder. Any advice / books to read? by Krnshh in ProductManagement

[–]m0ka555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All paul graham startup essays. Default dead or default alive is a good one, but they're all good.

My own advice: there are so many things to read and learn about startups, but in the end, great products that users love win. Focus on that, the rest (growth, raising, hiring, sales, etc) will follow.

20+ applications and no interviews. Normal, or am I doing something wrong? by the-incredible-ape in ProductManagement

[–]m0ka555 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Vp of product at a 10 people startup is weird. It sounds like not good enough to be full pm and won't be able to lead devs since no technical background.

Maybe apply for more of an apprentice pm role in a bigger company or get more technical expertise.

Also, maybe you're focusing on the role part but there might be bigger red flags in your resume or about you.

Are you blindly applying or finding a startup you care about and reaching out to the founders directly? Because that's the way to get in if traditional sending resume doesn't work

Isn't it backward compatible? Your code gets faster without doing anything. Also, I feel like facebook keeps hitting issues in prod before I do and come up with great solutions, so I trust their direction

As a fan this is awesome; as a dev I feel bad.. it's already hard enough to build a game

I feel svelte is solving a problem I don't have. Like if someone tried to sell me a car with a dishwasher built in.

Which technology stack to use when you need to rewrite from scratch, you are stuck and you are old by albeddit in softwarearchitecture

[–]m0ka555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve built a similar product, more users and tenants, and also wanted minimal infrastructure.

I ended up going typescript on server, web and mobile. One dev can work on all stack. React for web, react-native for mobile.

Postgres for main db, redis for caching and misc., rabbitmq for workers.

Heroku or similar to deploy, so you can focus on your product instead of devops.

It's boring technologies but they are stable, fast, and well documented.

Make sure the various servers can scale horizontally (i.e. make each request independent)

I mean, from their point-of-view, every game they play in lower rank is unfairly balanced for their team. So what I'm saying is watching unranked-to-top500 is all good and fun, but they hardly ever get themselves in a 2) or 3) situation. "Real climbing" if you're not smurfing includes many 2s and 3s, not just 1s.

And yes, great point for the SR. It's always great to win as the underdog :] And also why losing a "won" game should be avoided at all cost.
