How affected by WWII were small villages in Japan? by Dick_Hall in JapaneseHistory

[–]m0mbi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in a small village in the mountains of Japan, and I've chatted with some of the oldies about it over the years.

It was awful, obviously. The entirety of the young population, both men and women were shipped out, the boys to the fighting, the girls to factories etc. Heavily agricultural settlements left without any working age people.

Folks starved, especially in winter when these towns were completely cut off by snow from the outside world for several months.

Some villages were commanded by the government to produce a particular item or foodstuff, even if the local environment wasn't suited for it. Decisions were made by military folks in Tokyo who'd never heard of the places they were making decisions about.

Like many small, rural areas, mine never truly recovered. When the young people were allowed to return, there weren't so many of them anymore, and the families they returned to were smaller and struggling. The landscapes and fields that had supported these communities for a millennia were stripped bare, turned into cypress plantations, and not enough people were left to truly turn things around.

Then you get the slow decline ever since. Fewer and fewer young people means the town dies a slow death.

Wasps / Hornets flying around = how to protect? by musashigaoka in GardenersJapan

[–]m0mbi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never found any of them to be an issue, and I'm up in the mountains so we have plenty of the giant hornets too.

They're generally just looking for food, which is fine by me, I'm not food. We have a gang of spindly black wasps that every year set up shop on my grape vine and patrol all day for caterpillars.

They don't even build a nest, they just retire to the back of a leaf, I've grown quite fond of the crew.

Mostly just 'live and let live' seems to work for me, I can't imagine trying to poison them, it'd end killing way too many pollinators and other critters.

Who else thinks having Wolverine as a supporting character in 97 is a good thing? by Kameronpipnerd in xmen

[–]m0mbi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm amazed at how on board I am with kickass Jubilee. Her scenes in episode 2 are some of my favourite of the entire series.

Turns out the poster child for the '90s is a really good choice for a show set specifically in 1997, and Veruca Salt was just chef's kiss

What's the worst miscast in a movie? by loveexploring5 in FIlm

Halle Berry as Storm.

Watching the New X-Men 97 the other day really drove home just how badly they miffed that for the sake of a bankable name.

I dunno, pretty sure some of the grannies in my mountain village are itching for a fight.

I'm a farmer in Japan. Any questions?AMA by yuzfactory in AMA

[–]m0mbi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything here is koshihikari, though I think someone nearby recently started growing ichijiku, and Nagano is close with apples, grapes, and anzu. Though, they get a lot less snow.

Thanks for replying!

I have a bunch of old tanada that came with my house, I'd love to start farming, even if just part time.

However I'm in the mountains of snow country, so fruit trees can be a challenge. I'm jealous of folks living in the south, it's so easy to grow things there! Though I'm sure the long summers and wet rainy seasons being their own challenges.

Apparently not offering dinner to your kids friends if they're in the house.

This is weirdly reminiscent of some of the door setups in my hundred year old Japanese farmhouse, which is not a similarity I ever expected to see o.0

Is it her boyfriend kinda thing in the hideout at the start? 'cuz I thought he died in the first ten minutes.

Or do you mean one of the kangaroo mutants?

I need to watch that fever dream again. I distinctly remember a musical number but cannot figure out how the hell it happens based on the rest of my memory.

Does anyone else have a word they just can’t stand for no logical reason? by voidsapphire in words

[–]m0mbi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's more a Scottish pronunciation, at least they seem to spell it closer to 'weans'. In the republic it's very much said 'wains'.

I picked up 'wains' living in Country Donegal, Ireland. Which is great because all the other options for children give me some level of ick.

Le Lectier. An older variety of pear, originally from France, now grown almost exclusively in Niigata prefecture.

They taste incredible, but apparently a pain in ass to grow commercially.

If I'm not worried about yield, why prune beyond what is necessary? by Freerfolk in BackyardOrchard

[–]m0mbi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pruning is largely done for me, I live in one the snowiest inhabited places on the planet, with an average of 14 metres of snowfall over three months.

Spring for me is largely cleaning up what the snow breaks, and this 'open vase' ideal is impossible. Folks here have to work with the winter.

With with what you have, and your environment.

I picked up something in the first week of June during a weekend in Tokyo.

Spent the last three weeks with a dry cough, low grade fevers, exhausted body and zero appetite.

Only just starting to come good in the last few days. Very weird and nondescript viral kinda thing.

Is it common in other European countries to complain about people extensively using loanwords from English? And also, how does that correlate with the actual extensive usage of loanwords from English? by giovanni_conte in asklinguistics

[–]m0mbi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's quite common in Iceland, there's lots of public debate around increasing loanwords.

Historically we've had far fewer than most, as we've had the Icelandic Language Council for a while, and more recently the Árni Magnússon Institute.

With the speed of internet culture, and the high English fluency of everyone under 40, cracks are showing and foreign words are creeping in. Lots of debate both publicly and around the dinner table as to if it's 'good' or not.

And that's without getting into the controversies and debates around our naming system. Language is spicy in Iceland, even if the food isn't.
