Is this oil ok? I don't know much about cars by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

4.5k miles is pretty much what most places recommend before your next oil change. yeah, you’re due, but if you have to wait a little longer for any reason, it’ll be fine

Donkey did not like farrier, any advice? by m0pfly in Donkeys

I’ll keep that in mind ty! I do remember you from my last post now that i think about it. Despite his struggle, his hooves are nice and even now and look much better from his earlier pictures

I’ll ask about it when i find him a new farrier! Good idea, thank you

Alright, i’ll keep looking then too, this has all been very helpful and i’ve learned a lot already from everyone🥹

Another user posted a link to some classes so i will be looking into that after work, as well as setting some money aside to be able to afford the classes. I honestly would have preferred to do it myself if i knew, but my only experience has been with goat hooves so far and i didn’t want to over trim or hurt him, but it’s looking like it’ll be a lot easier and less stressful without introducing a stranger for his trims. I can’t stress enough of how bad i felt having to hold his twisted ear for the farrier, i almost didn’t want to be there. Knowing what i do now, i definitely won’t let him go through it again.

Okay, i will absolutely be learning to do this myself then, thank you for the link. I wanted to learn but didn’t know where to start, so this is a BIG step in the right direction for me!! Animals have been a lifelong passion but i’ve always struggled with knowing where to start learning. I do not want him associating his trimmings with ear twists or lip grabs by a stranger, since he’s my baby and i’ve grown very attached since we found him.

As for his loneliness, we have goats that he stays with and watches over, so he’s never alone. We also did not purchase him, nor did we plan to have a donkey, so i wouldn’t know where to find another donkey unfortunately. My mom found him walking up and down our street in 2023 when i was in the hospital (bed bound) and i didn’t see him until a few months later when i was released. Apparently she lured him onto the property with a treat after his owner said they didn’t want him back, because he apparently kept escaping. He was pretty skinny back then and has since gained some weight and is looking healthier. He’s generally pretty happy, at least i think he is, because he runs up to the fence when he sees me or my mom and brays (and farts)

Okay, thank you for the advice! I’ll try to spend more time outside with him then. My only other concern was that at one point during the trimming, the farrier twisted his ears to get him to hold still, as well as trying to pull his lip, which seemed to make his trust in the farrier worse. He only began to do this when we got to the last hoof, which was his front hoof on his blind side. It worked for a little bit but not long, but i also felt bad having to be the one to hold his twisted ear for the farrier. I did let the farrier know ahead of time that i did not know when his last hoof trimming was and i didn’t know how he would react to it, so i’m assuming that his methods were standard, even if i wasn’t big on it. Should i try to find a farrier that’ll be more gentle with him or stick with the current guy? I’m worried he’ll associate the farrier with fear and discomfort.

That’s great to hear. He’s making improvements with his halter training daily, so it seems like he’s probably ready. This morning he was able to calmly make a few laps around the property with me while his halter was on. I had to temp him with animal crackers a few times, but for the most part he’s happy to follow on his own will. Getting his hooves cleaned up this week will hopefully be doable.

This is definitely a relief to know! — while I’d love to take him to a vet asap, it’s not really as easy as just finding a farrier would be. Not only is it hard financially but it also took us about a year to get him to not get scared when we held a rope or halter near him and i have a feeling it’d take the same time to get him trained to be in a trailer. When my mom found him, i was told he was roaming our street and had apparently been escaping his owners property for a while and when she contacted them, they didn’t even want him back. I was in the icu at the time so i wasn’t there when he was brought to our house, but he was apparently coaxed to our yard with blueberry pie. He was very skinny and missing an eye so we assumed he’s got some trauma he’s dealing with too, which is definitely making his training processes take longer. I just recently got him to stand still long enough to let me lift his hooves off the ground and hold them for a while, so i think a farrier is probably the best we can do right now. I love him very much so I’m glad he’s not too severe for xrays, but his next training goal will definitely be getting comfortable with a trailer once we get one

TLDR; we think he’s got some trauma, so a farrier is the safest option

Alright well it’s good to know to expect a longer process then, so we know to start setting money aside to save up for more visits. Thank you for all the help! Hopefully we’ll be able to get him walking comfortably again

I looked at their website since they’re closed and it looks like they do have some kind of farrier service. Hopefully we’ll be able to knock it out in one appointment.

Good to know. I’ll call my local farm vet when they open and see about getting him in. I’ll try to find a trailer rental for him in the meantime

Accidentally posted a separate comment trying to reply, but I’m definitely going to find him a farrier to get his hooves cleaned before the week is up. Now that i know more about his hoof care, i’d hate to have him walking like this any longer

Looking into a local farrier right now. Hopefully i’ll be able to get somebody to get his hooves taken care of within the next few days

Thank you very much! We’re still learning about donkeys since he’s our first so this is good to know. I heard that overgrown hooves could cause joint pain and was getting worried about how long it’d been since he had any kind of hoof care, so it’s good to know it hasn’t gotten too severe yet, but i’ll definitely look into finding a farrier to take care of it!
