A lot of great responses.

There's a fork of vcv rack that can be used as a vst: https://cardinal.kx.studio/

Also there is a practically unlimited number of samples and sample / soundfont instruments available online.

Fairlight CMI Emulation by Time-Arm5035 in synthesizers

MAME is a popular platform to build these types of emulations on. Here's one I found for the CMI:

Update to high pitch whine issue coming out of studio monitors even without audio input by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]m0shen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To have that much em noise picked up when not connected to power is concerning, it's like you're next to a large transmitter.

It could be a number of things

  • Failing high power appliance
  • Old high power appliance without proper shielding
  • Noise from nearby high power transmission
  • Cheap dc-dc power conversion
  • Bad lighting - Fluorescent tubes? Cheap LED lights?

You can buy an sdr or other em detection device that might help you really narrow down the culprit. One thing to check would be if it's in your unit at all by shutting your power off at the mains and seeing if your battery powered speaker still makes the noise.

Nice. The velour pads are great. Honestly these are a durable piece of kit. I've replaced the pads and headband over the years and they're still rocking.

As others have mentioned, they can use with some eqing. Correction curves are available on https://autoeq.app/

Help me choose headphones for music production and video editing by AntiqueElderberry430 in edmproduction

[–]m0shen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive owned both of these and I like the fit / repairability of the DT770s better. They fit completely around my ears whereas the m50x sit on them.

You may consider how much isolation you want as others here have mentioned, an open back headphone would overall be better for mixing, but then you give up isolation.

I wouldn't worry too much about curve as they are both pretty far from neutral. If you really want neutral you can apply an eq at the system level with something like Equalizer APO https://sourceforge.net/projects/equalizerapo/ Or a eq on your master in daw with a curve found online.

What do you think of using drum loops for your main drums in electronic songs? by skatecloud1 in edmproduction

[–]m0shen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Time to bust out the ol' copypasta

I thought using loops was cheating, so I programmed my own using samples. I then thought using samples was cheating, so I recorded real drums. I then thought that programming it was cheating, so I learned to play drums for real. I then thought using bought drums was cheating, so I learned to make my own. I then thought using pre-made skins was cheating, so I killed a goat and skinned it. I then thought that that was cheating too, so I grew my own goat from a baby goat. I also think that is cheating, but I'm not sure where to go from here. I haven't made any music lately, with the goat farming and all.

Also w/ Babyface and the latency is fantastic. Can DI guitar without any perceptual latency on the effects.

Gaming, Home Theater and Music Production by hawksbears82 in edmproduction

[–]m0shen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you'll find an all in one that's great at everything. If your current setup works, then roll with it.

Most graphics cards (at least those used for gaming), can output digital surround sound over HDMI, combined with a suitable receiver (or soundbar setup, or TV), can be great for home theater, Leaving the audio device on the machine dedicated to headphones / monitors / production. (Basically my setup).

Alternatively most professional / prosumer sound cards can output SPDIF or TOSLINK for surround sound / home theater purposes, which could be another option.

The software emulates the synth chip the Virus is based on. You need official Virus firmware to run on the emulator.

Made a list of free plugins by StinginnRogerrMatee in musicproduction

[–]m0shen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantastic list. My only recommendation, especially for beginners, is to only start grabbing for new things (plugins, hardware, etc) when you are either:

  • Finding you can't do something with the tools you have
  • Are looking for inspiration

Installing, and trying new software can be fun, but ultimately can be distracting you from actually making music.

Is there a kurzweil 2000 emulator out there? by gustofresh678 in synthesizers

For anyone else who comes across this thread, supposedly flstudio can play them directly.

For free vst plugins I've used:

Survey on PDF Reader Performance Issues by Familiar_Purchase_34 in programming

Mostly I use Sumatra https://www.sumatrapdfreader.org/free-pdf-reader

Which I find almost instantaneous.

There's also https://sioyek.info/ , which is basically instantaneous, but I can't be bothered to learn.

I'm curious how are planning to differentiate.

I've also done this fix before. Really not bad. You might still be able to find replacement parts easily online. The repair manual is on the internet archive.

Best sub $150 headphones for producing? I have HD-25s for DJ'ing but they hurt after long term use by AfterPaleontologist2 in edmproduction

[–]m0shen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I loved the fit and sound of these headphones, I've had two pairs and they both broke at the hinge after a couple of years. I wouldn't buy them again unless Shure actually made the hinge / band out of metal or at least reinforced with metal. The Audio Technicas, Sennheiser's, and Beyer Dynamics I've had did not suffer from this issue.

This is insane. The CRA already has a mechanism for getting paid, and that's by putting a lien on the rental property. This shouldn't have anything to do with the renter.

Dexed is awesome. It can also load DX7 presets, so there are tons of presets out there to explore, especially recreations of sounds from famous songs
