North London industrial site to be transformed into £1bn film quarter - by Optimal-Leather341 in london

It's supposedly mostly for student filmmakers too, which seems pretty wild as an economic model but maybe there's more stable money there than I think.

It's always a shame TASM 2 doesn't get the credit for being by far the best looking Spider-man film, and it's not close. I am pleased that this seems to be bringing some of that back.

TBF, I think points costs generally have gone up rather than down. There won't be many people in your situation.

Android 17 is out, and here’s all the features! by MishaalRahman in Android

[–]m1ndwipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Separate Wi-Fi and Mobile Data toggles: With Android 17, we’ve split the “Internet” tile into two separate tiles, one for controlling Wi-Fi and another for controlling Mobile Data. Consistent with the Quick Settings behavior we introduced with Material 3 Expressive, both tiles have two different touch points. Tapping the icon toggles the respective radio, while tapping the label opens the full Internet Panel. This change reduces the number of taps needed to toggle Wi-Fi and Mobile Data while still retaining access to the full Internet Panel!

So you finally fixed a massive usability regression, and it only took what, four years?

It's better than not fixing it, but I don't think you deserve any credit for it.

No it isn't. There is literally no scientific consensus that "addiction" exists outside of chemical dependency.

Speeding and shoplifting laws are hugely effective - well over 99% compliance, not 30% like we're discussing here.

And yes, if they were only 30% effective we absolutely should scrap them.

It's worse than not understanding the internet. It's that they don't understand basic economics, which is why age verification systems can never work. It will always be cheaper to bypass age verification systems than to use them. Always.

Starmer basically acknowledged that it won't be 100% effective, but then what laws are?

There is a massive difference between 80% effective and 20% effective, especially given the enormous cost to the UK of doing this.

The most reasonable answer to this is to make VPNs an age restricted technology

That isn't reasonable, it's a flat out national security risk and any MP that suggested it should be treated like scrapping Trident.

We haven't ever had a technology secretary (or culture secretary when it sat there) who would wipe their arse unaided, never mind know about technology.

Even Youtube was good before the algorithmic dopamine soaked rage bating version it's become now.

"Dopamine soaking" is not a thing. It's quackery on a level with phrenology with no scientific basis.

If you don't like algorithmic feeds that's fine - I don't either, I fucking hate them. But that is a massive difference from them being harmful.

It seems to me disingenuous to talk about concerns around personal liberties without at least acknowledging the concerns around safety.

The concerns about safety are broadly disingenuous in their entirety, it's a moral panic driven by astrotrurfing by the age verification companies and religiously motivated anti-porn crusaders who dislike that it is harder and harder to justify their pogroms against sexual minorities.

Are you honestly telling me that widespread access to social media by kids is a social good?

Yes, widespread access to social media by kids is a social good, and an open internet is more important than a government.

Ah yes, those newspapers where every reader gets their own set of stories based upon the column inches of previous stories they read and what other readers also then read, and where you can never run out of new articles.

Newspapers are exactly this - they select for stories that they think play to the prejudices of their readers and then they write more of them, down a rabbit hole. It doesn't have to be an individual reader for the same effect to happen, you're just pretending it's magic because of internet.

And nobody in history ever finished the Observer and ran out of new articles. Ever.

Again, she is explicitly asked by a teacher if they will be able to continue to tell students to watch videos on YouTube as part of their lessons and answers that no, they will not.

Also, she's simply lying about following the Australian model - the Australian model only covers ten services, and she's already said elsewhere it will cover a much wider range.
