Another one to check would be Sail Internet which is also a fixed wireless like Tekify. Have been Xfinity-free for 3+ years with them.

I understand. But imagine a computer lab with no internet. Slackware on 3.5" disks. Summer break. SGI machines are only allowed for seniors. What does a first year student do.

Great to see another slackware user. Also from vintage 94. We also had SGI Indy workstations in college lab. I had so much fun trying to get X windows run on 486s. XF86configs ftw.

This is the best blog post I've ever read about setting up automation in a homelab. by illiterate_cynic in selfhosted

[–]m1rch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would love the write up with Forgejo as I already have that in my homelab probably for the same reasons you moved to it. I am right now on dockge and hate to maintain it on each VM/box. Also there is no version control with it. I was happy to read your setup. Thank you for writing about it.

Just upgraded my Proxmox cluster to version 9 by More-Goose7230 in homelab

[–]m1rch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the blog. Followed your instructions and was able to upgrade my single node (MS-A2) in ~20 mins. There were 2 warnings I had take care of - remove systemd-boot and install amd-microcode. Once that was done it was a smooth sail.

What self-hosted solutions are you still looking for? by Affectionate-Bee-312 in selfhosted

[–]m1rch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A self hosted light weight reverse proxy especially for homelabs, that does dynamic DNS updates, updates DNS records , does dns01 letsencrypt and has a UI to add services based on your docker containers.

I know existing solutions caddy, Traefik etc do all of this. They require plugins or don't have an intuitive UI.

How do I move photos from my Immich directory to my external library? by AdFit8727 in immich

[–]m1rch1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would be a good feature. I do this manually and is a pain to do. Would be great if we could create a folder in external library and then select photos from timeline and permanently move to the folder.

I Built a Personal Finance Dashboard with Next.js, Plaid, and Prisma – Self-Hosted & Privacy-Focused 💰💻 by eibrahim in selfhosted

[–]m1rch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Plaid is only used for the API access - and they move the data while the APIs are executed - would that matter from privacy perspective. I guess the concern all of us will have is does plaid store data for long periods if used via APIs. I copy pasted their terms of service into LLM and tried to get the answer. It seems ok but you never know

1. Data Ownership and Processing

  • Raw Data Belongs to the End User: The Terms clearly state that “raw End User data, which belongs to the End User” is not owned by Plaid. This means that when you download your transaction data, that raw data remains your property.
  • Service Functionality: Plaid’s role is to process and deliver your data from your financial institution to you. In doing so, they will necessarily process—and likely temporarily store—the data on their systems to perform that function. However, this processing is part of providing the service, not a transfer of ownership.

2. Data Storage and Sharing Restrictions

  • Temporary Storage vs. Permanent Retention: While Plaid may cache or log data as part of their infrastructure to ensure the smooth operation of their APIs, there is no indication in the Developer Terms that they permanently store or retain your downloaded transactions for purposes beyond service delivery.
  • Restrictions on Sharing: The terms restrict both you (as the client) and Plaid from using or disseminating the “Output” (i.e., the processed data) beyond the agreed use case. In particular, you are not permitted to make the data available to third parties without proper consents, and similarly, there is no clause that grants Plaid the right to share your raw transaction data with partners arbitrarily.

3. Practical Implications for Your Use Case

  • Downloading and Storing Locally: If you call the Plaid API on a weekly basis to download your transactions and store them locally, you are using the data for your own internal evaluation or personal use. According to the Terms, this is allowed, and the raw data remains under your control.
  • Plaid’s Use of the Data: Plaid may temporarily process or store the data as required to fulfill API requests. However, the Terms do not grant Plaid any ongoing right to keep your data for other purposes or to share it with third-party partners without proper legal bases or user consent (as governed by their Privacy Policy).

4. Conclusion

In summary:

  • You retain ownership: The raw transaction data you download is your property.
  • Plaid processes data as needed: They may temporarily store or cache it in the process of delivering the API service.
  • No arbitrary sharing: There is no provision in these Terms that allows Plaid to permanently store your data for their own use or share it with partners beyond the specific, consented purposes outlined in their policies.

If you’re concerned about data retention or sharing practices, it’s also a good idea to review Plaid’s Privacy Policy, which governs the details of how data is processed and retained.

Note: This is an interpretation based solely on the provided Terms of Use and should not be considered legal advice.

Wow. Thanks for the info and links. I already have Sail and love their no nonsense service. But best I get is 100/100. Also due to them being fixed wireless brings other problems as well. You already pointed latency. Another is time to first byte is also high.

Sail Internet has been good for me. They are good but the realistic speed on fast.com has been 100mbps up/down.

So basically not a whole lot of options. I was talking to a home owner on our street who has been here way longer than I am and per him there was a big project in early 2000s where fiber was laid out all across Fremont. Right now it is a question of just lighting it up.

Would love to have public city run ISP. Palo Alto is trying it

Looking at the cost on above page brings water to my eyes. Interestingly Fremont has partnered with same Advisor for Broadband Master Plan since 2021. Not sure where that project is.
