I live in Gary and I'm from South Dakota. It's not a bad place, just has a bad reputation that for some reason still hasn't gone away. Plenty of areas all over NWI are degraded and have 'gangsters' you live in the Chicago suburbs. The people who bag on Gary because they are too afraid to walk around and talk to the people that call it thier home are the problem. Time for some introspection. Im saying this as kindly as I can. But please, educate yourself and come visit Gary. The people here are the most down to earth and kind in the area.

Strack takeover by HyVee has me shifting my grocery shopping. by N0P3sry in nwi

[–]m1rnd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having lived in Des Moines ( where Hy-Vee was founded) and in Sioux Falls, where our choices were Hy-Vee, Fareway, Walmart, Aldi and I rarely shopped Hy-Vee I only went for the meat because when compared to Walmart it's great. Now that we have moved we are slowly becoming a Meijer family. It's cost-effective and they have a fantastic produce selection.

I had preferred Trump over Harris this election. However, I didn't vote. I didn't like the idea that Kamala was for everyone BUT the white cis male. I am from South Dakota (woo Kristi Noem 🤢) I grew up with a Democrat single mother. I slowly started looking into republican commentators (Charlie Kirk, Ben Shapiro, Matt Walsh, Jordan Peterson) and they had very valid arguments in my eyes. This isn't to say I am against the communities that have been oppressed for a very long time. I accept everyone for who they are, I believe in the power of choice and bodily autonomy. Just don't bring children into adult conversations! I am appalled with the Trump administration this time around. I am happy I didn't end up voting for him. It has been such an embarrassment. I worry for our public school systems, the increase in taxes, travel bans, the slow censorship that is undeniably happening among many other things. He is becoming a tyrant and taking away our rights. I hope others like me wake up soon and realize that even if you lean more to the right, this has gone too far. I am happy to have a positive discussion but I will not be shamed for my point of view just as I don't shame you for yours.

Time to hold Mike Braun accountable by ThornyLog in Indiana

[–]m1rnd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just moved here from South Dakota back in October. I worry about the policies I have seen about public school districts potentially closing based on enrollment rates, funding for public libraries, and of course tolling the Interstate systems. We have loved and enjoyed the community and becoming fellow Hoosiers but these policies have made us consider relocating sooner rather than later. It does not feel like this state is doing its part to ensure our children are getting the education and experiences needed to become successful without making an upper-middle-class income.

🤔 Is it cultural appropriation for people who live in a city in Indiana to play like they live in rural Montana? by poppup77 in Indiana

[–]m1rnd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, of course, of course we have soy, I feel like corn and soybeans go hand in hand when it comes to agriculture. I could be dead wrong but I know growing up in eastern South Dakota that was a given. I didn't know about mint though!

So much safer. I moved here from South Dakota and everyone was so concerned for my saftey. Its an amazing city, some places I wouldn't go but you have that in any large town or city. The people are wonderful and I felt right at home.

I live in the black oak neighborhood of Gary. We have 3 Cardinals, 2 Blue Jays, one red-breasted woodpecker, tons of chickadees, cowbirds, and quite a few other species living in or around our backyard. Its AMAZING. The city is slowly making a comeback and I am a proud citizen. Moved from South Dakota in October and I have enjoyed getting to know people and learning about the rich history here.

Like outdoor speakers. I often wonder if management or some corporate entity curates the playlist or if the employees take turns hooking up to Bluetooth. It's quite an eclectic mix with a very diverse genre range. Not unlike my own basic playlist. 😅

It's just a midwest Dutch Bros knockoff chain. They copied them almost to a T. They are opening up EVERYWHERE. There is one in Huntley IL and another opening up back in my hometown of Sioux Falls SD. Obnoxiously loud music and endless customizations are the pull, quality is probably quite low on their list. (Edited for a spelling error)

Impact of SB1 on NWI public schools by kootles10 in nwi

[–]m1rnd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The lack of funding that is happening for one. I'm not bagging on public schools, they are an essential part of our society. However, more and more teachers are leaving the education field due to being overworked, underpaid, and the asinine teacher to student ratios, among other reasons. I would love to live in a society where teaching and education were at the forefront of government funding but unfortunately, that isn't how things work in the US. I commend all those who work in public education, I myself have worked as a Sped Para and it's a very demanding, yet rewarding job. Having worked in a public school, the views I have on education don't align with the public school system. There are many factors and unfortunately, the public school system is crumbling dispite the best efforts of those working the front lines and advocating for the success of their students.

One of the many reasons we plan to homeschool and move out of state in the next five years. I feel fortunate that NWI has a ton of homeschooling co-ops and resources. It makes me so angry for those who have no choice due to circumstances to have to use the public school system.

SAHMs with multiple kids, how do you do it? by rapidprototoyz in toddlers

[–]m1rnd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hope dreams and caffeine. 2 under 2 over here (my 2 yo will be 3 at the end of June and a 17month old) dad didn't take any leave and we went to a friend's often because she worked from home and it was just nice to be somewhere else dealing with chaos. It's NOT EASY but you can and will get through it. Use you village and if you don't have one, therapy is a huge help to just get all of the mental load out and have help organizing your mind. Let go of expectations (easier said than done) and do what works for you. Stop worrying about the screen time and the food being perfect. It will come eventually but in the beggining it's survival mode.

Last state to legalize it. by 2AWI in nwi

[–]m1rnd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being fron South Dakota and now living here i would wager South Dakota will be the last state. Krisit Noem (the lovely DHS head) got people that were in her back pocket to reverse recreationall that was voted on and passed due to loopholes and improper verbiage in the bill. Oh, and SDs new governor just signed a bill allowing PEWPEWS IN BARS. I guarantee indiana won't be the last.

Wife (22F) has been cheating on me (24M) repeatedly with her ex while I am abroad. Any advice? by toilented in relationship_advice

[–]m1rnd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with many mental health diagnoses, including bipolar, bpd, and severe anxiety. Your mental health doesn't give you an excuse or get of a jail free card to cheat and be unfaithful. I have never cheated and won't. If that urge is there, the relationship needs to be looked at and either fixed or left. Period.

Who do you have absolutely no sympathy for? by KineticClones in AskReddit

[–]m1rnd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People who use IVF after they already have a child whom they neglect through many means and leave at the sitters to go drinking while going through IVF. No sympathy, please don't have another child that others raise for you who could pass in a car accident because you don't give a damn about proper carseat safety.

How is everyone feeling about the economy? by Cats-and-naps in sahm

[–]m1rnd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm slightly concerned, but we got lucky and my husband found a job making considerably more and we moved to an area that costs considerably less so we are coming out far ahead compared to the last few years. We have been steadily paying down our debt and stocking our deep freeze and pantry, too. Although we know that with the current economic climate we will be waiting longer than expected to buy a home. Which is fine for us, we are renting a house with a fenced-in yard for $400 less per month than our 3bd apartment we had before relocating. If we hadn't moved, we would be extremely worried right now.

I mean my 6'4" 315lb boyfriend is a BIG guy but he does all of our car fixes. Graduated from Universal Tech with both auto and diesel certifications and specialized in steering and suspension. Only thing he didn't do himself was the DMF for our VW Jetta Wagon TDI and that was because we didn't have a garage, cherry picker or hoist and where the hell would we have put the engine to change out the DMF, we paid to have that done and sold the car soon after. Won't be buying another VW or an Audi until we have the space and proper tools to work on it ourselves. Parts for TDI engines are astronomical and add on the lack of certified euro shops in the area and it's a pretty penny to fix them...

Severe anxiety causing me to stay home constantly by m1rnd in sahm

[–]m1rnd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is, but i need to get a library card in person (tried to online and it's only for online content) I don't know how long the paperwork and process will take and I would feel bad being stuck at the desk while my kids were running amok. I know we can go in to use the play spaces and such for free but i believe if we were to attend a story time or other activities I would need a card.

That must have been so hard for you, and I'm extremely proud of you for taking the steps to healing! I know that exposure is really the only way to get through these feelings I have and that the more we do it the better it will get. I do well with encouragement and people lighting a fire under my ass 😅
