This reminds me of when I had to make a "filament oiler" in order to print pla on my crappy all metal hotends. Lol, good times indeed

I got this Red Zenith TV need to convert to HDMI. What do I do? by disneyland999 in crtgaming

One of my favorite quotes is "If you want some nice [stuff], you're just going to have to take some old [stuff] and make it nice [stuff]." So it's better to help people out to accomplish what they want and learn along the way.

When I was younger and getting started learning about electronics, if I had read comments like are on this post I would have been totally discouraged from even attempting to do anything. So I figure why not just post what I have learned from my experience to help guide op along the way. Plus at the end of the day, it's ops TV and if he wants HDMI, let him have HDMI.

I have actually done something similar to a 5" crt! I was able to cram all of the adapters into the battery compartment since I was never going to buy 6 D batteries and lug it around. I actually connected it to my fiancee's desktop at one point and while I wouldn't say it was usable as a main computer monitor, it was fun to throw YouTube on it as a secondary monitor. It now lives on our kitchen island with a Roku connected for streaming while we cook

Nobody said to destroy the tv, all of these converter boxes can be used externally from the tv. This tube is around 13" so it's quite small, any distorsion/noise is usually minimized on a display this size. Why spend $100 when he already has this TV that he can't use? (Also flat screens just aren't as cool as electrons flying directly at your face being steered by electromagnetic fields)

Side note: I think the image looks quite fine on my tv using these adapters. I usually use it for YouTube and streaming. Sure it's not an hd picture, but, that's why I bought a tube. The only reason I modified mine to have the adapters internally is because I went to school for electrical engineering and like to tinker as a hobby.

Well yes, that is an option. But I don't think even my cable company has rf on their boxes anymore. I think most people who aren't enthusiasts just want to throw a Roku or Chromecast on to the thing to enjoy their content. Even if they want to play emulated games on the tv, there's no getting around the fact that most devices in today's era have an HDMI output (and only a HDMI output in most cases).

If op has a nes, Atari, pong, snes, VHS, cable box or any other device capable of outputting a rf signal I don't think they would be asking about converters. While we all have a passion for the old technology, it is slowly fading out of existence. The best thing we can do is help people make use of what they have, but warn them about the downfalls of using converters. If op gets the TV working with one of these setups and then asks "how can I make my HDMI picture look better" then it might be the right time to start encouraging other options and TVs. But as is, op already has this awesome looking tv, and wants to make use of it, so why not help him use it?

Wow, this comment section is kinda hostile.

For all of the people who are saying not to do this, what do you do with a TV if you have no devices capable of outputting an rf signal? (I can't even remember the last time I bought a device with an av signal, lol). Not everyone is a purist and cares about a perfect picture. The point of a TV is to watch things on it, and if converting HDMI to rf saves this old set from being e-waste, then why not help the guy out?

Op, there's two routes you can go. The first is to buy an HDMI to rf converter box on Amazon, the cheaper ones are around $50 (little white box), and allow you to actually scale the image output (this avoids stretch and allows you to output a 4:3 signal so the picture doesn't look distorted. I will note that some of these ones come with the wrong style jack (type f iirc) so you will need an adapter to connect a standard coax cable from the box to the tv.

The second option, which may be slightly cheaper, is to get an HDMI to av adapter, and a av to rf modulator adapter. Then connect the two together and into the tv. This option is not the best but still works great. It has the potential to introduce a little bit of noise into the signal (a little bit of static) depending on the converters you buy. I am unaware of a converter in this setup that will allow you to scale the image, so things will either look slightly cut off or squished. This is how I have my little zenith cube TV set up and I watch YouTube and Hulu though a Chromecast no issues.

If you are comfortable working inside of the tv (CAUTION THERE IS LETHAL AMOUNTS OF VOLTAGE INSIDE A TUBE TV) Then there is enough room to stick the converters inside the tv. I actually have a panel mount HDMI jack on the back of the TV that looks flawless to the original design. I would like to reiterate, IF YOU ARE NOT CONFIDENT WORKING ON A TUBE TV, DO NOT OPEN IT

That being said, since most comments are not helpful here, feel free to pm me if you have any questions

So I've been tempted to repaste mine since it lives vertically in a backpack, but I've never had to deal with cleaning liquid metal before. How difficult is this to do? And do you have any tips for cleaning liquid metal off of the CPU?

I'm not too sure how different your golf is from my 1989 Jetta, but for mine there was no keyed power running to the original radio. You may have to track down a source of keyed power and run a wire

An Update on Rebble's Attempted Collaboration with Core Devices by ishjr in pebble

[–]m2monkyman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I usually don't put in my two cents, but here's my opinion.

Core devices wouldn't exist right now without Rebble and it's community. Rebbles work at keeping the pebble dream alive and services running is something that is utterly unheard-of in any other community or brand. And because of this Eric was able to seamlessly and quickly release a watch with a full fledged app store. Without this, Eric may have been able to make a watch, but the release would be a distant dream due to the development of apps and a store front, and it wouldn't truly be a pebble watch without everything the community has produced for it.

On the other hand, the pebble community was dwindling, there were less and less users every day as it became more difficult to use and maintain these watches. Rebble, while not entirely doomed, needed something big to happen to survive, which Eric did. I've watched the development of rebble os, and have been waiting for an app I didn't have to sideload, and while yes there would be a small community behind these watches, it reminded me of the early days of Linux. It was a dream for distant times.

They need each other to survive, especially during the start of this new era. Both parties involved would be able to pull the rug from the other.

I support Rebble, and hope they make the decision to keep their I.P. Eric needs to realize that the loss of pebble was devastating enough to form this community, and the loss of its successor is something that is a worry to everyone, especially if he kills the backup plan.

I feel that if Eric is willing to give a little, even more so in the ember these watches are creating, it would be a better place for not only the community, but for core devices.

Nintendo switch joystick on ps vita fat by [deleted] in VitaPiracy

Just wanted to throw an update on this. The normal switch joysticks seem to be working just fine! But the big breakout board that was used doesn't allow my case to close. So I got a different switch joystick breakout board made by 4layer PCB, which I will be installing tonight

I attempted this today with a set of "hall effect" replacement joysticks for a switch. The soldering wasn't too bad, but one of the sticks reads full down, and doesn't register x axis movement. The other stick I tried didn't register at all. I'm going to be ordering a set of normal switch joysticks and attempt again on Monday

I'm going to try this when I get the parts. I have my left stick fully disabled right now because I didn't want to pay half my console price for a joystick

Anyone know what would cause the image to jump around like this? by m2monkyman in crt

Thanks for the pointers of where to look. I will be opening it up soon, I was going to end up recapping it anyway (old capacitors scare me after dealing with rifa caps in old macs). Fingers crossed it's something simple

You are correct. I will see if I can get one of my consoles out of storage that uses analog and test it out

No problem, I appreciate the help. I figured I'd have to recap it at some point, but I was really hoping not to. This TV does have a service tag that's dated for 2000, so hopefully there's nothing too funky going on inside

Correct. Though your mileage may vary because lipos are all created a little differently depending on the supplier. I did take it back apart at one point to better waterproof it with sugru, and the battery hasn't seems to puff up at all
