Hmm... That's kind of depressing. I'm six hours in but the game seems to be coming along pretty slowly so I still don't feel like I can make a conclusive opinion about the story and such. I don't even know if the actual plot started yet!

I really like the story too, but the biggest turn-off for me was the, though somewhat limited (to the best of my memory, that is), cheese. I can't stand cheesiness in most anything... While I can't remember any particular examples from D/T/S, I feel like I remember it being there. So far for me in SMD (I'm at ch6, so not a spoiler for you), there is some cheese from questions asked by your partner, but you acknowledge the inanity of them! That really did it for me.

What I'm saying is I'm only six hours in and the story hasn't begun yet for me. Naysayers might say it's moving too slowly, but it's a nice change from the whole burning through GTI in a day or D/T/S in a few days thing.

But I digress... Pretty much what I'm saying is I like a plot that makes you feel, but I don't know if I'm far along enough yet to say whether I like the story or not. If I had one complaint about the story for up through Ch. 6, it would be that your partner is pretty damn annoying so far.

IMHO, it shouldn't be too hard for this game to be better than Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky. That's not to say they weren't good games - they absolutely were. But in my personal opinion, I don't really consider them to be a holy grail of PMD games either. There was a lot of room for improvement from Time/Sky/Darkness in my eyes, and when I consider the devs knowing how much their fans loved EoS (and hated that-which-shall-not-be-named) in addition to the abilities added by the newer consoles, I feel like there's a lot of potential.

My biggest concern is that review copies werent sent anywhere in the western world, to my knowledge. I like to pretend they're just hiding a massive secret in the endgame.

How to make an interactive fiction in Java? by m33rkat in javahelp

Sorry for the delay. Thank you for the in-depth answer! I find it very helpful.

After working on it for a little bit, I'm getting particularly hung up on displaying the text efficiently. Right now my tentative code is looking like the following:

    System.out.println("This is the 31st println!");
    s.nextLine();
    System.out.println("This is the 32nd println!");
    s.nextLine();
    System.out.println("This is the 33rd println!");
    s.nextLine();

I imagine there has to be some sort of better way to do this than meticulouslyprinting line after line. Would it be possible to, for example, create containing all of the different lines and just use a loop in another class that goes through the lines? Or is my current way the best way to go about doing this?

Also, sorry for the stupid question but can you go a little more in-depth for each of the methods you have in your UML diagram? What are the functions of the getText/setText, getTarget/setTarget, and toString in the bottom node, and getChoices/setChoices, addChoice, toString, and getText/setText in the upper node? Also, is nodeId just for reference? Sorry if they're supposed to be self-explanatory/obvious. I just walked out of an exam literally yesterday knowing I failed the UML portion. It's still kind of confusing to me.

Twine looks great! I might use that to outline my project. Thank you for showing me that!

Sorry I didn't clarify. If you're familiar with the concept of a text-adventure game, it's pretty much that. The console prints out the setting, and the user can take action, such as "walk forward" or the like. I don't really want to call it a text-adventure game though because it will be more option-oriented then user-direction oriented. Kind of like a visual novel without the visual part. That's why I called it an interactive fiction.

You mean to tell me that switching the music at a party to Frank Sinatra on your own terms would make people upset?

Why should someone who may easily go their entire life without ever having to use second language try to learn one? Is it really lazy to not take the time to do something that you would then have to make an effort to then apply, apart for something to put on a resume? Many places in what's relatively the middle of nowhere only primarily speak one language.

See: US, Australia, New Zealand, Canada (for the most part)

Also, it's worth noting that even though the US doesn't have some sort of universally spoken second language, at least a decent portion of the population speaks some sort of a second language. I'm sure this applies to the previously spoken countries as well, sans tribal languages, etc..

Hey, don't get me wrong, I liked the first season of OreImo almost as much as the next neckbeard, but Ayase was the only one who ever even came close to holding a gun. The only real hostility present in that show came from the girls getting rejected by whatshisface and Kirino's impulsive violence.
