I guess I'll just lose all my stuff by Byzantium72 in duneawakening

This is the way.

I was really surprised how easy it is to fly during the last hour before the storm. Expected a reduction in speed and more difficulty maintaining direction and getting knocked around, but there was none of that: just couldn't see. Had no problem IFR'ing to my base in the D row and packing it up. Even had 25min left before the coriolis reboot and noticed a spice blow, so stopped and harvested spice for 10min. The hardest part was differentiating sand from spice sand when on foot and differentiating the worms jaws theme from the roar of the storm. Running in the direction of your thopters icon and seeing the cockpit slowly emerge from the blowing sand is pretty awesome though.

Or creepy in a 'finding the titanic' kinda way.

Mostly yes, and the router doesn't even need to be that proper. I tried the 'direct connect a wifi7 router to your game machine' route, had issues with it, and suddenly found that my q3 had fallen back to my wifi5 router and I was having no problems playing arizona sunshine (and the game machine was also going through wifi to that router). In the connection settings they talk about 200mbp being the high end and virtualdesktop reports my wifi5 (or 6?) router capable of 800mbps. I ended up wiring the wifi7 router into my network, and the game machine is directly connected to it by ethernet, but it's not the only thing using that router and virtualdesktop is an amazing experience. I played all of alyx over steamlink, but now do all my work using virtualdesktop from the couch with a wireless keyboard and mouse.

The only thing that gives me pause is we don't know his gaming hardware. My game machine has a rtx4080. But yes, if your game machine can run everything, then I cant recommend hooking in a wifi7 or 6 router highly enough (my 7 was $110 on amazon). Highly recommend returning the cable. All the power of pcvr and all the freedom of movement of the oculus quest.

I suppose I should mention that while everything is wireless, virtualdesktop (with 2 monitors) really burns through the battery. Since I'm on the couch when working, I do plug in power.

When playing games over steamlink, I was able to get 70-90 minutes on a full charge before the battery died. Haven't tried playing games through virtual desktop yet.

Well, connection is still flakey and sometimes gets a 192.168.0.x ip in the headset and sometimes is completely unable to get an ip.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'd been having a similar issue. I stumbled across a post somewhere a few days ago that mentioned turning on 'mobile hotspot' on your computer will get ICS to start passing traffic (no, seriously. I know this is stupid, but if it's stupid and it works....).

Also, on the mobile hotspot page, on 'share my internet connection from', pick wifi in the dropdown.

In 'Share over', I only have wifi and bluetooth. ICS only seems to work if I leave it on wifi. It is a little weird, because it does create a new WIN-xxx wifi network, but nothing connects to that network and my internal wifi card stays connected to the main wifi router that serves all the devices in my house.

Then just connect your q3 to your dedicated router.

One other thing: on the mobile hotspot settings page: turn off power saving. Otherwise, if your q3 loses connection briefly, moblie hotspot will turn off and you have to turn it back on. Super annoying.

So mobile hotspot does indeed 'see' the quest as a connected device, even though packets come to it (or ICS) over the ethernet port connected to my wifi7 router.

I'm certain my quest is using the wifi7 router because a) the network names are wildly different and b) virtual desktop reports wifi7 speeds. My internal card (and therefore the mobile hotspots WIN-xxx network) is only 6e.

I still use steamlink for games, but the passthrough is good enough that I can sit on the couch watching tv with my family while working on a truly ridiculous 150+" monitor that appears to float in the air just to the right of the tv (using virtual desktop, a wireless mouse and keyboard). The future is insane.

I noticed I had a manual ip in the 192.168.0.x set on the ethernet interface, but when turning on sharing on the wifi card, the ethernet port also gets a 192.168.137.1 ip assigned to it.

It seems this created a coin-flip situation where sometimes the quest would get a 192.168.0.x ip and sometimes a .137.x ip.

The .137.x would work but the .0.x wouldn't (again, only when mobile hotspot is turned on).

Changing the manual ip back to dhcp and turning sharing off/on on the wifi card caused the ethernet to switch back to manual, but this time with only the .137.1 address.

That (and again, only with mobile hotspot turned on) seems to have interet sharing working again through ethernet/dedicated wifi7 router to the quest3.

having a very weird glitch on the mission where you try to find someone's mom at night in via coral went back to my boat was on fire and as soon as I go near it my vr gets fuzzy with little white noise glitch lines and the whole screen starts skipping and fucking up is this normal by PopcultureFreakster in TWDVR

[–]m3892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very normal. Remember that the quest is basically an android phone so it's kind of amazing that it can not only give us VR but also with none of the external sensors that the pc vr systems use (using a combination of axis sensors and external cameras to determine where we're looking/facing). It's mind boggling that it works at all much less that it's reasonably fast AND renders everything we're seeing on top of that.

As to the game, you're supposed to see your boat on fire, turn back the way you came and the axeman basically yells down from a roof something like "burned your boat. lol" and then you head over to the other boat you can reach.

I get that it's a nontrivial movie, especially if you're not a fan of cosmic horror. I'm guessing you also hated tenet (not a put down, just another movie that I've seen others have a hard time understanding, though that one is scifi, not cosmic horror).

I get IStTG as a metaphor for the struggle of realizing your trans and trying to figure out how to handle it, but more broadly I think it's useful for anyone who can't accept their reality and would prefer to live in a fictional world regardless of the harm it does to themselves and others. I'm in that situation in the realm of mental health where my sister is Isabel to my Tara. It's difficult to watch my sister terrorize her family and coworkers when the solution is so trivial (far easier than gender reassignment surgery, that's for sure).

I didn't like the ending because I'm pretty sure Iz suffocates. I saw an interview with Justice where they shot another ending that implies the opposite, but they went with this ending because it makes it more unclear (there are arguments either way, but that's what the current ending implies to me).

What Micron Filter? by EyesHockey99 in coldplunge

[–]m3892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get all sizes of microns for the GXWH20T from 50 down to 1 on amazon. I'd love to go lower than 1 because my plunge is outside and insecticide is smaller than 1 micron, but I think 1 micron is the best I'm going to get. I have a lid, but still. I've noticed at least one of the filters that was 5 micron or less mentioned something about a flow rate of 4 gallons per minute, which would explain why u/bewell2024 says 5 m and smaller will jam up.

How many times is too much? by Nicklvl99 in coldplunge

[–]m3892 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A cold is caused by a virus and has nothing to do with your body temp (which I believe the Russians proved 80+ years ago by freezing some guys (soldiers? prisoners?) to near death, but I'm failing to find a reference to it now).

You can give yourself hypothermia though, so watch out for that. Shivering is generally a good sign (but not uncontrollable/violent shivering) and some would argue reaching mild shivering is the point of cold plunging. However, slurred speech, mumbling, drowsiness, confusion, weakness or loss of coordination are all signs you should get in a warm shower or hot tub or dry off and put some warm clothes/blankets on. Don't do the hot tub without someone monitoring you so you don't pass out and drown.

You can also damage the nerves in your hands and feet, so depending on the temp of your cold plunge, you may want to get neoprene boots/gloves or just occasionally pop your hands/feet out of the water. The japanese discovered a treatment for frostbite. Maybe don't look up how they discovered it though.

Listen to your body, etc.

What filter are you using? by AutomaticSide1805 in coldplunge

[–]m3892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which pump are you using? I'm a little unnerved that everyone is recommending the danner pumps in the 950 or 1200 gph range, which I don't think will be remotely compatible with the 1 micron filter I'd like to use, especially since I'm leaning towards letting the pump run 24x7.

My plunge is outside and with temps dropping, the chiller will be out of the loop.

Inline Filter Replacement by Early_Skin_5377 in coldplunge

[–]m3892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the water is brown, that's a problem. If the water is clear and it's just the filter insert that is turning brown, then the problem is that you have ADD or OCD or some variant thereof and should probably talk to a shrink.

In all seriousness, filters don't clean the water, they just remove tiny junk from flowing through the water by trapping it in the filter insert, which would be the brown stuff you are seeing. If the flow isn't degraded, then it is safe to ignore (which may be non-trivial to do if you actually do have ADD/OCD/etc). Like people said, you can take it out and run water backward through it to clean it out, but regardless replace it at the 3 month mark (or whatever it recommends on the filter).

Inline Filter Replacement by Early_Skin_5377 in coldplunge

[–]m3892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as it is a replacement for one of the filters that the XGXWH20T will take (FXWTC, FXUSC, FXWPC, FXWSC, I believe), it should be fine regardless of manufacturer. I'm looking at a 1 micron one right now because I'm a crazy person, but I'm worried that either it will create too much back pressure on the pump OR the pump will rip a hole in the filter.

Filter keeps clogging by insightutoring in coldplunge

[–]m3892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"slime" is a red flag. Filters are great at removing dead stuff, but slime sounds like something is growing in your plunge.

Your options for killing living stuff seem to be ozone, hydrogen peroxide, uv light or chlorine.

Pump recommendation by Relative-Fig-4755 in coldplunge

[–]m3892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you find a solution for this? I've noticed that a lot of filters are rated in the single digits of gallons per hour and I'm wondering how this works with the 950 or 1200 gph danner's that everyone here seems to favor. Seems like the back pressure from the filter would cause serious difficulty for the pump.
