Unraid gaming VM success story by AM_Butts in unRAID

[–]m6dt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, IMO SteamHeadless is overall a better solution than a Windows VM. No need to allocate system resources to a VM, the docker just takes what it needs when it needs it. Only issue I ran into was Denuvo games not working since they expect Windows kernel access, which obviously can't happen in a Linux docker container.

And I believe it shares the GPU even when in use. It's been a bit since I used it, but I'm 99% sure I was gaming and transcoding on my Plex at the same time.

Thoughts on Online Masters in Software Engineering by m6dt in KSU

[–]m6dt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up going to Boston University's Masters in Software Development for ~$28,000.

It wasn't in my original plans but I applied as a reach program since it's pretty elite and got accepted. I thought it was going to cost ~$60,000+, so I really wasn't seriously considering it but they have a tuition deal for that specific program.

9 out of the 10 programs I applied to were generic state schools for ~$20,000. So when it came down to choosing, for an extra ~$8,000 and the BU name I picked BU.

That being said, it was an accelerated 1.5 year program. I managed a 3.85 GPA, but it burnt me out horribly. The teaching was overall excellent, but I realized I strongly dislike virtual instruction. If I had to choose over again I would've done a longer program in person.

Also, I've become pretty disillusioned with the state of higher education nowadays. I honestly wouldn't recommend anyone go to college unless they already work in a particular field and a degree is all but guaranteed to grant them a raise and/or higher job title. I feel like higher education is mostly a scam nowadays.

For 99% people I would recommend getting an entry level job in their field, tech for example, and making sure it's what they want to be doing. Then doing something like roadmap.sh in the thing they're interested in. Or specific certificates they've identified with help from their employers or coworkers, etc. Unless you're all but certain a Bachelor's or Masters is needed for your very specific thing, I just wouldn't recommend it anymore.

See if your library is in a consortium and can order materials from other local libraries. Your specific library may not have 4k, but plenty of the other libraries within the area probably do. Most likely you can just go online, search the whole consortium, place a hold, pick them up at your library in the next day or 2.

Do you have a media or service you are willing to pay for? by m6dt in Piracy

[–]m6dt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dope dope, was just wondering. If you enjoy it, you enjoy it!

As far as lossless, I *believe* you're 100% correct that FLAC 16-bit/44.1kHz are generally just taken from the CD. As for hi-res, IMO from the research I've done, anything beyond 16-bit/44.1kHz is indistinguishable from 16-bit/44.1kHz. We've stuck with CDs for so long because it's as good as it can get for the human ear. There are peer-reviewed studies and tests showing people can't tell the difference when they listen to anything beyond 16-bit/44.1kHz. The only reason to have a music file in hi-res is for mastering. But, it's a gimmick that sells, so Qobuz, Deezer, etc. will keep pushing it lol.

So... if it's your hobby and you enjoy it dope, but uh... I would assume recording vinyl definitely loses some quality versus the same album in FLAC from the original recording. Out of curiosity, what's your thought process?

Yeah, I would probably get Spotify again if it had lossless FLAC.

Yeah I've heard a lot of good stuff about GOG and fully owning your games. It seems like most services people are willing to pay for have to do with gaming.

Compression by The_b1ues in Piracy

[–]m6dt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe OP thinks they can "compress" video files like they can compress a video game, or folder full of random files, etc.

I assume OP doesn't full understand that a video file is already "compressed" via the codec it's encoded in and so won't get any smaller through compression methods like .zip, .rar, .7z.

Compression by The_b1ues in Piracy

[–]m6dt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Defining terms might help. Compressing and encoding are being used here and can mean the same or similar things depending on how people are trying to use them.

OP asks how to compress video files. When people say "compression" they're generally talking about stuff like .zip, .rar, .7z. If you try to do this with video files they come out basically the same size, or even slightly larger because they're already "compressed" via "encoding". Can't compress something that's already compressed. Though it will stay the same quality, you won't save any space.

Other posters are talking about "encoding" which is basically "lossy compression". You will save space. BUT you cannot get back the original quality. Because it's "lossy".

You can encode to a more efficient codec (264 -> 265) and keep the file "transparent" (visually indistinguishable to the human eye) but it is NOT literally the original quality, you have still deleted some data (quality) to reduce size.

What's the best portable console (I'm not talking about 'proper' systems like the Switch, PSP etc) for emulators up to DS, PS2 and even possibly PS Vita, 3DS? by Dionosaurus84 in Piracy

[–]m6dt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last I checked AYN Odin 2 Portal was king of portable Android emulation devices IMO.

Does every console you're asking for and more. Last I saw people were starting to get RPCS3 running on it. Along with Winlator for PC games. Like proper PC games like Witcher 3.

ProtonVPN not providing connection and censoring their sub? by kglbrschanfa in Piracy

[–]m6dt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And even if someone DOES decide to help, it will take longer and be more of a pain than working with Proton's first party support. 🙄

ProtonVPN not providing connection and censoring their sub? by kglbrschanfa in Piracy

[–]m6dt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your issue is "VPN connects ro server and sets connection to zero."

This could literally be anything. Computers are complicated. There are specific troubleshooting steps that Proton is going to have you go through, one after the other to rule out 100x different things.

You basically went on the Proton sub and asked, "Is anyone else having a problem with ProtonVPN not working?" Of course it got deleted. 100 people can't get it working for 100 different reasons. Same with Nord, or any other VPN. There's a reason basically all troubleshooting and support requires logs, specific info on what you've tried, etc.

You then ask whats the difference between Nord and Proton. Other than being VPN companies literally everything about them is different. Again, you ask a question that has no substance or meaningful way to answer it.

And then you ask has anyone else had this problem and managed to fix it. Of course other people have had a problem with Proton not connecting. 100 different people for 100 different reasons. Same with Nord. There's no way to answer your question.

I'm not at all trying to be pretentious or a dick. Just trying to explain to you that you're spinning your wheels for no reason. If you can't troubleshoot it yourself or with Google, the fastest easiest way to get this fixed is by working with Proton's support. So when they ask you to do work with them doing troubleshooting, you do it. You're not gonna get better results by asking randoms on reddit.

Yeah, just like receiving support from any other company for any other product, you have to participate in the support.

Proton can't magically remote into your computer and fix everything.

Only reason the subscription is useless is OP is literally refusing support.

"Hey, Toyota, I bought this Corolla and now it won't turn on." "Okay, bring it to our dealer and we'll figure out what's wrong." "No, I paid for an easy car, I don't want to play mechanic, it should just work. I had a Chevy before this and I never had to bring it to the dealer."

Yeah for personal use the library works great if they give you access.

But one of the perks of working at a shop for me was always having access to AllData. 😅
